When you don't stay in one place all the time, you don't need to plant crops. Therefore the infertility of the land was not a problem. The character of the land hasn't changed, but the density of the population and also their political freedom HAS changed. Hope this helps.

A lot of the places that are deserts now used to be fertile soil, my point is figure out how to reverse that process and use it as research for teraforming other planets which will also start out as inhospitable. I guess the problem isn't with food production though, it is all about food transport and since africa has been raped of it's natural resources they don't really have much to barter with.
