timjmuller i did not experience this. i only could not remove the old bearing innermost piece off the shaft, so instead i slid it DOWN the shaft past the groove for the mini c-collar. I used a chisel and sledgehammer to move it that half inch to make room for the new bearing. Impeller cant be loose, maybe it is damaged as well. I filled the soace between the spring loaded gasket and the new bearing with waterproof grease. Adam
Fixed mine with the abovementioned $9 skateboard bearing and 2 hours. Ours had become loud after 3.5 years use. Ordered that part a few weeks ago. Dishwasher just filled up and emptied as of tonight, no pumping or spinning. So i opened it up and replaced the bearing. It now sounds like it is running "like new". Thank you, yourose98 and wrightventidos!
@utopiaHammerstone I just put on a new bearing and replaced the motor shaft seal. It seems like the motor shaft with impeller has quite a bit of resistance or friction. Did you run into this? It seems like its friction at the seal. Maybe i tightened the impeller too much. I haven't put the unit back on yet because I fear something is just not right. In help would be appreciated.
Perhaps unintentionally, a wonderfully hilarious video....the dryly despondent commentary of our hero as he fumbles with the plastic shoddy parts is priceless.
Very good video. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Now I have a pretty good idea why my Kitchen Aid Dishwasher has started making noise after 8 years. I took the chopper and washing assembly out and ran the dish washer without them but the noise is still there so pretty sure it is the motor pump assembly which cost $224.17 canadian to replace.
There is a new seal part number supeceeding the 8561017 costs about $70 shipped from Whirpool. The seal and stainless washer in the new part # seems to be higher quality than the defective one. I bought Rollerblades bearings Koyo made all from stainless steel, that will help to bearing's life in case the seal leaks again.
Next dishwasher will be a Bosch unit, my mother in law owns one for 10 years to date without any problem, she paid $200 more than I paid for the crappy chinese Whirpool...

We also have a Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash which began grinding some weeks ago, about 4.5 years after installation. Many thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction in locating the problem. With a helpful online procedure posted by RepairClinic, I was able to replace my motor and save a huge repair bill.
It's all made from whirlpool ,whirlpool mfgs kitchenaid ,maytag, amana, kenmore, estate, whirlpool actually makes about the five year old compactors....tech, 7+
Such a huge disappointment for Kenmore- Sears should be ashamed. They have always had a good reputation for producing quality appliances, which they wasted here. We have an Ultra Wash Quiet Guard Deluxe which has just begun to make a loud grinding noise...it's about 18 months old as well.
@MDCeasar , My Whirlpool "Gold" dishwasher (pfffft, more like Whirlpool Lead) had the same problem. Never, ever again, will I buy another Whirlpool dishwasher or clothes washer. We now have a Bosch dishwasher that we are very happy with.
wow, that dishwasher was really bad and I thought mine was bad considering that mine is over 6 years and it started failing me last year...same brand by the was a black Kenmore Elite, quiet guard.
The disassembly tips were helpful. The bad attitude was annoying (throwing stuff around, flinging screws & parts, handling sealing surfaces roughly.. you comment on poor workmanship & then display bad habits yourself. Hmm, perhaps you're the next Kenmore assembly worker.
Bad attitude? Considering he probably spent almost a thousand on a disposable piece of garbage I fully understand why he is annoyed. I am in the same boat and I can't help but think how calm and controlled he was through the whole video. Yeah, a little shot at the end - no fucking doubt.
Thanks for the video yourose98. It was the exact same problem that my dishwasher had. I watched the video several times while I was taking it apart and putting it back together. So, that was nice. And thanks to wrightventidos for the seal kit and bearing part numbers. I picked up the seal kit from Appliance Zone for $22 shipped and I picked up one bearing from my local Fastenal for less than $2.
wrightventidos - thanks for the advice. My old bearings are completely gone, but the outside and inside of the bearings are still there - the inside attached to the shaft and the outside stuck inside of the motor housing. I can't get either off easily. Any advice?
@SkolVikingsGuy I had to use a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to cut the inner race of the bearing off of the motor shaft. I put a very small groove in the motor shaft when I did it this way, but it should be fine.
Do not buy a Bosch whatever you do! The holes in the sprayer are TOO SMALL and become clogged! I rinse our dishes well before I put them in the dishwasher. I am so glad our Bosch died a natural death of only 5 years, which is ridiculous for how expensive they are! Don't believe me about Bosch's sprayer holes being too small? Then google search "Bosch dishwasher food trapped in sprayer arm" Click on that first forum and the first message on that forum, you will see it when you google it.
@BlogShag the only reason our Bosch continued to clean dishes as long as it did was because every 3 cycles had to clean the tiny holes that spray water out, because the way the Bosch is constructed those sprayer holes were way too small and always getting clogged (and I rinse our dishes well before I load them) I'm glad our Frigidaire has larger spray holes. I would not recommend the Bosch because of the tiny sprayer hole issue alone even when it was working the clogged hole issue got real old!
@BlogShag Our Bosch went kaputz in 5 years. Sorry. All of these dishwashers are not made to last these days. Whether they are more expensive like Bosch or not.
The sad part is, you pay for top of the line these days and you STILL get cheap plastic. One would expect cheap plastic for a 300 dollar dishwasher, not an 1100 dollar dishwasher.......Seems best to just buy the bottom of the line since they are all cheaply made. That way if something happens, it's not as devastating.
Hey, thanks so much for this video. I have the same machine, different year, but basically the same, and after only 2 years, my machine is doing the EXACT same thing. My DH and I will be taking it apart tomorrow, just like you showed here. Kenmore stinks! We have a Kenmore fridge and after 2 years the glass shelf exploded on me, and a freezer shelf broke as well as two pegs holding the crisper shelf up. We are DONE with Kenmore!!! Thank you again for the awesome video! :)
I had the same dishwasher the pump did not get loud until about 2.5 years old but I did have the circuit board go out at 18 months this dishwasher is crap. I will never buy a kenmore product had a microwave crap out from them after only 2 years. I know they are not the manufacturer it was Whirlpool, but in doing some research the failed parts were actually designs that Sears wanted and have friends with whirlpool products and they are designed better and have not had these issue's
OH that's interesting!!!!!!! I was very aware Whirlpool used to make Kenmore stuff but I wasn't aware that Kenmore asked Whirlpool to design it differently as in the motor/parts etc......I have A whirlpool Dishwasher purchased in 2004 (middle of the line) and it's still working. I have had no problem with it. It makes a grinding noise but it goes away. I suspect it's the chopper chopping up something. Doesn't happen often and usually at the very beginning of the cycle.
This can be fixed for about 25 bucks. The fix last for about 2 years. The seal will start to seep again, the bearing noise will get increasingly louder over a month or two.. The motor bearings are actually skateboard bearings I recommend your get the sealed bearings. Just type in 608-2rs into Google and you can pick you bearing. Order impeller seal kit part#8531017. Remove rust from shaft use some WD-40 and knock the off the bearings. Tap the new bearings on install seals. reassemble like new
@wrightventidos I just took this motor apart yesterday, and the rusted bearing seemed to have some sort of metal part surrounding it. I damaged it getting the old bearing off, is it important for the reassemble? I can email a photo if you like.
Great Video. I have one just like it that has been leaking for years and ruined the floor underneath. It just started making noise about a month ago so I took it apart and was very upset with what I found. I posted some pics.
Thanks, very much! I think this is exactly the problem with my dishwasher, which just conked out on me, and which I'm going to disassemble today & take a look at. Nice to know ahead of time what the potential problem might be.
I did not engineer this unit so I can not truly identify what default in the system allowed water to get to the motor bearing other than the motor shaft pump seal. It is a possibility that a seal lubrication is missing in the faulty assembly. Only the manufacturer would know. By replacing the pump assembly which comes complete with a new motor, hopefully I will get another 2 years use of this dishwasher for my cost of $180. Which I believe, would have been the same cost for an extended warranty.
What! Replace with another defective bearing assembly- only to fix it in 18 months. hmmmm? Looks like leakage from somewhere else in the unit. If it was me - I'd seal all that plastic housing up with silicone, especially where it breaks apart. Run a bead all the way around. Seems water has reached the bearing grease/lubricant on the shaft and crystallized it, and thats what toasted the bearing (over time) lack of proper lubrication.
