In the 70s & 80s Ruby and others, especially Jah Shaka used to use a syntheziser drum called a "Synare" It was an electronic drum pad with knobs on the side that made electronic effect when you play with sticks or your hands. You can still find them used from time to time. In this video it looks like he is using a custom box probably built by one himself or one of the studio engineers. It was just an oscillator with an LFO to make the sound "squiggly"
Big up Bobby Culture, Fat Jaw selector pon Jack Ruby Sound system! Had nuff cassete tapes of Jack Ruby in the 80's. True what the hell happened to Bobby Culture? He was one of my best DJ's in the 80's he just disapeared from the muzik scene! Blessed for the post!
Yes, most Reggae is 'borrowed' from other successful artists. Hardly anything is actually 'original' It is mostly a nod to older 'Roots' music. Its a respect thing, not a theif thing :) This same style of making music is EXACTLY what hip hop does today. taking hits from the past, and making them 'new' again :)
dj bizness is different. Write your own lyrics and dj your own lyrics. This is not a singing thing, this is a urban/street thing. Thats y dem invent the word Pirate. When u have artistes from the same era and 1 dj chat a next man style/lyrics and then go on to record it thats Piracy. Jose hit with Kingston Hot and is Brigy lyrics. I agree that nothing is 100% original but still there is a line that has to be drawn. Art form is gone its all about $ and commercialism now.
I'm a musician, so I always think in terms of the 'background music'. Plus over here in New York, DJ means the guy playing the music, not delivering the lyrics :D Respect.
