@7oundof7 ...if this really was your idea, in 1971 before reggae was "mash up de nation" then you were brilliant and ahead of your time--and Blue Swede grabbed your ball and ran all the way with it.
A quick Google answers/corrects most of the questions below. This song was originally recorded by BJ Thomas, who had a #5 hit with it in America in 1968, which you can hear right here on YouTube. In 1971, Jonathan King released this version, adding the American Indian chants from Johnny Preston's 1959 "Running Bear," also on YouTube. Obviously that was either a song that King liked as a child, or he just did it as a joke. Blue Swede made the chants more prominent and less like Preston's.
Blue Swede copied it, but they rocked harder, in that Broadway theatre-pit sort of way that they do. I dunno why, but these ooga-chuckas sound kind of funny, but with Blue Swede, you actually BELIEVE them.
And none of it t explains, at all, WTF he was thinking??? I mean, does he have a thousand ideas a day this stupid, and somehow recognize the one that will become a smash hit? Or was this the only idea he had that month?
I think this man made one of the greatest ever contributions to modern music when he added that "ooga-chaka" part... But WHY did he do that?! It's so damn weird...
I cant find any reference on the web to suggest that he`s passed away . Are you sure ?
For anyone interested Mark James who composed this song also composed many Elvis songs including Suspicious Minds , Always On My Mind , Raised On Rock , Moody Blue and It`s Only Love .You can see Mark James on youtube - ` Mark James Blue Suede Heaven `
Jonathan King was spotted in Nice airport going through security. Alarms were set off and guards found a big metal bullet- shaped object in his bag. So was The Sun's favourite pervert aiding the war on terror? Well, it turned out that it was an old coin-keeper that his recently deceased mother owned that JK kept as a souvenir. Sadly, security didn't care for the sentimental story and it went straight in the bin.
Couldnt JK claim co-writing credit for the OOKA CHOOKA intro ? After all Matthew Fisher`s ended up with co-writing credit for the intro of Whiter Shade of Pale !
The intro didnt exist on the original & earlier recordings but afterwards was used by Blue Suede & Hasselhoff .
Thanks for posting this song! This brings back some great memories for me. Top of the Pops, and Radio One Club, that my sister and I actually went to once, while we were on holiday in Weymouth... What a "Happy" feeling!
Transatlantic are seen singing this on the tour documentary part of the Whirlwind Tour DVD!

@7oundof7 gotta say though, he does get credit for this awesome song intro .. much better than BJ thomas's (but not as cool as Blue Swede)

Of course Jonathan King could never sing but he knew how to exploit the show business and he had a sense of humour. All in all he was shit.

No; OnThis Spot; the chant had nothing to do with Running Bear - it was my idea to use the reggae rhythm in an unusual way, that's all.
