Brilliant, this is the absolute genius of SCTV. Light years ahead of today's writers/comics on SNL. Creative/bizarre satirical comedy is sadly gone forever.
I love how weird Rick Moranis' sketches got as SCTV progress. This and 'Murder in the Cathedral starring Buzz Aldrin's Mercury III Players' were the Apex of SCTV's bizarre brilliance.
LOL at Merv playing his theme song ala Close Encounters
@wookie72 Well, I can't be sure; of course it sounds like Douglas Rain, I guess that's the purpose. But Thomas is an excellent impressionist, as they all are, so it's not inconceivable that he managed to nail the voice.
@chalomirof63 The only reason I guessed it was Douglas Rain is that they managed to get John Marley to reprise his role for the Godfather parody. In any case, I don't think Rain was credited on the episode, so maybe you're right.
@wookie72 LOL - I didn't mean to sound snotty - sorry!! Yeah, I know about John Marley on The Godfather parody, and so of course they could have gotten Rain. I just checked The SCTV Guide, and maybe we're both wrong, as it says the voice of HAL is an "extra"! LOL. Listening to it again, I don't think it is Thomas. Whoops.
In the 1970s, when we had 3 or 4 channels to chose from, Merv Griffin was what you watched when there was positively nothing else on. It was one of the most boring talk shows ever...Really takes me back to childhood!
@TypesALot Merv may have had one of the more boring talk programs ( and perhaps even Merv himself knew that his shows were BS-fests) but it helped him make the money he needed to develop 2 of the most successful game shows of all time and be a billionaire. some of the topics he had were unfitting for the cheerful atmosphere of his show, ditto for the other singing Irishman talkshow host: Mike Douglas
Griffin and Douglas were both so ,so,so very much better than all these idiots we have now.Its obviously because of the mentality of the majority of Americans of younger generations lilke you that we have sunk to the level of contemporary T V in the USA
@frothingslosh Merv Griffin: great Gameshow creator and businessman but boring talkshow, kinda paved the way for the false goddess that is "the Oprah"

are you sure that's Dave Thomas? It sounds an awful lot like the real actor, Douglas Rain.
