nicolai gedda ha una voce la più possente che esiste,non solo la più simpatica all'orecchio che genera un patema d'animo meraviglioso e naturale come fossi tu a cantare davanti alla platea della vita canora umana. franco 1940
I have to say that this thing with comparing one tenor to another is rubish...we should be examining each singer on their own seperate from the rest..each of these great singers brings their own flare emotion and voice to what they sing and making one more or less by comparing is missing the point od interpretation...we all have our fav's

please dont put mr gedda in the same league as corelli. the difference really is like chalk an cheese . although mr gedda has a pleasant voice he cannot seriously be compared to the greatest tenor who ever lived namely franco corelli. or maybe its just my opinion?
@Herur22 ok we will beg to differ on this subject. because after all we are both lucky to have two such fine singers to listen to. i find the tenor voice so mesmerising and powerful. it takes you on every emotion. just fantastic. thank you for this coming together of opinions on this subject
@ForAll23 seriously if corelli had such a big ego why was it that he suffered so much with nerves before every performance? surely people with big egos are very confident in anything they do. it kind of defeats your argument really doesnt it?
@gerry4339 Gedda must surely be regarded as a greater artist than Corelli. Corelli had an incredibly masculine and powerful voice that was fantastic for Italian roles. However, from an artistic perspective, Gedda left a legacy of hundreds of (many of them reference!) recordings in various languages in which he demonstrated incredible musicality, elegance and finesse as well as superb diction and characterization of his roles. On top of that, he had a huge repertoire of art songs.
@Pollione88 Word of wisdom! Gedda is a singing artist. IMO, merely belonging to different fachs does not mean that two singers cannot be compared with one another from an artistic/stylistic point of view. A tenor can possess a dark, heroic voice and still sing with finesse, just as he may have a sweet lyric voice and just bore everyone to death with his self-indulgent monotonous singing! I won't mention names!
I don't think its worth comparing, they did different things well. Gedda was one of the greatest Mozart singers ever, which Corelli did not do. And COrelli was a great Italian Spinto, which Gedda was not ever. I would say that the comparison is between Brie and Cheddar, both delicious both Cheese and both different. And you can like one or the other as your taste judges. I think what you are rather saying is that it is more impressive to be the greatest spinto than greatest light-lyric
It's surprising that some people do not give 5 stars for this kind of performance by N. Gedda (there are other ones of this kind). How to give less than 5 stars ?! I don't understand !
Magnificent rendition - here with his French hat on. Magnificent in whatever language he chose. Wait a minute.. I can't remember him claiming to know much Spanish. But I see that Herur22 can discuss quite nicely in that language, as well as several others. Bravo to you both!
This is all about a guy trying to get a woman he's obsessed with out of his mind. Gedda completely gets this. It's a magnificent performance of one of the great French arias.
The late Beverly Sills said (in one of her memoirs) that "I know I will never have sung MANON with a better tenor than Nicolai Gedda. And that's no mean compliment."
So do I: Massenet's MANON may be thought of as a soprano's opera -- but I really think it belongs to the tenor. Des Grieux has a number of moments where he can steal the show.
Gedda is magnificent. The only other tenors whom I've heard sing this great aria so well are Thill, Bjorling and Tucker -- also maybe Schipa in Italian ("Ah dispar, vision")---
Gedda is always awsome, it was certainly one of the best ! In this aria, everything is perfect, it's been a long time I didn't hear such an amazing thing ! Even if it's a studio recording ! Bravo !!!

Gedda's French was flawless, and his voice perfect for French opera.
In my opinion, no one sang the role of Desgrieux better than he did.

@gerry4339
Franco Corelli loved, just like Mario del Monaco, to show off his voice.
They were totally in love with their own voices. They saw and heard no one else on the stage, only themselves and their own egos.

@gerry4339
1. Pretending to be nervous can be a way to draw attention to oneself. Further; if he then performs the task unexpectedly, his luck is made.
2. There are many different types of ego-"people".
> Defeats your argument really doesn't it?
3. Guess... :-)

@ForAll23 he was the greatest tenor who ever lived so if he had an ego so be it he had a right to have the biggest ego of all

@gerry4339 Hello again!
When we like/love someone it is actually not so debatable.
However it can anyway be a bit interesting to share and discuss what we feel.
Franco Corelli was undoubtedly a great tenor of our time.
