blk goes to a phase. red to b phase. and if this was three phase, blue to c phase. so yes class, they do matter were they go. never use #10 on 40 amps. like this scab did. and keep your condutors on one side. not slipt grounding and grounded conductors.
bare wires? grounds? ;) also i am with mega.. though red is a phase.. red-black-blue ;)
