Atheism doesn't mean not believing in anything, but rather believing in something else than religion. I myself believe that the christian god do not exist, and I strongly doubt the existance of any god at all. You do not need religion to find such things, so why take refuge in illusions?

What I'd like to know is why almost every atheist "believes" in evolution? Aren't atheists suppose to be void of such consciousness altering believes? The way I see it, evolution is apart of a scientific belief, sense I haven't found solid evidence proving evolution. The point that I'm trying to make here: doesn't it take just as much faith to believe in something not proven in science then it does to believe in something not proven in religion?

Rather I'd just like to know an atheist's answer to this questions that I try to portray with a couple of paragraphs, rather than a single sentence. My question is: was atheism conceived to be a belief in not believing in anything, or is it just not believing in a god or gods? If it's just the opposite of believing in a god(s), than what makes up the belief? Also why is evolution always included?
I think you may be a little confused with what Atheism is. Its not the belief in not believing. We or I believe a lot of things. Atheism is a rather tricky word to define sometimes. A person can be an Atheist in believing in Zeus, but a Theist believing Christianity. But we usually ignore that, and say Atheism is not believing in God or Gods all together. Denying the Existence of a particular belief. But this doesnt mean we dont believe things.
Now, as for the question on what is atheism, you have to realize the 'a' is a prefix, meaning "not, anti', and 'theism' means to believe in extraterrestrial or supernatural powers without a basis of proof built entirely on faith. Essentially, atheists are people who do not believe in the supernatural in general, be it god, fairies or the whole lot. Furthermore, Atheism isn't a religion at all, which I will explain in the NEXT comment.
Evolution is brought up a lot because people tend to bring up creation a lot. We tend to believe in Evolution because it explains natural occurrences with evidence in ways no religion can. I dont know where you are hearing this about "void of consciousness altering beliefs". If anything we are out to understand the universe and to do so with logic and reason, to broaden our scope. Science is not a religion and doesnt claim things to be, without having evidence to prove it. part 1.
part 2. Faith is blindly believing something with no evidence. Like believing that a letter I just mailed will be arriving at your house in 2 minutes. You have no reason to believe that since you have no reason to, and there is no evidence to prove such things will happen. If you did believe that, then you have problem, ha. Science doesnt run on Faith, it doesnt Tell us things ARE, and that we must accept it because some scientist said so.
What you have defined is blind faith, not faith. If that's all there was, and if, as u say, there was no evidence for the truth of the Bible, I would never have become a believer (I was an atheist until I was 29; I'm now 59). Evolution isn't exclusively an Atheist 'belief' because it isn't a belief. We have evidence for evolution, from the fossil record to even simple observation. Point to fact, there is more pieces of evidence to display and prove the theory of evolution than there is to prove the theory of gravity. Aside from this, there are many religious folk who accept evolution as a fact or a possibility. Hell, both the last two popes said that Evolution is a plausible and enlightening possibility. So. Atheism is also not a religion. A religion is defined as a structure of traditions build around a given faith with certain rules and restrictions. Atheists do not live by a communal set of rules, we don't have traditions akin to all other atheists. We're just people who don't believe. Now. As for why to accept evolution, which seems to be a major issue for you, I suggest checking out Thunderf00t or AronRa, since they can sum up everything better than I, unless you want me to make vid series.

I myself believe that the christian god do not exist, and I strongly doubt the existance of any god at all. But even so, I find meaning in life; not an ojective one forced upon me by an ancient book, but the freedom of a subjective, personally created meaning. And I have a working system of ethics. You do not need religion to find such things, so why take refuge in illusions?

Would you consider suicide to be a rational activity, or one usually driven by unexamined emotion, depression, or other irrational activities? There's one example of people dying from their irrationality. If one knows that excessive drinking of alcohol is destructive to life is it rational to weekly get drunk to the point of unconsciousness, liver failure and eventual death? That's two.

What I'd like to know is why almost every atheist "believes" in evolution? Aren't atheists suppose to be void of such consciousness altering believes? The way I see it, evolution is apart of a scientific belief, sense I haven't found solid evidence proving evolution. The point that I'm trying to make here: doesn't it take just as much faith to believe in something not proven in science then it does to believe in something not proven in religion?

I don't mean to spark an argument over religion vs atheism, we need not more of those. Rather I'd just like to know an atheist's answer to this questions that I try to portray with a couple of paragraphs, rather than a single sentence. My question is: was atheism conceived to be a belief in not believing in anything, or is it just not believing in a god or gods? If it's just the opposite of believing in a god(s), than what makes up the belief? Also why is evolution always included?

I think you may be a little confused with what Atheism is. Its not the belief in not believing. We or I believe a lot of things. Atheism is a rather tricky word to define sometimes. A person can be an Atheist in believing in Zeus, but a Theist believing Christianity. But we usually ignore that, and say Atheism is not believing in God or Gods all together. Denying the Existence of a particular belief. But this doesnt mean we dont believe things.

Now, as for the question on what is atheism, you have to realize the 'a' is a prefix, meaning "not, anti', and 'theism' means to believe in extraterrestrial or supernatural powers without a basis of proof built entirely on faith. Essentially, atheists are people who do not believe in the supernatural in general, be it god, fairies or the whole lot. Furthermore, Atheism isn't a religion at all, which I will explain in the NEXT comment.

Evolution is brought up a lot because people tend to bring up creation a lot. We tend to believe in Evolution because it explains natural occurrences with evidence in ways no religion can. What you have defined is blind faith, not faith. If that's all there was, and if, as u say, there was no evidence for the truth of the Bible, I would never have become a believer (I was an atheist until I was 29; I'm now 59). If you're interested in seeing some evidence, just read "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell. BTW I have three degrees in math, so I'm not an anti-scientific ignoramus.

I don't know what kind of math degrees you have, but they must not be pure - i find it incredible that a mathematician doesn't see how irrelevant any evidence about this is. Evolution isn't exclusively an Atheist 'belief' because it isn't a belief. We have evidence for evolution, from the fossil record to even simple observation. Point to fact, there is more pieces of evidence to display and prove the theory of evolution than there is to prove the theory of gravity. Aside from this, there are many religious folk who accept evolution as a fact or a possibility. Hell, both the last two popes said that Evolution is a plausible and enlightening possibility. Atheists do not live by a communal set of rules, we don't have traditions akin to all other atheists. We're just people who don't believe. Now.
