This is why I never believe people with disabilities are dumb or don't understand the world. my twinboys don't talk (they're much younger). but you can see and feel they think so much! It wouldn't suprise me too much if they actually don't talk because they understand everything allready. humans are the most incredible creatures we just began knowing.

I wonder since she is older if she took the same medication people with seizures take if that would help with the over stimulation. Not take so much that she's a zombie but give her some relief. Must be super painful living in that body.

I have come across people like this and they really piss me off!!
@9807ANDREW I do help, but when people come over they shoulder me out of the way. My sis and i communicate on a way that no one else does, and i love her from the bottom of my heart, but i hate being the one in the background.
I'm grateful to her for helping me understanding my nephew. I sincerely hope she will change the cientists' ideas about autism. Long life and happiness for her and all her family.

I have nothing against autistic people, let me say that now. My little sis is autistic, and whenever people come over, they flock to her and try to help. I mean, i understand being compassionate, but i hate being ignored. It's like, I'm not even there when she's around.
@firstplace15 well maybe you should just be thankful that you dont need the help she does and maybe if you joined in you wouldnt feel so left out and you may even get recognition as being a wonderful sister!
What a Fantastic Journey ! Thank you SOO much Carly for sharing your thoughts and feelings! It is Very encouraging ! I know, as an adult that understands my son's problems that you are Very right about the input of sensations being too much to bear. Ty for sharing yourself with the world !
I just watched this and my 13 year old son (severely autistic) just typed his name into the computer after I told him i wouldn't give him the Apple Jacks Cereal unless he did. He screamed a little, then saw I was resolute and did it. I give in and give him everything, Never again will I give in. I also have a 10 year old daughter who is similarly afflicted. This has given me hope.
By the way neither of my children has ever typed anything until now. God Bless you for this video.
My son is 4 and Autistic. I feel so happy for this family. I can't afford the therapy my son needs and it breaks my heart. He still amazes me every day, and I know he will do great things with his life.
@akahoshisenjo Not sure where you are but if you are in the US, contact your local Regional Center. They will pay for his therapy. My 3 yr. old autistic daughter is currently enrolled in preschool (which the school district covers 100%) and also gets 10 hours of ABA therapy each week (which the Regional Center pays for 100%). There are great, free services available to all autistic children, no matter your income. You just have to know where to look for them. Best of luck!
@pittersmama He did finally get into Head Start after much fighting, and he only get about 30 mins of services. We live in a very rural area and don't have much to work with. Our OT comes from 2 hours away once a month to work with the kids. We have no sensory intergration therapist. Our nearest Wal-Mart is an hour and a half away if thet give you any idea of how far away from things we are. I am hoping we can afford to move to a bigger area to get him the help he needs. Thanks though!
@akahoshisenjo I am lucky to live near San Diego where there is a abundance of services. (There are 3 Walmarts w/in a 5 miles radius of me.) Before my daughter turned three, she was in the Early Start program. The Regional Center paid for 12 hours of in-home ABA, and an hour of each of these (Speech, OT and PT) every week. It think it was around $6,000/month. I've never had to pay for anything, thank God. My daughter is fairly mild. Some kids get 40 hours/week of ABA.
@akahoshisenjo I just ordered one of these free kits and they are very helpful. Lots of useful info. From AutismSpeaks Facebook."Families whose children have been diagnosed in the last 6 months may request a complimentary hard copy of the 100 Day Kit or the AS/HFA Tool Kit by calling 888-AUTISM2 (888-288-4762) and speaking with an Autism Response Team Coordinator." I would call them and tell them there aren't many services at your disposal. Maybe they can help! Worth a phone call.
@pittersmama I have one of the 100 day kits and I am a chapter rep for the Autism Society in my state and they are very aware of our lack of services. LOL I may try calling them since they are seperate from ASA. Thanks! I have a family member who has a daughter and lives int h San Diego area and I'm super jealous of all the services! Haiden is higher functioning though. I am very blessed that way.
@akahoshisenjo Here I am preaching to the choir! LOL! It seems like you have all your ducks in a row. I just wish there were more services available in your area. I get nervous whenever my husband talks about transferring with his job. I was afraid that different places would offer less services, and you just confirmed that. I think we need to stay put until she is older. These services are so important. I am blessed, too, that my girl is higher functioning. Best of luck!
I'd like to actually witness her typing in that written voice in the video. The little they show of her communication with her father is nothing like the text being read as her "voice." Till then, I'm skeptical that this is just another form/example of assisted typing/facilitated communication, which has been proven to be influenced by the facilitators involved.
I am a tutor from Farmington Hills Michigan and I work with children with special needs including children with Autism. I am so inspired by Carly's progress and awed by her ability to describe her life in such detail. I wish I could e-mail her and her parents to let them know what an inspiration they are for me in my work. I would also want to ask them if carly was on a gluten, soy, and dairy free diet or if she had ever tried that approach as well?
@steve1946hue I too am very curious what kind of diet Carly is on. Getting a sufficient amount of nutrients can do wonders for the body. Getting rid of all the dairy, gluten, soy, chemicals and limiting the processed sugars would be ideal for sure. I think she needs to detox all the chemicals in her body with a raw vegan diet....I would love to see her after that!
i believe that those 113 people that dilike this have something wrong with them or a bad heart beacue they dont see that this girl could help scientists find cures for people like this. and i bet that those people know at least one person like this that this night help!
I believe every disabled person has some sort of intelligence. But maybe we 'normal' people don't know how to see or connect to this intelligence. I had this idea since my childhood.
Really beautiful to see this kid grows since she is able to communicate.
It must be a very hard time for her, living for years in a disabled body, having intelligence, but not knowing how to communicate. I have Aspergers, and also other people sometimes think I'm dumb because I'm slow. It makes me very sad.
@AspergerADD Yeah. It's just like, kind of blocked or hidden. But there are ways to make it so much easier for them to express, or unblock, it. Like by developing the areas in the brain that need it through targeted input, using the Neurological Approach or other methods. I have seen remarkable positive changes in people using the ND Approach with autism, asperger's, cerebral palsy, ADD, etc. My friend with cerebral palsy walks and talks, two things his doctor said would never happen.
Fudgetards, autistic children are people who think and do things in a different way, sometimes those things seem strange or completely weird. My sister is autistic, she is severely or whatever my retarded parents say. I don't see why everyone is so big on autism, there's even a frakking month for it. I'm tired of people saying after I tell them my sister's autistic "Oh no!" or "Hmph, that explains everything..." Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest.
thats amazing how she express herself through typing on the computer.. not all autistic can do that! therefore she should be honored for bringing voice of all other autistic people
Wow. It really makes me sad to think of all the autistic and otherwise disabled people with a high functioning brain who lived before Carly and didn't have a means to communicate their thoughts, and who lacked people that have the patience and understanding that Carly's parents have. This is truly and inspiring story. But to think of all the people like Carly that were carelessly thrown into asylums to live out their lives in agony...
Dear Carly, you are very inspirational,my brother has autism and he hasn't even said his first word yet and he's 6,I would love to meet you one day and read your novel
so am i to assume this is a one off or do many autistic peeps like this suffer the same fate? ive worked with a few 'non-functionables' whilst at school having to bounce them up and down on a trampoline. couldn't help laughing myself, didn't seem like there was anything AT ALL going on inside their heads. they couldn't even walk. but my sense of humour is fucked, so i guess that was a bad thing to do. give em a computer and if they write 'fuck you', ill take it all back!
Really, this is unimaginable? Having worked with kids with developmental difficulties, I found this amazing, but not beyond the bounds of imagination.
We are learning more and more that people with autism conditions, Down syndrome, etc. are NOT "stupid"--that they have every bit as much going on in their minds as "the rest of us." What they need are viable ways to express themselves so others will understand, as this story so powerfully shows.
so its settled? put the child infront of a computer as soon as they can learn to type and have communication :D this was really inspiring and really makes me thankful for the simple pleasures i have
Carly. I hope everyone in the world could see this video. You and your family give hope to many people around the world including fathers like myself who are trying to do a better job loving our children. I will also show all my students your video.
This is a beautiful inspiring story. I too have autism, but I'm still able too function normally. Nonetheless this is an inspiration to people everywhere with autism.
Dear Carly, You have a beautiful loving family that never gave up, thank you for having curage in communcating with typing your needs, desires & etc. Now my window is a little more open to find a way to help my 9yr old grandson by sign language, typing, pointing, & etc. My grandson does not talk, but sometimes he sings in a high pitch voice like "up up up" & "bye bye bye".Do you think therpy in singing one word at a time would help my grandson and others to talk? Love to you and your family.
having a son with Autism myself it made me think just like always anything is possible. I am so happy for you all to find away to talk to each other and I have to say I waited seven years to hear the word mommy. I to could never give my child up and see all the blessing I have to have him. Thank you for sharing this.
To Carly's parents, If I could find a word for each tear I am shedding I would be writing you guys a book! Growing up with a mentally handicapped sister changed my life in so many wonderful ways. My father was my sister's champion (and mine) and it makes me feel so good to know that you are wonderful and loving parents who make you family complete! Watching your video tonight has filled my heart with such hope! Much love to your whole family. Carly, you are a legend :)
Wow. Keep shouting and whispering and and singing and writing poetry, Carly!
What loving parents you have. What a charming, smart, fierce young woman you are. I suspect your twin sister is pretty cool, too. Sometimes, the digital world seems to diminish us as human beings. But the wonderful, powerful reality presented in this video would not exist without the technology that permits you, Carly, to speak to your family, and now to the world.
@sefwhat. Let us just stop bickering back and forth because we are truly missing the point. Fake video or not it is truly inspiring and gives hope. I just don't understand why someone would fake being mentally disabled. That's all. I'm done. If you think it's fake then fine. Go ask 20/20 why they did a fake miracle special. I dunno what you want us to tell you. Do you want me and other countless other people to just sit here and say... "oh yea sefwhat you are soooooo right!" I am sure you h
@cheesoslimo Not once did I say the girl's autism is fake. I said the typings are fake. And I don't think you understand what I'm doing here. I just want to raise awareness because I don't like misconceptions being spread about a medical condition. Furthermore, a condition which tells the story of my life. How would you feel if you have cancer and someone goes around saying that cancer is good? Pretty hopeful, huh?
Seems that you like ignorance over awareness. I leave you to it then.
@sefwhat thanks sefwhat. this is carly's dad. i appreciate your support as carly feels bullied by people like cheesoslimo. she types in front of world renowned doctors (once an autism conference in LA in front of neuroscientists) and daily in school. cameras make her panicky due to her OCD, but no shortage of professionals, friends and family have seen her type independent thoughts, independently with no facilitation. cant seem to stop the trolls and disbelievers though. so hurtful!
@sefwhat I appriciate that you are trying to raise awarness, but to say that this brilliant, young girl's ability to type is fake, there is no need for that. No one here has said autism is a good thing, it's not, but from what I have witnessed in this video is that Carly has a dream and she has found a way to get there, and she will work towards it, never giving up! Just like her incredible parents.
@sefwhat To Carly's dad, I just want to say I am so grateful to see that there is a father who cares so much for his child out there. I am so overcome with joy, because you are the ideal father that every child should have, one who is willing to give up so much for their child. I can't wait until the book comes out, I will gladly read it! Lastly I want to say, Carly, you can make a difference in the world and you hae chosen to do so. Thankyou! =)
thank you Carly. You made me cry so much as i am sure that Lydia my best friend`s daughter islike you and have so much to teach us and it is a real brake through as she is craving to be normal . I love You and your family and shall certainly read your books Love Kittyxxx
@sefwhat Please look up autistic savant if you think that autism is limited to your standards of the disease. .... Let us know what your definition of autism is then!
@cheesoslimo I'm getting tired of you people who can't take a bit of effort to actually understand what autism is before trying to say I'm wrong. I have absolutely no problem with autistic savants. And I am sure that any autistic savant, autistic or normal person would not know how to write before saying his first word.
@bananadine. I couldn't have said it better myself. Every autistic person is different. Perhaps this person ranting about how it is fake is just unfortunately stressed comparison to their own experience. I would be grateful for something like this if I had an autistic family member. This would give me hope in knowing that there is a way for communication and improvement. If anyone here thinks it's fake go write a letter to 20/20... Case closed.
@johnnnyboyz100 yes...in front of a production crew, lights and cameras in her face. carly has a major anxiety disorder, she's a young person and finds public writing as intimidating as you might find public speaking on a camera for a major broadcast network news show. but though she types slowly, she types and has numerous independent and credible witnesses (ie her doctors, teachers and therapists).

I have nothing against autistic people, let me say that now. My little sis is autistic, and whenever people come over, they flock to her and try to help. I mean, i understand being compassionate, but i hate being ignored. It's like, I'm not even there when she's around.

He still amazes me every day, and I know he will do great things with his life.
akahoshisenjo 3 weeks ago
@akahoshisenjo Not sure where you are but if you are in the US, contact your local Regional Center. They will pay for his therapy. My 3 yr. old autistic daughter is currently enrolled in preschool (which the school district covers 100%) and also gets 10 hours of ABA therapy each week (which the Regional Center pays for 100%). There are great, free services available to all autistic children, no matter your income. You just have to know where to look for them. Best of luck!
pittersmama 3 weeks ago
@pittersmama He did finally get into Head Start after much fighting, and he only get about 30 mins of services. We live in a very rural area and don't have much to work with. Our OT comes from 2 hours away once a month to work with the kids. We have no sensory intergration therapist. Our nearest Wal-Mart is an hour and a half away if thet give you any idea of how far away from things we are. I am hoping we can afford to move to a bigger area to get him the help he needs. Thanks though!
akahoshisenjo 3 weeks ago

Worth a phone call.
pittersmama 3 weeks ago
@pittersmama I have one of the 100 day kits and I am a chapter rep for the Autism Society in my state and they are very aware of our lack of services. LOL I may try calling them since they are seperate from ASA. Thanks! I have a family member who has a daughter and lives int h San Diego area and I'm super jealous of all the services! Haiden is higher functioning though. I am very blessed that way.
akahoshisenjo 3 weeks ago

I would also want to ask them if carly was on a gluten, soy, and dairy free diet or if she had ever tried that approach as well?
steve1946hue 3 weeks ago
@steve1946hue I too am very curious what kind of diet Carly is on. Getting a sufficient amount of nutrients can do wonders for the body. Getting rid of all the dairy, gluten, soy, chemicals and limiting the processed sugars would be ideal for sure. I think she needs to detox all the chemicals in her body with a raw vegan diet....I would love to see her after that!

AspergerADD 3 weeks ago 3

We are learning more and more that people with autism conditions, Down syndrome, etc. are NOT "stupid"--that they have every bit as much going on in their minds as "the rest of us." What they need are viable ways to express themselves so others will understand, as this story so powerfully shows.

cheesoslimo 1 month ago
@cheesoslimo Not once did I say the girl's autism is fake. I said the typings are fake. And I don't think you understand what I'm doing here. I just want to raise awareness because I don't like misconceptions being spread about a medical condition. Furthermore, a condition which tells the story of my life. How would you feel if you have cancer and someone goes around saying that cancer is good? Pretty hopeful, huh?
Seems that you like ignorance over awareness. I leave you to it then.
sefwhat 1 month ago
@sefwhat thanks sefwhat. this is carly's dad. i appreciate your support as carly feels bullied by people like cheesoslimo. she types in front of world renowned doctors (once an autism conference in LA in front of neuroscientists) and daily in school. cameras make her panicky due to her OCD, but no shortage of professionals, friends and family have seen her type independent thoughts, independently with no facilitation. cant seem to stop the trolls and disbelievers though. so hurtful!
torontoadguy1 1 month ago
@sefwhat I appriciate that you are trying to raise awarness, but to say that this brilliant, young girl's ability to type is fake, there is no need for that. No one here has said autism is a good thing, it's not, but from what I have witnessed in this video is that Carly has a dream and she has found a way to get there, and she will work towards it, never giving up! Just like her incredible parents.
