the engine looked similar to the SR-71 which is an hybrid of jet and ramjet engine..first u use the jet to achieve a desired speed and then the air bypassed the jet and enters the ramjet.. nothing new..

According to "the web" SR-71s are powered by two Pratt and Whitney J-58 axial-flow turbojets with afterburners. i.e. you can't run them in space. The Scimitar engine is a rocket with an air-breathing mode.
