  • Transatlantic are seen singing this on the tour documentary part of the Whirlwind Tour DVD!

  • "The woman I'm with" is my girlfriend at the time, Janet, now a proud mother.

  • who told this man to choose a career in music- he can`t sing

  • @hughmooney61 Well I disagree - and he could certainly make hit records!

  • who is that woman hes with?

  • Top Man!

  • The grunting actually originated as a Beach Boys outtake way before King copied it.

  • @nickzedd No Nick - it was entirely original when I came up with it.

  • jag förstår inte erat resonemang denna låt heter hight on beliving och vist är det samma låt den svenska heter hooked on a beliving men döm inte i förväg era dj

  • i now know just *how gay* a man can get :/

  • @dig6dog Oh, quite gay, Dog, believe me.

  • @7oundof7 gotta say though, he does get credit for this awesome song intro .. much better than BJ thomas's (but not as cool as Blue Swede)

  • Of course Jonathan King could never sing but he knew how to exploit the show business and he had a sense of humour. All in all he was shit.

  • yes its the same j king

  • well growing up in the 70s thank fuck we had jonathan king.great music in the day.

  • Is this the same Johnathan King that did Everyone's Gone To The Moon?

  • louis theroux ? is it you ?

  • superstar, met him in about 2000 in inverness terrace. How the hell does a 42 year old man get overawed!

  • like blue swedes verson better

  • good 70's techno

  • Grate 70's techno

  • GREAT TUNE!!!! timeless thanks///

  • No; OnThis Spot; the chant had nothing to do with Running Bear - it was my idea to use the reggae rhythm in an unusual way, that's all.

  • @7oundof7

Whatever way this sound came about its a great little record no doubt about that!!

  • @7oundof7 ...if this really was your idea, in 1971 before reggae was "mash up de nation" then you were brilliant and ahead of your time--and Blue Swede grabbed your ball and ran all the way with it.

  • A quick Google answers/corrects most of the questions below. This song was originally recorded by BJ Thomas, who had a #5 hit with it in America in 1968, which you can hear right here on YouTube. In 1971, Jonathan King released this version, adding the American Indian chants from Johnny Preston's 1959 "Running Bear," also on YouTube. Obviously that was either a song that King liked as a child, or he just did it as a joke. Blue Swede made the chants more prominent and less like Preston's.

  • why the pic at :54?

  • Tortured genius sort. No excuse for what he done, but wow, the music........

  • Blue Swede copied it, but they rocked harder, in that Broadway theatre-pit sort of way that they do. I dunno why, but these ooga-chuckas sound kind of funny, but with Blue Swede, you actually BELIEVE them.

And none of it t explains, at all, WTF he was thinking??? I mean, does he have a thousand ideas a day this stupid, and somehow recognize the one that will become a smash hit? Or was this the only idea he had that month?

  • I think this man made one of the greatest ever contributions to modern music when he added that "ooga-chaka" part... But WHY did he do that?! It's so damn weird...

  • we all know what he done was wrong. but this fella sure made some great songs... and go on... admit it.... we love him

  • I hope you don't include me in that 'we' bit

  • weird.....but i remember it.....

  • yer the good ole days

  • at least he got the lyrics right. Blue Swede totally butchers the second verse.

  • so terrible

  • Guy cant even sing, shoulda been locked up for this..

  • Oh no Sphinx, they copied me!

  • He had a nice voice to be sure.

  • Fail big time

    Ripoff of Blue Swede, lol

  • No, this predates Blue Swede's version by 3 years. Go look it up.

It is, however, a cover of BJ Thomas' song from 3 years before.

  • Sorry, Jonathan King's version was copied by Blue Swede.

  • king by name, king of the seventies music scene by nature!!!!!

  • gee...I heard this on the radio today for the first time

I thought it was a modern band with a vintage sound to it...

    seems it IS vintage

    Great song!!! love it!!

  • I can't ever remember this!!

  • Bj thomas sang this..he was the orignal

  • Thank you!

  • jolly good song,what what

  • Great record from JK from the early 70s .. Its just one of many fun songs he recorded at that time. Thanks for posting!

  • Awesome !!!

    Thanks !

  • Wow some real ravers in the audience!

  • Sadly I didn't write this superb song; Mark James did (and recently passed away), a wonderful writer.

  • I cant find any reference on the web to suggest that he`s passed away . Are you sure ?

For anyone interested Mark James who composed this song also composed many Elvis songs including Suspicious Minds , Always On My Mind , Raised On Rock , Moody Blue and It`s Only Love .You can see Mark James on youtube - ` Mark James Blue Suede Heaven `

  • Everyone knows you did not write this song because you say JK sang it first. Everybody knows BJ Thomas sang it first.

  • @7oundof7

Still think u should re-release mary mary!! LOL.

  • Idiot

  • This is the worst crap I've ever heard. I thought the intro was a joke by some youtube kids, and that's saying a lot...

  • You have to admit her wrote some excellent music

  • it's about time someone uploaded one of his best songs, thank's

  • Jonathan King was spotted in Nice airport going through security. Alarms were set off and guards found a big metal bullet- shaped object in his bag. So was The Sun's favourite pervert aiding the war on terror? Well, it turned out that it was an old coin-keeper that his recently deceased mother owned that JK kept as a souvenir. Sadly, security didn't care for the sentimental story and it went straight in the bin.

  • i have this on a 45 released by decca in 1971 its a very rare copy was bought in 2001 from a record store in blackpool

  • thak god for blue swede this one is not good at all

  • twat!!!!

  • it.s wonderfool!!!this song it.s wery smile:)))

  • Well, it's verry good. But he wasn't first. Mark James wrote it and B.J. Thomas recorded it before JK did. But it's good in most versions.

  • ..and nobody else can sing it like BJ!

  • Sorry, i just watched BJ,s version, JK is 10 times better.

  • Couldnt JK claim co-writing credit for the OOKA CHOOKA intro ? After all Matthew Fisher`s ended up with co-writing credit for the intro of Whiter Shade of Pale !

The intro didnt exist on the original & earlier recordings but afterwards was used by Blue Suede & Hasselhoff .

  • jk is the man.clever as u like.not appreciated enuff.

  • Thanks for posting this song! This brings back some great memories for me. Top of the Pops, and Radio One Club, that my sister and I actually went to once, while we were on holiday in Weymouth... What a "Happy" feeling!

    Thanks again!
