  • back then the way things were going the two companies (AT&SF and BN) probably would have gone bankrupt if they hadn't merged together

  • bn and at&sf should have never merged war bonnets were bad ass

  • Comment removed

  • Hats off to the lost but never forgotten railroad; the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe

  • @AVtrainz1998 so thats what the AT in ATSF is...

  • i loved atsf but i love bnsf too, sure atsf was a largely popular railroad way back when but the bnsf is doing very well today,

  • bn an atsf are my favorite railroad of all time but i would have like them to not merge because the bnsf is destroing the legacy of these legends of the railsbeing repainted or scraped atsf will forever be the most beloved railroad of all time.

  • Maybe they should switch back to their old names, and use thier old engines, but still be together

  • @undertakerpitt that would be nice . but they are a buissness for hauling freight, not putting on a show. we were just lucky , that trains looked nicer and sounding better back then.

  • I love the BW89984Fs so much. They should stay with BNSF forever. I hear UP is going to get a few with some Langley horns. Too bad this video is only 3 min long. I could watch this all day. The UP567898s are good too.

  • I love the old silver war bonets and its too bad that all the engines were pached.

  • MAYBE BNSF SHOULD HAVE NEVER MERGED TOGETHER

SO THAT ATSF WOULD STILL HAVE WARBONNETS RUNNING

AND BN COULD DO WHAT THEY WANT I DONT CARE

bnsf should have at least kept both schemes running

  • SAD BOTH WAYS we'll rember the AT&SF & BN

  • If the BN AT&SF merger had not ttaken place we still might have them plus we still might have the UP, Southern Pacific (Denver & Rio Grande Western), and the Chicago North Western. Alot of these mergers took place so the UP cpould stay on top. If it had not taken place there might still be a Southern Pacific operating my favorite route the Tennessee Pass Subdivision as there mainline to Kansas City instead of the UP having it mothballed.

  • I miss the BN Cascade Green much more, why BNSF couldn't keep the green I have no idea.

  • @RichmanJ93

I agree completely. I never liked that silver and red shit. BN was a much better RR than SF.

  • @BNSF2184 Long Live the ATSF

  • What kind of horn is on that NS at 1:58 ?

  • @clinton984

    P5

  • Hey I Got That movie It Was Good.

  • I remember seeing Warbonnets and Bluebonnets hauling trailer trains or fast freights as a kid while watching some train videos, I was hooked, and a few years later I realized that BNSF had formed, it was dissapointing, but I think BNSF is cool for the fact that there are still a lot of old ATSF and BN engines in their respective schemes with a BNSF patch that doesn't look tacky.

  • i thought santa fe was still around

  • @celica825 they still are in the form of a few unpatched dash9's

  • Why cannot it be still be called the Santa Fe

Judy Garlands song will always be remembered. so will the name.

For those who love it, just keep calling it the Santa Fe!

  • funny, the SPSF merger was the merger everyone liked, and it didn't make. the BNSF merger was the merger no one like, but it made it. shit happens, i guess

  • Nice NS horn...

  • b23-7 is the second loco at 1:40. its pretty wierd seeing santa fe diesel's without a BNSF stamped on the side of it

  • I wish Santa FE never merged with Burlington Northern. I miss seeing WarBonnets

  • I dont care about the Santa Fe. I just wish GN and NP never merged with Burlington.

  • @1225dude, they couldn't help it....GN and NP OWNED Burlington.... GN and NP were awesome railroads....some of the roughest terrain of all US railroads.

  • @meccaturbo

    Nah the Q did.

  • @BNSF2184 the Q did what?

  • @meccaturbo

First dieselized passenger train, 2nd rr to start a steam program, most on time freight deliveries, best dinky time schedule, fastest humping, and the list goes on and on

  • @BNSF2184 true, but they still weren't as powerful or as wealthy as the GN or the NP, because those two rr's owned the Q.

  • I still see old Santa Fe units daily on the Chillicothe Subdivision in Illinois on the local freights through here even though they do have BNSF written below the windows and I'll admit have of them could probably use a new paint job.

  • @OakViewFilms agreed

  • @OakViewFilms at least some didn't get totally repainted, they just have a BNSF patch under the loco number. you can still see tem, just with a patch.

  • santa fe bn bnsf has santa fe trains

  • Norfolk Southern!!!!!!!

  • god the horn at 1:20 is so pretty plus does anyone know what kind of engine is the second unit at 1:40?

  • That second engine is an ATSF 8-40b. But Remember If it has 4 wheels per truck it's a 8-40b. otherwise it's a Dash-8 which has 6 wheels per truck. Hoped this helps ;)

  • Sorry! It's a Dash-7

  • I've herd the same type of horn on a Canadian Pacific GP38-2. Twice. Trust me... it's LOUD!!!!!!

  • Wish there was something like this for the SP.

  • there is a final tribute to Tennessee Pass which includes mostly footage on the last year of SP. Its a really good production

  • Today, Union Pacific uses the Marceline Sub with their GEVOs.

  • Unfortunately, what some people don't understand is that the train companies are in it for one thing and one thing only...money. Trains don't exist for railfans, and they don't give a damn what we think. Rail service is a business and only that. That is why there are mergers. I think it sucks just as much as the next person. I didn't become a railfan until long after ATSF and BN had merged, but i can still remember the old Warbonnets as a little kid and thinking they were cool. Oh well.

  • alot of f45's

  • hey anybody,,,Who should be the next big merger? between CSX,,,NS,,,BNSF,,,UP,,KCS,,,CP,,CN ????

  • guess we'll have to wait and see...

  • What would they call it?:P

  • Who should be the next big merger? will now I can see BNSF CN KCS NS all mergeing together. UP CSX will merge and UP will swallow up CSX and CP will be it's own railroad.

  • btw is Conrail still a debate between NS and CSX?

  • I don't know maybe

  • Conrail is split nearly equally between the two. I think CSX got a good deal of the NYC mainline and PRR Panhandle route, NS got the PRR mainline and the rest of the NYC main to Chicago or close to it. That is how the Conrail System was split. I don't think Conrail is a debate any more...

  • KCS & CP ;)

  • Hopefully there won't be the need for anymore mergers. But if they do happen, you can pretty well be sure one thing will stay constant - UP will come out on top, regardless of who merges with who. UP doesn't merge with other railroads, they buy them out. (And not gonna lie, I kinda like it that way. Go UP - America's railroad!).

  • True there really isn't a need for anymore mergers. But the only rumor for us railfans of north america today is that BNSF and UP will one day be the only railroads out.

You should be Thanking UP for merging with SP and buying out CNW and the other fantastic good ol railroads. UP has repainted almost all the old power except for SP and CNW.

Santa fe still exist but getting patched under BNSF. Santa fe 4EVER

We will have to wait and see what happens in the near future...

  • ns and csx will be in the east

  • UP and SP didn't merge. UP bought out sp.

  • @Trainmanalex85

I AGREE TO NO MORE MERGERS! However, any mergers in the future will be "end to end" mergers e.g. "coast to coast." I speculate within 10-15 years there will be 3 Class I's of which none will be based in the US more than likely. These 3 roads will remain for another 10 years before merging into ONE system. My opinion on this 1st stage will be; CSX+NS+CN (+FEC). BNSF+UP+CP. KCS+FXE They will have cryptic names like CANAMEX or NARC (North American Rail Corp) & be government owned.

  • they should all merge to form the U.P.B.N.S.F.N.S.C.S.X.C.P.C.N.K.C.S.M.R.L. Union pacific Burlington Northern Santa Fe Norfolk Southern CSX Canadian Pacific Canadian National Kansas City Southern and Montana Rail Link

  • that would be dumb...no offense.

  • not gonna lie...i agree with you

  • lol, that would be confusing.

  • lol, "Yeah dispatcher this is U.P.B.N.S.F.N.S.C.S.X.C.P.C.N. K.C.S.M.R.L. 218 we're ready to head out Over"

  • In Mexico we had something like you say, and it´s very bad. In order to privatize mexican rails, government merged the NdeM, FCP, CH-P, S-BC and FUS, and as a result of this mega-merger they got the FNM, only for divide and sell later to UP, KCS and other enterprises.

  • i miss the old warbonnet! =(

  • Out of curiosity why did ATSF merge with BN???! Both railroads were just plain awesome separately!!!

  • they merged to gather becouse atsf was in bankrupsee. bn did it becouse the wanted track in southern states but wat i cant figure out is y is wen atsf is bankrupt they get to run the BNSF show no u tell me that

  • Yikes well because of that merger I guess BN rescued ATSF from bankruptcy. Man I am a die hard ATSF fanatic loved it when ATSF and BN were two separate railroads. The BN was just as awesome.

  • Its not the last days of Santa Fe, we all know what the new name is BNSF (BIG NEW SANTA FE) as compared to SPSF (SHOULDN'T PAINT SO FAST) LOL LOL LOL!!!

  • 1:20-1:41 such beautiful melody, that's just rare, I haven't heard a horn like that for a while.

  • I agree sparks1504. They should de-merge! I got hired by BNSF and only worked 3 days before I got "Disqualifed"

    Cheap F**Kers!!!!

  • Corporate beaucracy has done it's best to destroy historic railroads, bur gues what? They failed miserably when it came to us railfans and train lovers. Like you guys,I have my videos and photos, and i dare them to try to take that away from us!!!!!

  • now there union pacfic.

  • Does anybody have a countdown video for the Southern Pacific merger???????

  • ATSF was better... BNSF cause a lot of accidents no judging...

  • they should de-merge this crap....Santa Fe forever!!!!!!!

  • I hate Burlington Northern. ATSF seemed alot richer. How did they get taken over?

  • Burlington northern is fine but i lkked it better whenit was santa fe

  • Santa Fe: Gone but never, never forgotten.

  • @SeniorMinch229018 I agree. The spirit of the famed Santa Fe Railway still lives on in the great warbonnet paint schemes, the Grand Canyon Railway, their beloved steam engine #3751, and many other pre-owned locomotives from the AT&SF.

  • @SeniorMinch229018 Yes, the memory of Warbonnets and Bluebonnets will likely be around for many years to come, if not for ever. Maybe BNSF will do some Heritage Schemes for both the BN and AT&SF?

  • i say forget burlington northern it should just be ATSF

  • i know

  • Call the US Railroad Department and force them to make the Santa Fe come back!!!

  • I LUV THE ATSF!!! as a matter of fact, my birthday in 1995 (Sept. 22) was the day that the ATSF came together with the BN as the merger was finalized!

  • So SPGP60, and your 19?

    so your realy 12

  • uhhh no my birthday year is 1989 i was just saying that the day, September 22nd, was the what was cool about it.

  • So you're 12?

  • y did they ever get rid of santa fe i loved thoes trains

  • whats a Merger?

  • A merger is something that is combined with another thing.

  • hickler90 that is not entirely true.BNSF still operates dozens of locomotives that are still wearing santa fe lettering and santa fe paint.

  • It's you, pentrex! it's really you guys. how did you guys get on youtube. you've never even commented your account or your videos here on youtube. does your narrator own this account?

  • Love the video, and the classic power, just wish the angles on some of the scenes was shot properly instead of nose-diving as I call em, regardless, you won't be disappointed!

  • I was in one of the first dispatch classes after the merger. The only people they didn't flunk out were railroad people. My class was made up of college degreed people with transportation experience. Our teachers were two high school educated BN'ers whose dads got them jobs out of highschool. All of us with degrees magically flunked for one reason or another. That's railroading.

  • haha lol thats kind of funny.....i mean its not sorry to hear that but you have to understand something about the railroad...and thzat is we are a loyal band of brothers.....and sisters and i guess yeah maybe they do provide favoritism to the railroad employees......go us!!! im hoping you did get the job later???

  • I have this video (on DVD with the sister movie Across The Heartland) which basicly takes you from Chicago to Kansas City.

  • Hey....they called NS a competitor..as a railroad employee ( Engineeer..NS Va.Division/Norfolk Terminal) they only competitor in the transportation game is the trucking industry. Railroaders all across the country are in the same game. To my fellow RR workers stay safe..!!

  • Galesburg IL was the precursor. the Santa Fe line from Fort Madison thru Galesburg to Chicago. and of course the Illinois Division HQ for the Burlington Northern, as well as about 2-3 yards.

I'll always miss the big Green EMDs floating across northern Illinois, the big horns cutting through the SNOW and the COLD.

  • By Bye F45 :(

  • At least we still have some lines other than Amtrak and Conrail.

  • conrail is CSX, and NS now. its only a small switching division now.

  • Good stuff. I added this to my favorites just for the footage of the NS C39-8.

  • was SF loosing money? reason for merger

  • Hostal takeover :(

BN took over ATSF kept the sf DUE To its rich history

  • i miss those green engines but the orange and black is kinda cool

  • they still say santa fe and BN

  • Yeah but most of those engines, are either tagged by BNSF or else the older power is now gone.

  • I've seen this video. I recommend it for any Red Warbonnet fan!

  • It's nice to have the train video professionals post their previews here. Excellent!

  • Another Pentrex classic!

This video documents the final days of my favorite railroad, the Santa Fe.
