white german shepherds are white because of mutated genes. the american kennel club does not recognize them. they only allow the slightest bit of white on the chest. and even that is frowned upon. they are in everysense of the word "real german shepherds" . just not registerable by the akc. there are other registries where color does not matter and white is accepted or prefered. just a matter of choice for the owner. they are all great dogs.

There was one big anachronism in that show: The dog itself. This show was set in the 1870's-1880's or thereabouts and German Shepherds didn't show up in America until after World War 1.
