  • You saved my guitar's life! Awesome vid.

Can you do a video on adjusting the fretboard's action? I need a good one of those.

  • Thanks thanks and thanks for this video! you saved my day :)

  • Great video, man.

  • I have a dean ml floyd rose but I'm not sure how to jam the tremolo so that it doesn't dive etc. please help!

  • Thanks man, it looks easy this way.

  • Just did it. took about 3 attempts to get it all right. took me about an hour and a half, but i got there :) thanks loads!

  • Thank you SO much, I was tuning my tremolo tonight and it dived into the body, this is my first flloyd rose and i had no idea what to do but panic... will definately be using thia technique to fix it all when i get home tomorow afternoon. Many thanks.

  • thanks man you kick ass

  • i was sitting here watching this vid with my electric in my lap. had to watch it two more times because im stoned and getting too into little jams i was playing lol. sorry it couldnt be helped. good vid tho. the suggestion of putting a stopper (aka stack of picks) behind the trem was exactly what i needed to see. much thanks

  • Much appreciated. Fills a definite gap.

  • you are a fucking life saver dude

  • Brilliant tutorial. Thank you very much, it taught me quite a bit!

  • hey man vid really helped but what about adjusting to tune to drop d from standard. I dont have a real floyd its a yamaha version so i cant use a d tuna how do you adjust the springs?

  • i have an ibanez and i want to drop it to D standard tuning

but if i drop tune, my tremolo falls deeper in the body how can i raise my tremolo?

  • @DylanRedMusic Tune it to D standard until level.

  • @thrash6664 okey

  • Is that a Music Man Axis or an EVH Wolfgang? :o

  • I have a MM BFR JPX and i'm also having same issues.... thanks for the demonstration.... cheers

  • Help me please!!!! Really getting troubles with this 3rd string.. Everytime i use the tremolo arm and pull it down, the 3rd string tunes up ( i mean its pitch goes up ,and to pitch it back down i have to make a vibrato or retune it) i dont why but only the 3rd string changes its tune when i pull down the tremolo arm, but the others strings stay in the standart tuning

  • this helped me alot! thankz bro, im now in C standard for dethklok :D you're awesome im so happy that i know how to function my own guitar fully now i had no idea at first about the spring tension until like yesterday, i tried tuning down i got a lot of fret buzz and shit, but thanks again you saved me a shit load of money

  • hey can anyone plz tell me how i can get the cords of the guitar closer to the neck with the floyed rose bridge modified to drop d i would really appreciate it !!

  • I'm trying to tighten my springs so that when I bend a string the others don't go flat, but for some reason I can't tighten the springs and stay in standard tuning without the tremolo falling into the guitar. I have been trying to fix this for 5 hours now, but it still doesn't work.

  • Hey mang, thanks, I had forgotten steps in this process and your video helped 100%.

    You'dabest

  • I need help.. I really do.. I can't tune my guitar at all.. Because I'm paranoid about the sound of my guitar so I tightened the nut so much it pinched and now won't tighten.. what do I do? Please.. I fucked it up D:

  • @xsabaskatesx Check if the nut is stripped , if so replace it. Check if the screw is stripped , if so replace it. ONLY tighten the nut enough to lock the strings. Test this by pushing individually on the strings once locked 1 inch behind the tuner post. String goes sharp? , tighten more. Keep tightening until it stays stable, any tighter is just going to risk stripping the screw again. A TINY bit tighter might be needed fi you use really heavy guage (more than 10-46) but not much.

  • Hi my guitar now has fret buzz just on A string on 7th and rest of frets.I have realized that tightening the string reduces the buzz.so how can i tighten this string without touching the ideal tremolo position so much?

  • I have that same guitar. I'm fairly good at setting up Floyd's buy I've come to the assumption that unless you have a REAL Schaller or Gotoh Floyd Rose its just not going to match up at all. I can do about 4 dives before I have to retune it.

  • HEY nice vid... bt i'v got a prob... I'm tuning mine from 2steps down to standard. when tuning the bottom 3 strings, the upper strings go sharp. plus, the springs become too tight. wen i remove the picks to open the dive, they shoot back. the nuts is almost full tight-in. wat 2 do?? pls help

  • @breakthebars How many springs do you have in the back? You may need to add another one or adjust the position of them to create more spring pull. If they're straight try putting them at an angle.

  • @ashasha3 Earlier I had 3. Now i've added 4 in parallel to each other with the centre holes empty, sumthing lyk

    ||_|| . The bridge is close to parallel to the body, not exactly parallel bt now the tuning is Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.I cant get the standard tuning. also the action has increased.

  • @breakthebars wow... a little more experimentin broke the 1st string... i'll hv 2 take to the tech nyway now. n all this took me much more than jst 5-10 minutes. it ate up hours!! this tuning thing sucks~~!!

  • @breakthebars I'm not really into the whole drop tuning, but I would imagine that you had some pretty thick strings on there and they may be causing a lot more tension on there; perhaps trying some thinner strings would help. Also you may need to adjust the action and even the truss rod because the tension difference is so drastic. You're probably looking at a whole setup to be honest.

  • @ashasha3 Ya they were pretty thick 0.12 gauge... i'll get thinner ones for standard tuning. thnx

  • Okay, my EVH is not hulled behind the bridge for the pitch raising effect. So, can I still float mine?

  • @jessejafrnd Nope, I have the same problem with my Axis, it's flat against the body so it's dive only. Only thing I don't love about that guitar.

  • @ashasha3 Thought so, It's cool, don't over abuse the whammy much anyway, Just hate that annoying "knock" when I release it and it slams back against the body ugh. So, no trem can float without the occomidating cavity. 10-4

  • i have a floyd rose and whenever it goes out of tune it goes sharp. actually i cant tune it because by the time i get half way thru its out of tune it goes sharp not flat. what causes that?

  • @xjun2001 So as you tune up on one string the others go sharp?

  • @ashasha3 yep. i had to take all my strings off to fix somthing and i set the intonation in A440 then i drop down to d and my tremlo was pulling back on the strings pulling them sharp. i adjusted it the the way you show and now i can tune without pulling sharp. but even when i lock it down i still have trouble keeping it in tune when i bend strings. it is a ibanez licensed floyd rose. any suggestions? oh and i dont even use the whammy bar

  • @xjun2001 Are you talking about tremolo dive? Basically when you bend a string with your fretting hand the bridge dives and the rest of the strings go a little flat? If so there's really nothing you can do short of blocking it for dive only and cranking the springs down so that it doesn't float OR block it completely so it doesn't move OR install a Tremol-no and use that to lock it when you don't want to use the tremolo.

  • @ashasha3 after messing with all night its starting to stay in tune better. my pressure pads on my locking nut has some groves worn in them so ill replace them and try the tremol-no. thank you for your help

  • so i have to tune it into my favorite when i block the trem right?

  • @nonpoint666rocks Yeah, block it, tune it and adjust the spring tension.

  • @ashasha3 i will try it today, thanks for making this video man, by the way do you happen by coincidence to know anything about pickups? i have a problem with the bridge pickup, or using it, i don't know, it just sounds without any distortion and barely any volume either, i have heard around google something about magnets falling and people having the same problem but i don't know

  • @nonpoint666rocks Magnets don't usually fail, but connections do. Check your solder joints and wires. A good test if you don't have a meter or soldering iron is to open up the control cover while plugged into your amp and gently jiggle your wires while playing with it on the suspect pickup. If you hear noise or a burst of sound it's a solder joint. It can also be a bad switch, so go through all the positions a bunch of times pretty fast to try to clean out any dust or junk.

  • @ashasha3 thanks, it seems to be a solder joint because sound came back again when i touched but temporarily, and then i touched it again and it came back, do you think i should send the guitar to germany to fix this problem? is this a factory problem? if it its the company i bought it from will take care of the reparation, but its a long time without the guitar, and by the way, if one of the locking nut's screws striped and i can no longer use it, is the only solution is changing it right?

  • Thanks for this vid, it really helped me out. I got my first Floyd Rose a couple of days ago and decided to change the strings from 11s to 9s, I've watched a lot of vids lately on how to set up/tune a FR but this one nailed it for me (the picks in the trem is a great idea), my guitar is now in perfect tune and no matter how I abuse the trem arm it's staying in tune - cheers!

  • hey great video, i have a problem though. my bridge tension to string tension is good but its never at level with the body i messed up the screws at the top the ones right under the bridge pick up. i was told something about that was for adjusting action but idk, its all uneven, one side is higher than the other. any tips?

  • @PunkisthenewBlack what kind of guitar?

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for the help sir

  • So I just put regulars on my guitar which has had light strings on it since I first bought the guitar. I'm adding another tremolo spring, but what should I do if the strings keep going flat really quickly?

  • @RedSandStudios Is it a locking nut? If so than if it's doing that after going through the steps than something is up at either the knife edges or possibly the trem posts being unstable.

If it's not a locking nut it could be the spring tension, but most likely it's the nut itself (strings can bind in there) and a combination of the string wraps around the tuners. As you move the tremolo the wraps can get slack in them and tuning is all over the place. Let me know which one you have.

  • @ashasha3 I actually have self-locking tuners, which is definitely awkward for me to deal with.

  • @RedSandStudios Ok, that's a good thing in this case though. Make sure that when you string it up that you pull the string fairly tight so that there isn't a complete wrap around the peg. Once you start cranking it will lock onto it.

After that look at your nut. Make sure that the slots are wide enough for the new string gauge and aren't binding and use some lube. I like graphitall, but you can even use pencil lead to make it slicker. I've even heard people use chapstick.

  • @ashasha3 Alright thank you for the help.

  • I have a question: the picks i put in the back of the guitar (Ibanez RG) aren't falling out when i adjust the screws. what am i doing wrong?

  • @abrahamaho Not sure. Try 'assisting' them without just ripping them out.

It's not super critical, you can kind of work it into tune if you are off by just tightening them down each a bit at a time until it's in tune again as long as you DON'T touch the tuners while doing it and it was in tune when in the parallel position to begin with.

  • thanks a ton. You really saved me on this one. +1 like

  • thanx mate .. great help

  • Thanks, you make it look easy. The steps shown along with your commentary makes the process more clear to me than any of the other videos or articles I've ever seen. You've taken the mystery out of it for me! The Ibanez RG Prestige I got on clearance was never right but now I think I can make it right thanks to you.

  • awesome! this worked wonders for my (untuneable) ibanez rg-47ex! thanks so much for this video.......... i guess i didnt waste $600 lol

  • @ERJ94 It's an OLP MM1FR. They had the licensing from Musicman about 4 years ago and made a pretty good version of it. They changed manufacturers and started the Sterling line after that and I've checked out a few of them. They cost about twice as much and aren't any better at all. The OLP was a great guitar. I sold it a few years ago and bought a 'real' Axis and the OLP compared very favorably to it. The pickups were also very good for an import.

  • So will I be able to go into drop c if I follow this video?

  • @BA1221 yeah man, finally

  • i just bought a schecter C-1 custom FR and I had the shop to roughly set it up for me. However, I feel that the strings are a little bit too hard to bend (they were softer at the shop). Is there any way I can make them become softer? The guy at the shop also mentioned something about the springs being new and its still hard. He told me to dive a lot so that the spring become looser. Does this have anything to do with the touching being hard? Thx

  • @Jimmy14460 Everytime you bend a string it is to go to a certain pitch or else it's kind of pointless. On a fixed bridge it's going to get there quicker because the strings are not losing tension because there is no tremolo dive. The difficulty is based on the string "stretching" to that pitch. So if the springs are "softer" than you have to bend physically further to reach the same pitch. So it may feel softer with other springs, but you've still got to reach the same pitch regardless.

  • help.... i cant open the panel to the springs. :( I removed all the screws but its not going off....

  • @FrozenSparky Take a piece of tape and stick it to the cover and try to lift it off with that. If it's never been off it's probably just kind of stuck on there. Sometimes holding it so that the cover points towards the ground and tapping it will get it to pop off. Just don't try to pry it off with a screwdriver or something because it will dent the wood. If all else fails you can try a large screw into one of the holes so that it grabs the plastic and not the wood and try to pop it out.

  • @ashasha3 thanks for the reply :D i was worried i wont break it or something but i just grabbed it with claws and it went off without damaging anything :)

  • hi , i bought a new ibanez guitar RG , and the space between the strings and neck is a bit more than what it should be , should i lossen the springs so they'll be in the right place ??

  • @chrisnevermore No. You are talking about adjusting action which is done by turning the trem posts up or down. Messing with the spring tension will mess with your tension which will effect tuning.

  • Thnks for uploading this, it's probably the best guide on utube. i am goin to follo ur steps on how to tune it, but b4 i do so, id like to ask 2 questions. i recently bought a schecter syn custom, and right now i hve 4 springs on the back of my guitar, but i want to make it 3 so i can dive more easily. Is there a special technique to take out a spring? and also, when i hold a chord down and strum the strings, buzzing sounds come from the nut. is there anyway to fix that? thanks a lot man :)

  • @EGuitarFreak94 Make sure that the springs are spaced evenly in the back (similar to in the video) and you should be fine with 3.

The nut is buzzing? Either the lock nuts aren't tight (which will go away when you clamp them down or it's buzzing somewhere on the neck or there is a possiblity that something else is loose. Without seeing it in person it would be hard to tell. Just try to isolate the noise and tighten it down or report back here.

  • @ashasha3 Thanks for replying, so i shud jus loosen the springs by the screws and take one out by hand and space them evenly? Oh and i untightened the nut locks and took them out, and ur right, the buzzing isnt coming from the nut, cuz when i strummed the strings with fingered chords, there was still some buzzing. I tightened em 2, and still, there's buzzing. when i first got the guitar and played with it, it was fine. but one day, i unlocked the nut, didnt adjust the fine tuners to the all

  • @ashasha3 *to all aline to the middle, and started tuning it. i think the problem has something to do with string action, or some kind of bar at my headstock, not sure wht it's called, but it keeps the strings down, if u cud see the pic of the guitar, it might help. the bridge is not exactly parallel 2 to the body of the guitar, but ill try to fix tht first by adjusting a screws behind. or if theres another way, pls state tht aswell, sorry for bothering u a lot, and thanks for ur help :)

  • @EGuitarFreak94 No problem.

The bar behind the nut on the headstock is so that when you tighten down the locking nuts the tuning doesn't change that much. If it wasn't there then the angle from nut to tuner would cause the string to pull sharp when you lock it. Not all guitars need this so nobody should freak out if they are missing it. Most angled headstocks are fine without one.

  • Hey the tension on my high strings is pretty rough, and the trem still isn't fully parallel, its diving ok and staying in tune but the high strings are way to hard to play, is there anything I can do to fix it?

  • @LichKingSkullWart What do you mean by the high strings being too hard to play? If it's tuned to pitch than the tension is correct and there's nothing you can do about that. But if the action is too high (strings being too far from the fretboard) than you need to adjust the action. That requires lowering the posts that the bridge rest against a bit. Don't turn them with full string tension on there though because it can mess up the knife edge. And a little is a lot with adusting that.

  • No I mean, as in the higher strings feel tight, I was thinking about getting a lower gauge next time and then setting that up instead. i think I did a pretty good job seeing as my tremolo fell out when I was putting in the strings last time! Haha.

  • @minpinful It could a nunmber of things. Check the trem posts to make sure they aren't moving and that they don't have nicks on them or burrs ont he knife edges. Also take a good look at the nut when you dive and raise up. I've got one right now that the nut is moving on and was causing issues.

Lube the knife edges with some light grease and if everything is tight than I don't know what to tell you.

  • i think i love this guy

  • I have a question. i just ordered five new springs for my trem. i want to have heavier strings. i currently have tens on, but i want 12s. will five springs be enough? btw i play in standard tuning.

    please reply asap!!!!

  • @Guitar1hero23 Z As stupid as this may sound, you never know until you try. 12's are probably a bit hefty, but with 5 springs you should be able to crank it down to where it works.

If you've got any friends or konw of any forums where guys are doing that they would be a better source of info. Common sense tells me that it'll be fine, but you never know until you do it.

    Best of luck!

  • Thankyou! Out of all the videos I watched, you are the only one that actually helped me.

    You sir, should be commended.

  • man! that was SO useful ! you've got no idea how much you helped me ! thank you

  • informative video. Thanks!! Cant wait for more. How do YOU string one?

  • Is it normal to have two springs in the back on a synchronized tremelo?

My guitar action feels stiff and tight, should I a third spring?

  • @wisesatyr72 The number of springs really comes down to just a matter of how many it takes to get it balanced. Some people use thicker gauge strings which require more springs, some people like the way that more springs feel when using the tremolo.

Basically there is no hard/fast rule as long as you have at least 2 on there (in order for it to pull evenly).

  • my guitar was tuned a half step down and every time i tried to retune it to perfect tune it just went back to a half step. then i found this video and i was able to fix my guitar. it is now back in perfect tune. thanks a bunch man. i know it's gonna sound weird but.....

    i love you.

  • when i dive, and bring it back up, my bridge is still curved down a little afterward. and then if i pull the bar back, it goes back to normal, parallel with the body. do you have any idea what the problem is or how to fix it?

  • @BUFFW Check the posts that the tremolo mates against and make sure that they don't move around. Also check to make sure that there are no burrs or anything on the knife edge to make it bind. If the spring tension is right than it has to be getting hung up at the fulcrum point somehow (assuming that the strings are locked). You could also try a little bit of some lube where the tremolo mates to the posts.

  • @ashasha3

where is the post so i don't lube up the wrong thing.... lol

  • @ashasha3

also, what kind of lube should i use? anything?

  • @BUFFW The post is the part that screws into the face of the guitar that the tremolo rests against.

If you have a vintage style tremolo (like a fender strat) with 6 screws you aren't going to have posts.

  • Nice video! Helped a lot :D

  • dude, now my floyd rose is messed up. every time i put the springs the floyd rose goes OVER the stoppers. i can't figure out how i can fix this....PLEASE HELP :(

  • @graham1angel Are you talking about the two posts that the floyd rose mates against? The only way that would happen as far as I know is if you have no strings on the guitar. If that's the case, put some strings on there before putting the springs in. If the strings are on there than just try one spring at a time until you get it semi-dialed in with the tension. Make sure that the claw that holds the springs isn't screwed all the way down to the body either.

  • @ashasha3 yea, i figured that out like 10 minutes after the post, but now my problem is the floyd rose, its tilted. i use .10's gauge strings and it was fine until a string broke. then ever since my floyd rose has been tilted. also, for some reason i can't make the screw budge at all, im guessing i need some more springs but, im trying to do this without having to buy anything.

  • @ashasha3 what do i do if the floyd rose constantly tilts when i tune the guitar?

  • @graham1angel The spring tension is too weak in that case. Trying to do it by 'winging' it is a real pain.

First thing you need to do is get a full set of strings and then follow the video. The missing string will mess up the balance. Think of it as two opposing forces like in tug of war. If one side (the strings in this case) is pulling harder than it pulls to that side more. The video helps you set that balance. But you need all the strings on there to do it right.

  • @ashasha3 so that's why, cuz ever since my d string broke it's been downhill ever since. also, what do you mean by 'doing it by winging it'?

  • Thankyou so much for making this video ashasha, I bought my first locking trem ibanez a few years ago and have been baffeled as to the correct way to re-string and tune up. This may not be text book stuff but it works amazingly well and has solved a huge ass problem that has been bugging me for a long time!

    Thanks so much!

  • wat if u wanna key it down to drop b?

  • Hey man i always use this vid fore my guitars everytime and works 100% for me :) if you ever get free time could you please make a Tutorial about Straightening a Warped neck :D ive watched other vids on youtube and they dont explain much unless you could link me a good video.

  • thanks man! this really helped :) i had no idea what was wrong with my guitar, my cousin said to look it up, thanks, now my guitar sounds right again :D

  • does the tension have to be perfectly balanced? or can u take or give a bit a tension?

  • what guitar is this ?

  • @PaczkA2266627 It's an OLP MM1 with a floyd rose. I don't remember a whole lot about it because I sold it a while back, but it's basically an import copy of the Musicman Axis.

  • Thanks, This video was AWESOME :)

But only one problem, when I watched this it looked like your tremolo bridge was slightly pushed down into the body.

Mine is doing the opposite, and it is actually pointing upwards. What should I do? I don't know what happened

  • @andyyroxx Not sure without looking at your guitar, but the main thing is that the base of the tremolo needs to be parallel to the surface of the guitar. That of course is for floyd rose style trems.

If it's a Fender or a vintage style than it will probably be angled upwards slightly. I prefer about 1/8" of clearance to the back to pull back on it a bit.

But as long as it isn't too far one way or the other and it's in tune and the intonation is good it's not the end of the world.

  • Absolutely amazingly helpful!! Just got a ESP KH-202 YESTERDAY and its all suited up ready to rock thanks to you!!! Cheers m8!! :D

  • i love you man your my hero

  • Thank you !!! Very very helpful!!!

  • thanks so much for making this video, i didnt know hat happened to my guitar and thought it might be broken forever

  • is tht a wolfgang?

  • @midgetrocker36 That's a Music Man.

  • I have an Ibanez GSA60 Model and it has a standard Tremolo setup, I notice that there are screws on my tremolo bridge. If I tighten or loosen the screws I noticed that something is going on with the strings. What are these screws for?

  • Hey Dude, Great Vid! Very Helpful, I Have A Quick Question.

I Have A B.C. Rich Jr V. With A Floyd Rose Trem System.

I Just Restrung It A Few Days Ago And Since Then I'm Getting

What Sounds To Be Nothing But Fret Buzz On The Low E, A, And D Strings, After The Seventh Fret On Each String.

Any Idea On What Could Be Wrong? Any, And All Help Is Appreciated.

  • @Metalhead81592

Did you change the height of the trem posts? Are they the same gauge strings? Are you tuned to the same pitch as before?

Basically is there anything different from before?

  • to answer someone's question half step down is Eb or E flat, hendrix, and most everyone uses this besides standard E. If you're looking at any tuner, it's going to be the red light all the way to the left that is a lower case "b, don't tune it to the middle or green light, that's the standard note, that's half step down you can also do it by ear by backing it off a bit, but not too much, not even a whole note!

  • Do you know if for a floyd rose that 5 springs are better than 3 and why or why not? thanks

  • @redlinerl480 It's all about personal preference 9 times out of 10. If you play with heavy strings than you may 'need' more springs, but generally whatever keeps the string to spring tension equal is fine. Some people like the stiffness of 5 and others even use 2 springs. I personally prefer 3 because it's what I am used to.

  • Hi thanks man. Now I know what I paid guitar center 20 bux to do, back when I didn't know anything. I knew that all they did was tighten the screws on the back, it wouldn't stay in tune and would break the high e string just tuning it to standard! Now I'm building my own elec. guitars but with fixed bridges. I blocked my bridge for a few years with some wood stick i bought from meijer stacked a few together and wrapped tight with electrical tape, it worked well.

  • that actually helps allot hey thanks man you are a star thanks again

  • how should i adjust the springs for half step down tuning?

  • @dli42395 Follow the video except tune to a half step down instead of standard pitch before adjusting the springs. It works like a charm.

  • @ashasha3 cool! thx man!

  • When I use my tremolo (pushing it in and out) it loses its tuning can someone help?

  • @Brain1ndustry maybe you need thicker strings because i had that problem as well. as I used my whammy bar more, a spring kept ripping and i tuned it and it kept on dropping. i switched the gauge and it's good now. you should try it.

  • @Brain1ndustry

Does it have a locking nut?

  • HEy good video, i have a question though about these tremolos.. i have a schecter with a floyd rose and i had a problem, i untuned it and all then i was told i had to reset it up and so i did.. the strings on the guitar were really loose and first when it was new but after i reset the floyd tremolo the strings feel really tight...can you tell me what might have happened? thanks.

  • @AvengedTimes If it's tuned to pitch than the tension of the strings are the same as before. I know that it may feel different to you, but I can't see how it would effect string tension since that's determined by the pitch of the string.

I could see where adding a spring or changing the spring tension could make the floyd not dive as easily when you are bending so it would feel tighter there, but that's a good thing. You get better finger vibrato action. How many springs do you have?

  • @ashasha3 3

  • @donepearce is not

  • @abmt55 Well, that told me!

  • @donepearce :D

  • This about the most helpfully video I seen on YouTube on Floatin tremelos! Thanks! I think I know how to resolve my problem!

  • thanks heaps!

this video helped me out quite alot..

  • So simple, yet so complex, thank you so much for showing, I'm off to go and try this!

  • if its not recessed, can you still do some of that wicked pull of shit?

  • hey. this was a great video. i just put in new aprings in the back (i go into low tunings and it only had two springs when i got it) and when i bend up with the tremelo it doesnt feel smooth. can you help me rectify this problem?

  • @disturbedpool you probly need to apply graphite to your nut

  • thanks man. helped a lot

  • Dude can you please help me ?

I am new with the floyd rose system. I have sn Ibanez RG370.

The problem is that my guitar is not getting a good sustain. I play i note and it feels so dead. I get a feeling that its maybe because of the high tension in the strings. Can you identify whats the problem with my guitar ?

  • @OsyProductions

Well, it's really hard to diagnose over the internet. When you say dead are you talking about unplugged too?

    Is there any buzzing anywhere?

How close are the pickups to the strings? If the pickups are cranked up real hight and they have strong magnets the field can kill the sustain sometimes.

  • @ashasha3 no there aint no buzzing. Its like you know when i hit the note, it doesnt ring for long.

  • @OsyProductions your spring tension is too low if your note is not ringing out. or in other words (simple 3rd grade math) strings>springs . also this means the tension is not even so you need to take your back plate off of the back of your guitar and tighten those 3 (or four depending on what you or the company did with it) springs inside with a screwdriver. your welcome :)

  • Thank you your video helped me out more then you'll ever know.

  • hey i tuned my guitar to standard d tuning, but when i dump the strings my g string and my a and d strings go way out of tune. Any help on that would help

  • @XB0XFR34K Does it have a locking nut? If so than check to make sure that the lock itself is indeed working. I just have a feeling that since those two strings share a clamp that it could be the issue.

  • @ashasha3

haha no worries dude im just a complete idiot, i forgot to screw the locking nuts in after i tuned the guitar down

  • GAWD! Thanks a lot for this tutorial, so far the best one i've seen. Got my guitar all tuned in and ready to go. Three thumbs up! Yeah... You heard me... THREE!!

  • ok i have a problem with my guitar, when i play the high E or the B string on the 3rd -2nd-1st fret it makes this really twangy sound- can anyone tell me what i have to do to fix this?

  • @BloodOverBullets Check to make sure that it isn't buzzing anywhere on the neck. Is it doing it with open notes or when fretted?

  • @ashasha3 only when fretted

  • @BloodOverBullets It's either a high fret around the 4th fret or the action needs to be raised at the bridge a bit.

I would fret the guitar at each fret that is giving you problems and see if the string is hitting the next fret by looking closely and tapping the string.

  • WOW thank you so much i jus bought a shecter hellraiser with a floating tremolo and i thought it wsa fucked up bcuz it was all the way back, now i saw this video and i know why it does that now THANK YOU SO MUCH THAT $900 dollars was not a waste!!!! i thank you so so so so much

  • this is EXACTLY the help i needed. thanx alot man!

  • Hey I have a similar problem; My guitar has 3 springs and I recently changed the strings from 9's to 10 gauge strings. I tuned to standard E but the bridge keeps diving back into the body. I tightened the screws all the way but the problem reoccurs and I cant balance it. Do I add a spring or adjust them somehow? BTW I have an Edge 3 trem on my ibanez.

  • i had the same problem with my ESP,,,,,,if the tremolo goes in to the body, you need to loosen the scruse ,and if the trem goes away from the body you need to tighten the scruse ,,,,,its a long process,,lol

  • im kind of new with this floyd rose stuff i played for 2 years with a tailpiece guitar (Gibson lp studio to be precise) so i've heard that the guitar has less pickup noise with the backplate off, is that true?

  • @CiviC092 I highly doubt it. The springs could create some noise if they squeaked or something, but as for effecting the pickups they are on the other side of the guitar and we are talking about a piece of plastic that has no RF filtering or inducing properties.

  • thanks man this helped alot!

  • if i set it up tuned to D standard, will i still be able to tune it to drop c with the fine tuners????

  • If you can do it now then you should be still be able to, but in my experiences dropping it that far does effect the balance too much and it's a mess. This video is for getting it to work optimally and changing the tuning afterwards does change that.

  • @MH446 bad idea, you'll still lose tension in the bridge if you do that. I tried to adjust only the 6th string for dropped D tuning, and even then all the other strings would be out.

Buy another floyd rose guitar if you want a different tuning.

  • Would it be possible for me to tune to drop C or C# with this method? I am using a heavy gauged string set 13 - 56, so I dunno if I'd have to have 4 springs, or 3, or just two or if my spring tension should be tight or loose. Could you help me out please? and also..I'm pretty sure I'd have to mess with the intonation as well, I have a licensed floyd rose. if I need looser spring tension, how do i get it?

  • Yes, but you won't be able to retune on the fly (you have to readjust spring tension each time). Of course that's the case no matter what method you use, it's just the way the FR is designed to work.

If you can't get the tension loose enough you can remove a spring or two (you need to have at least 2 springs for it to work correctly, but other than that it's up to you, there's no set rule).

  • As for intonation, I always at least check it. I've had cases where changing string gauge throws it out and cases where it was fine. Without seeing it myself I can't say for sure, but I'd definitely check it.

  • Now, if I were to tune to drop C, but the spring tension was too tight or too loose, how would I be able to tell? I know I wouldn't be able to use the EXACT steps you took, but the process would be pretty similar. Would it be obvious that my spring tension is too tight?

  • how do i know if i shud tighten or loosen my springs?

  • if your tremolo if raised from the back when tuned, then you need to tighten your spring and vice versa.

  • yo dude i removed my strings off without putting the something on the tremlo now its just completely fucked the strings are so close to the bridge not even a sound would be made can you please help me out i will post a video of the guitar please read this comment i got a gig comming up and my guitar is just destroyed
