Sheeesh, whats the point of having the internet if people cant even find simple information that 5 minutes in even the most basic library would get? WWI - 10million dead, WWII - 60million dead, approx. And this is the most appalling film - and thats the greatest compliment. The only war film I can think of that's realistic and doesn't glamourise it. Really difficult to watch but one that everyone should see.

Did the Germans elect Hitler to rule their country ? Were the Germans gettin slaves and stolen goods from ruled countries ? And at least did the Germans start war to get "life space" ? The Russians were about ideology, but the Germans were about being "master race" and domination over other races. You could become a comunnist but you couldn't become a Aryan.
Fun Fact: The boy in the lead role was hypnotized many times for this role to try and bring out the most horrific emotions and memories. Some intense stuff, but it makes this movie a really great one (Haven't seen it all, but I watched it breifly at school)

Attrocities were committed by both the Axis and Allies. War is terrible and I have found myself part of the middle-east conflict. Do not forget that German soldiers were deathly afraid of being captured by Russians for fear of being tortured never to be seen again. This war is over and may the attrocities committed herein never be seen again.

My grandma was a young mother with child on that time - also in Belarus. Two villages next to her village were burnt (also WITH inhabitants) by Germans, and she and some more women hided in the forest many months long because they were too scared. In some way I understand Russian soldiers who got revenge on German population later in 1945.
DO NOT WATCH THIS!!! This film is easily one of the greatest EVER made. I do not say this lightly. First of all, as someone else has pointed out, this is half way through the film. Do yourself a favour, get it on DVD or better still look out for it at your local arts centre. It is the cinema experience of a lifetime and well worth waiting for. Unlike an episode of Friends or a clip from American idol, this is CINEMA and really not for Youtube.

This movie makes the German Heer look like a band of drunken barbarians, while in fact it was the most disciplined army in the world. This kind of atrocities were normally carried out by SS Einsatzgruppen or non-German units, not by the normal Wehrmacht.
German fascists completely or partialy destroyed and burned 1710 cities and more than 70 000 villages, burned and destroyed more than 6 mil. buildings, which caused 25 mil. people to become homeless.
They destroyed 31 850 manufacturing facilities, about 65 000 km of railways, 4100 railroad depots, 36 000 post offices, telegraph offices etc.
Destroyed or plundered 40 000 hospitals, 84 000 schools, universities and institutes, 43 000 libraries.
Not only. As I said, usually(!) it was Einsatzgruppen. The Wehrmacht also had it's share of atrocities, I won't argue about that. But so have the Japs, Russians and Yanks.
My point is it was probably done in a more efficient way than is shown in this film. Not with drunk soldiers, wearing only underwear and with swastika's painted on helmets and having the time of their lives. It's just not realistic this way.

Fact: Khatyn was destroyed by the 118th police battalion which was formed in Kiev and was made up of Mostly Ukrainians and Russians in German uniforms. Grigory Vassiura was the headquarters chief. He was later tried and executed in Belarus in 1986 for the crime. It was an anti partisan action taken out on Belarusian civilians by Russian and Ukrainian men with pleasure. This is just a film.

dude,its not hard to learn about WW2,if the Germans hadn't attack the USSR they could have done a lot better in the war,but there were a few flaws to their tanks,the panther for example,it would brake on its way to battle. the tanks were very compicated so were hard to produce. if u watch some older more origanal propaganda,this isn't as dumb as the one i saw whitch pointed out lies in japanese propaganda. -.-

what propaganda??? that what happened really. i have been to a memorial of a village being burned with its inhabitans in belarus. i have heard my neighbours and grandparent's tell me what was heppening during the German retreat.

This movie makes the German Heer look like a band of drunken barbarians, while in fact it was the most disciplined army in the world. This kind of atrocities were normally carried out by SS Einsatzgruppen or non-German units, not by the normal Wehrmacht.

German fascists completely or partialy destroyed and burned 1710 cities and more than 70 000 villages, burned and destroyed more than 6 mil. buildings, which caused 25 mil. people to become homeless.
They destroyed 31 850 manufacturing facilities, about 65 000 km of railways, 4100 railroad depots, 36 000 post offices, telegraph offices etc.
Destroyed or plundered 40 000 hospitals, 84 000 schools, universities and institutes, 43 000 libraries.

Not only. As I said, usually(!) it was Einsatzgruppen. The Wehrmacht also had it's share of atrocities, I won't argue about that. But so have the Japs, Russians and Yanks.
My point is it was probably done in a more efficient way than is shown in this film. Not with drunk soldiers, wearing only underwear and with swastika's painted on helmets and having the time of their lives. It's just not realistic this way.

I know this may surprise you "kveldufr", but history is more complex than just black and white. Just because you've seen Schindler's List and played Wolfenstein 3d doesn't mean the Nazi's were all cartoon-like evil badguys with evil laughs everytime they decapitated a baby.

the bolsheviks extermined an entire people (kulaks) along with every minority within russia (including the jews in the 1950s) and they even wiped out 10% of their russian comrades.
communism was built upon slave labour (five year plans) and factory directors lied about numbers because they didn't want to get shot... such a great system.
60 million dead > 6 million dead.

The Bolsheviks didn't exterminate any minority and didn't try to. In fact in the 30ies there was a widespread policy of korenization in which the consciousness of ethnic minorities was strengthened. They got their own republics, newspapers and schools in their language and ethnic officials. Before 1917 every 2d inhabitant of Kiev was Russian, after Bolshevik intervention this was less than every 5th because the government supported migration of ethnic

stalin murdered 20 million people, still horrific i know, but 60 million would be over a third of the USSR's population at the time. i doubt stalin could have achieved what he did or won the war after murdering such a large percentage of his population.
the germans murdered 6 million jews yes, but also 5 million gypsies, homosexuals ect, over 20 million russians, 3 million non jewish poles and probably millions more across europe

don't be silly .. It is only american propaganda .. and fake numbers invented by Solzhenitsyn. Real statistics: From 1921 to 1953, was repressed approximately 4 million people. Of these, about 800,000 were sentenced to death. Furthermore, we assume that about 600,000 died in jail, so that the total number of victims is 1.4 million. + traitors who served in the Wehrmacht.

The Dirlewanger Sonndercommando were made up of convicts from concentration camps and dregs from the insane asylum. Believe me this is an accurate depiction of how these things happened. You will never see a better war film than this.

My Grandmother was a Partisan Commander on the Odessa Front and fought these bastards.

German soldiers usually had to get pretty drunk to be able to mentally and emotionally sustain the amount of brutality they were about to see and commit upon civilians. I'm sure after spending a day killing people you'd also be pretty unstable, hence the "unprofessional" nature of the massacres. You should read up on history; even regular German police units were used to exterminate civilians in the Eastern Front.

Fact: Khatyn was destroyed by the 118th police battalion which was formed in Kiev and was made up of Mostly Ukrainians and Russians in German uniforms. Grigory Vassiura was the headquarters chief. He was later tried and executed in Belarus in 1986 for the crime. It was an anti partisan action taken out on Belarusian civilians by Russian and Ukrainian men with pleasure. This is just a film.
