Larry Holmes is THE most underrated fighter in history! He fought at a time when their weren't a lot of exciting prospects and the spotlight was on the Welter and Middleweight divisions. Holmes would have schooled most of the so called "Greats".
i dont why some fools keep bigging up modern heavywieghts hieghts, like the klicthko sisters r giants or something, gerry cooney is 6 ft 6 the same as vladmir klicthko, yet within the ring against a 6ft 4 holmes theres barely a diffrence, with all the wieght and age factor both george foreman and larry holmes have shrunk n inch or two and ali probally 3 inches becuase of parkisnsons, even outta there primes the 70s boxers would piss all over the big bags of shit we have these days
This announcer, not Ray, wasn't watching the same fight as I with his Cooney bias. Anyway, in order to clarify any doubt on Larry Holmes' greatness, I submit the following:
Larry Holmes' left jab, who is said to be considered one of the greatest weapons in the history of sports, was the WBC Heavyweight Champion from 1978 to 1983, The Ring Heavyweight Champion from 1980 to 1985, and the IBF Heavyweight Champion from 1983 to 1985. His twenty successful title defenses are second to only to Joe Lo
@pokeyinla Ya racist times, all odds were against Holmes then because of racial reasons, even the president, Regan put a phone in Cooney's room so he can give him a class if he wins. But Holmes won deservedly.
@pokeyinla That may be a fair comment, but in defense of Cooney he was used. The racial angle was orchestrated by Don King as much as anybody, and Cooney was no fan of it. And let's not forget- Cooney had only fought a total of 6 rounds in nearly 3 years previous. He had less than 12 rounds of experience against name fighters. He says himself he wanted more quality fights. His management was too concerned with a Great White Hope payday.
OMG every single of one you idiots are the same on EVERY boxing video!!! "oh but his legacy was so much better, oh all he fought was bums, he's overrated, he's a club fighter, his chin was weak, ____ would've beat ____ if he was in his prime, he fought like a pussy and all he did was slap" YOU FUCKING DOUCHE BAGS TALK SHIT ABOUT THESE GREAT WARRIORS AND WHY? HUH? YOUR NAME WILL NOT BE REMEMBERED AND THEIR'S WILL. HAVE SOME RESPECT
jerry seriously needed a better jab, rather than throwing left hooks all the time..guys who depend on their jab HATE fighting opponents who can jab, look at ali v norton, and look at all the jabs cooper put in ali's face b4 he got cut up and stopped
"By the way, Holmes was officially down against Shavers II in round 7 and Snipes in 7!"
Wow - you're good. I remember the Shavers fight now but not Snipes. Time to look that one up :) btw - did u ever c the video "champions forever"? Came out over 20 yrs ago but it covers all the 70's guys thru Larry Holmes - with interviews. It was great.
you people kill me not in larry holmes league? haha lol whatever if he would of fought his style i say he would of won instead of trying to slug it out but comeon with not in his league crap gerry was a great fighter he lost this fight but still a great boxer
I knew Holmes would crush this guy. Bunch of my friends here on Long Island (where Cooney lived) thought he could win. Never. Not in the same league as Larry Holmes.
Not only was Larry one of the best but he's a savy businessman and gentleman. And he and Cooney are good friends to this day. Cooney asked Holmes to help him with his finances and investments, without which, Cooney would probably be broke long ago. They're are both 2 gents I've love to sit down with for a beer and talk shop.
@LeCutter I think the two guys were puppets in that racial hype during their fight in 1982. I do not think Cooney was prejudice. Just the media and some of the guys who supported him. Holmes is my favorite atthlete ever. Holmes picked Cooney to be champion after him in his book. I am glad they have a good relationship.
Between 78 and 85 Holmes defended the title 20 times and 15 of those twenty were ranked in the top ten by Ring magazine. He fought and beat several men who went on to win versions of the title (Weaver, Berbick and Witherspoon). If you compare the fighters Holmes fought with those Dempsey, Tunney and Louis fought, I would say Holmes fought tougher opposition. And don't forget he fought Tyson and Holyfield at their peaks.
@runtinsweet The problem in judging holmes is,he had great skills, great jab, great heart.Problem is,he never unified the titles because he ducked top ranked contenders.I think holmes would have beaten page, dokes, tate, thomas, coetzee and tubbs.BUT,he ducked them to fight bums in cobb, evangilista, occasio, scott frank, ledoux and the spinks that sucked. Then,he gets his ass absolutely kicked by a lightheavyweight(the spinks that didn't suck). All the while claiming he won while wearing sunglasses.
@TheGatorfan93 You are wrong. Holmes fought the top contender (you mean he didn't fight every contender). And Holmes tried to unify the titles against Coetzee, but the PROMOTER MESSED UP THE FINANCES AND A JUDGE ENDED UP SHOOTING THE FIGHT DOWN. When Holmes fought Evangelista, Evangelista was European champ. Pinklon Thomas had about 2 fights in 1978. So Holmes should have fought 2-0 Thomas instead of the European champ who lost to the previous champ by decision in Ali?
@TheGatorfan93 There is no problem judging Holmes career. How can you criticize Holmes for fighting bums when Greg Page fought Evangelista (who you called a bum) Dokes drew against Ocasio in their first fight (who you called a bum), Dokes won a close decison against Cobb (who you called a bum)? So since Dokes and Page fought these guys then that makes them bums too!
@TheGatorfan93 You keep saying Holmes ducked these guys. I already proven to you Holmes was slated to fight Tate and Coetzee, but the PROMOTER messed up the fight. This is documented. How can I get thisd through to you? Also on the Page issue, Holmes received more money to fight and undefeated Frazier than he was going to get fighting a Page who messed up his marketability by losing to Holmes' "BUM", Berbick.
@TheGatorfan93 You failed to mention how Holmes defeated the guys who defeated the majority of your top contenders. For example: Holmes defeated Berbick and Bey who defeated Page. Holmes defeated Weaver and Berbick who defeated Tate. Holmes defeated Berbick who defeated Pinklon Thomas. Holmes defeated Witherspoon who defeated the Great Greg Page. Holmes defeated Witherspoon who defeated Tubbs. Holmes defeated Wevaer who defeated Coetzee. Holmes did better against Dokes common opps.
@TheGatorfan93 So based on the facts I provided, it seems like Berbick name came up the most times. Berbick defeated your top contenders Tate, Thomas, and Page. Witherspoon defeated your top contenders Page and Tubbs. Weaver defeated your top contenders Tate and Coetzee. With the exception of Dokes, all of these guys lost to BUMS Larry Holmes had picked from the Salvation Army. Let me ask you this question...
@TheGatorfan93 Why did your top contender Pinklon Thomas ducked top rank contender Tony Tucker to fight Larry Holmes bums Weaver and Berbick? Why was your top contender Greg Page given a title shot after losing to Bey and Witherspoon? Page's ko of Coetzee is questionable because the round Page ko Coetzee was extended. Where was the rematch? Why didn't Tony Tubbs defend against his clone Tony Tucker> They came out around the same time? What about Dokes vs Page in 1983?
@76WestSports Fair enough.I was just trying to say holmes doesn't have more talented top contenders on his resume, therefore its hard to judge his legacy. We have to judge him on his wins.If you look at his top wins. Its a well past his prime norton,a prime cooney, tim witherspoon. Then (granted, past prime a bit himself) gets EMBARRASSED by spinks, then gets beat again by him.Again,i think holmes was great, but his resume makes it hard to tell how great he was. That's all ive been trying to say
To LordTariq83 Shavers never beat Ali maybe in his dreams...... Berbik beat Ali that was Ali's last fight as for Norton yes first time he did beat Ali second no way and third was very even and you cannot win a world championship with ""even""Remember you said in their prime well Ali's prime was taken away by the govt for 3+ years no one would have disturbed Ali in his prime that is why we call him the greatest.
I heard Cooney had a trainer that threw him under the bus on this fight by telling him to not use his best weapon, left something or another. Holmes was a great fighter so it likely wouldn't have mattered, but still.......
Holmes got in to great shape for this fight as No black guy liked the thought of a white guy beating him , Holmes is my favourite heavy weight fighter and in my opinium the best heavy of all time , great left jab , good right , uppercut and left hook with a fantasdtic chin .
I think if you could let all the fighters fight each other @ their peak in a league type affair then I think holmes would have the most points @ the end of the season , having said that , a young Foreman with the old Foremans head may of ended up as top dog - my opinium thats all but Ali was way over rated , with a lot of pundits thinking that ,shavers , young , norton and berbick all beat him as well as spinks and Larry .
@LordTariq83 I agree. Larry Holmes never got the credit for being as great as he was. 20 title defenses (second only to Joe Louis 25). And most his defenses weren't even close fights. He was a victim of being not that well liked, not a fast talker and came after Ali and before Tyson. But for pure skills and fighting, few champions were better and for those who knock his competition, it was a lot better than Tyson who lost to most of the real good fighters of his era (Holyfield, Lennox)
@aitraining Exactly. It's not what Holmes did in the ring, but his corny and dull personality. His bad grammar. If Holmes was that bad then why didn't he failo a drug test? The media really ruined his image especially after the Cooney and Ali fights. Then Larry let the media get to him with the MArciano thing.
@76WestSports Yes - the media really taunted him with the Marciano record and Larry defintely came off too defiant and worded his self defense poorly. "...couldn't carry my jock" line was not good. BUT, I would take the Easton Assasin in his 1980-ish prime vs. Marciano personally :) Holmes had the best Jab I ever saw and it seemed like he never got hurt while he was champion. Was he ever knocked down when he was champion? I don't remember it.
@aitraining I agree. Holmes was very impulsive. He was the anti-McNabb. Donovan McNabb has kept his composure with the media. The constant interviews of people saying Marciano would have tkoed him just struck a nerve and when Peter Marciano said he wanted Spinks to win and did not want Holmes to tie the record, that made Holmes explode! Years later the Marciano family gave Holmes the Maricnao award. By the way, Holmes was officially down against Shavers II in round 7 and Snipes in 7!
Holme did'nt just get knocked down, he got decked. as in walloped. Never really one of my favorites, but you have got to handed to him. The heart he showed after getting up from the canvas was more than admirable. Later, waaaay pas his prime. He also got up from a Mike Tyson bomb.
@Trenttf1 No, people don't like Holmes because he is an ass. I liked him, though. Very underrated and a lot of heart. Not the greatest chin, but he always got up and won.
cooney had very little defensive skills---and when he got hit hard he didnt know what to do like holding on the arms, head bobbing, etc=a slugger with a good left hook and not much more
Gerry had a easy road to title. Ken Norton 39, Ron Lyle used up and Jimmy Young at the end of career. This hurt Gerry when he stepped up to the great Larry Holmes..Gerry thought he could win it because Larry was 32..Larry= Lord of the Rings....
@BunBRIP No jerk, I'm not gay, are you? Norton was 35 when he fought Holmes dumbass , what did he do jump in a time machine and go back in time to fight Cooney idiot?
You seem to understand Heavyweight Boxing. I'm a huge fan of Larry Holmes and consider him one of the Top 3-5 Heavyweights off all time. Who didn't get his due respect because he was part of Muhammad Ali's generation.
Lookat some old fight films which are on here of Jersey Joe Walcott. I defy anyone to say Larry Holmes didn't copy that style. Check out the back up and step in uppercut of Jersey Joe and his punch and walk away move.
@loyaldude10 .But what about Lyle ,Tirell, Forman, Williams...they were all huge and Ali knocked them out Tirell went the distance however Ali beat him up bad..what about Joe Buchner He was very big and Ali beat him twice easy....
@bigmace1000 --I hear you. But Holes' style was similar to Ali's (they used to be sparring partners). Holmes had a quick jab, not a very good KO puncher in my opinion, but knew how to use the ring very effectively. Ron Lyle did give Ali trouble for most of the fight, Williams was washed upwhen Ali got him, Bugner was slow, and we know what happened with Foreman--- but remember Ali did take some heavy body blows from George
@loyaldude10 You make some good points and I always wondered why Bugner did not do better as a fighter..so are you saying that speed was Bugner main problem?? Was he known for being slow?? However I do not really share your view on Lyle..Lyle did not give Ali much trouble ..it`s true Lyle did not fall in to Ali game plan or trap, however Lyle was not doing much in the fight..bit of a boring fight as i re-call...I still think a young Ali in late 1966 would have beat Cooney and Holmes
@bigmace1000 ---no question the Ali of 1966 beats either of these guys, and would beat Cooney soundly. I think the Ali of 66-67 (and just imagine what he would have been like in 68-69) would have beaten anyone.
@loyaldude10 I agree man, that dude was nasty right before he went away and I think he would have hit his true peak in 68-69. The greatness shined through though and it just goes to show how good he was that he could accomplish all that afterwards.
@loyaldude10 It's a damn shame that we never got to see Ali in his prime. He was like 25 when he was stripped of his title and was 29 when he began his comeback. So his peak years 25-28 were essentislly wasted.
i have to admit, even at the time i thot this was, mostly,a dull jabbing contest, and it looks even more like that now, with little flurries of action..too bad gerry cudnt figure out it might be a good idea to try to cut off the ring and get holmes on ropes..just followed him around all night like a dummy
alright pal that's it anybody who's anybody knew it was no rape the girl went up to his room in the middle of the night what the fuck she expected playing chess she was all for it tyson is a man who admitted to his mistake gave douglas crtedit for kod him and apologize to holyfield for losinfg his cool and sportsmanship if you think that was a rape you obviousqly don't know the girl's past she accused a college guy of rape too only with tyson she was thinking big time money just know the facts
well easy to judge a man without having to walk in his shoes the same way people pegged tyson as a scumbag for all these years when he has a more heart and determination and will power than most guys on earth and at least he admitted that he can be a jerk and personnaly i know enhancer users are not right but like i said we don't know half the shit these guys go throught toi stay on top so i don't approve but i don't lash at them either
At page 176 of the chapter entitled Ray Arcel Rag in Sal Marchiano's book Sal details Ray's admission of the use of amyl nitrate to save Larry's title after the 10th round. Eddie Brown helped with this towel trick in the corner. The video of the 10th round disappeared from this site. The towel trick was showed by Howard Cosell on national TV. Just another example of the modern athlete using banned substances to excel.
cooney never had a shot against holmes not in a millions years holmes had endurance good chin good hand speed he was one of he greatest cooney only had power holmes totally schooled cooney that night in fact cooney was finished as a fighter after that foreman made mincemeat of him within 6minutes the holmes cooney fight was more about race than it was about talent but still conney is a great guy i think that's why people got behind him that and when he kod kenny norton
@rickyrecon45 yeah it's funny how people always come up with excuses when their fighters lose a fight but when they win it's because they re great truth is cooney wasn't champion material lots of great fighters couldn't beat holmes even past his prime like ray mercer shavers couldn't get him either nor even berbick and cooney is not nearly as good as those guys just look at the fight and you'll see who the best man was
@MrIronval The issue was the use of banned performance enhancers number one which if discovered at the time would have resulted in the stripping of his title and two the use these substances at a time when Cooney was winning the fight. The other guy breaking the law and cheating with performance enhancers is not an excuse but IS a fact. Another FASCT is Holmes was using when his corner resorted to sniffers to wake him up. So I suppose you cosign the drug use?
@rickyrecon45 those are just allegations and some fighters were using roids and other stuff for years like brains out toney or tommy morrison and about holmes they just said that because people din't like him even if he was using he wouldn't be the first one nor the last one plus no one can tell if he was using or not those are just rumours been beatean for the heavyweight title is a hard pill to swallow but being a sore loser is even worst accept it like a man would make people remember you
@MrIronval Pssst! Ray Arcel admitted the use of amyl nitrate. Films confirmed it in a TV special with Howard Cosel. Sal Marchiano confirmed it through Ray Arcel. Angelo Dundee confirmed it. Not an allegation my friend, FACT.
@rickyrecon45 whatever man i don't see why people get so upset about fighters using these it's physically impossible to stay on top without a little help especially past one prime i think the reason why they using is whern they come to realise that the only thing they good at would slip through teir fingers if they don't make that decision imean honestly my friend what would you do in their place lose it all or take the risk?EASY TO JUDGE FROM WHERE WE STAND but how about if we were inthat place
Ali was more than a match for Foreman, think fighting styles. Ali never ducked a fighter in his life, but for the sake of the loser George, we're supposed to agree?
Angelo Dundee and Sal Marchiano in their respective books revealed how Eddie Brown and Ray Arcel slipped amyl nitrate to Larry to save his title. They call it cheating and drug enhancement.
Angelo Dundee and Sal Marchiano revealed in their two books that Holems was woken up amyl nitrate after the 10th round thus cheating to keep his title. The video of round 10 and my comments bringing this out as well as other people's comments uncovering the doping was erased. Seems the truth upsets somebody.
@segamania0986 you know when shavers knocked the crap out of holmes I can actually picture tyson beating holmes, but tyson has to get around the that amazing jab of holmes, incredibly accurate!
@LastWhiteRhino you know i am referring to a holmes at his best.not that disaster of a fight they had.they should do a fantasy style fight show (similar to ali/marciano) .that i would love to watch.i mean compared to all the "great " show they have today!...please!!
Gerry Cooney punched hard with one hand. He had smart management; they got him a title shot against Holmes without Cooney having beaten a decent fighter in their prime. Holmes had a tendency to put his foot in his mouth, but it wasn't him who made it about race. Blame that on the media, Promoter Don King, and people dying for the first white heavyweight champion since the 1950s. Holmes just spoke the truth about it. I don't blame Cooney. He just got in the ring and did the best he could.
@whosayswho I wouldn't argue that but you know that Wladimir improved to what he is today because of the work he has done with a black man, Emanuel Steward. I believe that he is at a different level now because of Steward.
Man, Cooney could throw that left hand fast. He was smart, sometimes he would just lob it in there a couple times just to make you think it wasn't too fast, then BAM, out you go. Except this time of course.
For those of you who say NASTY comments about COONEY for LOSEING !
ALL the prior LEGENDS HAVE LOST fights and - I mean ALL of the GREATS - yet for some reason many here single out FIGHTERS like cooney and make SNIDE REMARKS - because you are brainwashed SHEEP i guess.
@Tex200950 What's worse, is so many people will argue over who's great and who isn't when they probably haven't seen more than one or two fights from the people their arguing about.
SHUT UP - Whites are genetically made for inventing things / SMART not fighting its called evolution. DONT EVER CALL MY ppl WHITE BOY AGAIN and I WONT use the n word OK - bastur@s.
@whosayswho You idiot there arent any good black heavyweight fighters out period for the Klitschko brothers to prove that. Lennox Lewis destroyed Vitali, get over it...black and mexican fighters are superior.
If David Bey is mixed race then it means Larry was telling the truth. Larry knocked Cooney down, then after Larry beat him up. Who stopped the fight ? WHO STOPPED THE FIGHT DAM IT ! lol... Was it Larry ? And yes , the white folks MADE it a race issue even down to the biased ring introduction. Larry still BATTERED him. lol...
if wish folks would leave "race" (a better term is culture) out these discussions (i know its a part of life) still BOTH these men were great fighters (holmes i think was the better of the two) however, this was a great fight between two boxers that was overshadowed by the racial hype crap of don king which ABC sadly bought into (i think) cooney had all the tools (height, reach, power, a southpaw) to be the champ but holmes was the better boxer.
Foreman got away with all illegal foul punches. A crime to Boxing that the officials never disqualified him in boxing matches from when he even first boxed.
In my book the greatest Heavyweight of all time was George Foreman even if he lost against Ali in Zaire because Ali has never REALLY wanted a rematch . Otherwise the most IMPORTANT rematch of story ever took place .
@frank581949 People try and say Ali ducked George for the rematch. But fact is Ali DID agree to the rematch. George fought and lost to Jimmy Young and therefore Young got the fight instead. George retired.
@bandit7498 ,Please not talk to me this bullshit Jimmy Young its mean anything other Foreman was exhausted from his fight against Ron Lyle end of that story .The true fact in my opinion is Ali has handled and scheming for not giving the REMATCH within normal time or some weeks after the fight in Zaire .Why Ali has long drag this REMATCH ? Its easy to understand Ali had FEAR of Foreman no other explanation is acceptable as simple as that . The GREATEST of all time is George Foreman .
@rickyrecon45 ,Very easy to say if there was a REMATCH Ali would have knocked Foreman ..But in FACT Ali refused REMATCH in normal times to Foreman .This proves Ali greatly feared Foreman . Ali has not even been able to win against Joe Frazier , Ken Norton , even the little SPINK was not even a real heavy weight Ali lost all these boxers have been gentleman enough to give Ali a REMATCH. Why Ali has not done the same thing for Foreman??The whole question is there ! Greatest of all Foreman !
@frank581949 --Foreman may have been one of the greatest punchers, but come on---he had weaknesses that good fighterscouldexploit---no 1, his gross lack of endurance; slow hands another one. He didnt always know how to handle himself in ring too well when he didnt KO opponent---Ali, Jimmy Young fights are examples.
@loyaldude10 ,If I follow your reasoning Ali is not been better since he lost against a very weak heavyweight Leon Spink ..... Lost against Joe Frazier, Ken Norton ...... But the only difference between her three boxers they give REMATCH to Ali ...... But him Ali has denied the REMATCH to Foreman immediately after the fight in Zaire .That is one of many issues among many other makes me say that Foreman was the greatest of all time . End of discussion BYE !
@frank581949 STOOP DREAMING. I loved foreman but a much older ALI beat Foreman in his PRIME. Theres really no comparison. It was a CLEAR FINISH, no need to rehash with another shot. So instead of fighting Ali, Foreman moved on. A few years later, a relative unknown Lyle smacked the shit out of Foreman instead.
@depper ,,,,,I disagree with you. Firstly Foreman won his fight against Lyle . So before you say stupid things inform you correctly . Secondly in my humble opinion Foreman has been at any point of view superior than Ali because Ali had refused to give Foreman a REMATCH . Thirdly I like better Foreman because Foreman is a fighter attacking so offensive .. unlike Ali who is on the defensive especially against the big slugger and Ali could count on the judges who favored Ali 99.9% of the time
@frank581949 thats where your wrong, fair dues ali didnt exactly jump at the chance to give foreman a rematch considering he took alot of damage in their fight, especially internally, kidneys etc........BUT the winner of jimmy young v foreman was ment to fight ali, unfortunately foreman lost that fight and ali put on a terrible show against young, reason being is i think ali purposely put on alot of weight to anticipate the foreman fight and was just plannin on rope-a-dopein again.......meh
@frank581949 thank god a few peeps see ali was overrated,any1 think ali better, just imagine doug jones or henry cooper giving 4man a hard time like he did ali
@frank581949 ----fact that Ali didnt give him rematch doesnt mean Foreman was superior. George looked bad in Ali fight. Was throwing wild amateurish punches towards end that lacked power. Ali may not have wanted to train hard again for a rematch; or maybe public wasnt clamoring for a rematch. Rumors are that Foreman ducked Jerry Quarry; doesnt mean George wouldnt have KO'd him (he would have, or stopped him on cuts); just means he didnt want to risk it, if he could get title shot without it.
@loyaldude10 So true many skilled and quick boxers would defeat Foreman in the ring. Larry Holmes would outsmart and outbox Foreman in the ring eventually ko'ing him. However in a street fight without rules and regulations Foreman would kill Holmes in heartbeat if he could catch him. The same goes for Ali, young and even Holyfield in the ring they will always beat foreman in the ring but in a streetfight it would be lights out for them.
@rickyrecon45 , And this is not all many rematch Ali win Ali have preferential treatment by the judges if Ali dont have favor of judges Ali would have lost . Foreman has never been favored by judges when Foreman won the first battle very easy against Joe Frazier and in the REMATCH Foreman has given to Frazier Foreman still win easily because Frazier had to give up before the end because if Frazier would continue Foreman would have to pass the KO . Foreman is the greatest of all time
@rickyrecon45 ,When Foreman lost against Jimmy Young he was exhausted from his fight against Ron Lyle. Ali has lost against the very small Heavyweight Spink and the REMATCH against Spink battle seemed decide beforehand . Many fight Ali won Ali had the favor of judges .And what proves to me above all Foreman been higher to Ali its the FACT Ali did not give Foreman the REMATCH of CENTURY Ali had FEAR of Foreman . Let Justice foreman and recognize FOREMAN the GREATEST OF ALL TIME !
@frank581949 ---Foreman-Lyle fight was in 1976; George fought Young in 1977. Hey I know Foreman's endurance was horrible, but even he couldnt have been that tired 1 yr later. Young exploited his weaknesses and was too clever (even though not a particularly good fighter). If George didnt KO opponent, he was in trouble. A guy who only held title a 1/1/2 yrs cant be the greatest. Ali was finished when he fought Spinks, he just didnt want to quit.
@loyaldude10,You have your opinion on this matter.. .I have mine!! I saw the fight Young / Foreman in my opinion Foreman deserved to win but the judges have never been favorable Foreman. Unlike Ali, who has fully deserved to lose but the judges and the boxing federation gave preferential treatment to Ali as in the third rematch Ali / Norton Ali had clearly lost that fight .I respect you prefers Ali . But I prefer Foreman especially Foreman has suffered some injustice !!
@frank581949 Ali did deserve to lose 3d Norton fight. He was 34 at time, and should have retired. Joe Louis got preferential treatment from judges towards end of his career. Foreman looked bad against Young---u r the 1st person I've heard that thinks Foreman won. There was no injustice. Young was just very clever and Foreman couldnt handle his style.
Gerry boxed to prove he could go the distance and was a complete fighter to all his critics. If he would have fought his fight he probably would've taken Holmes out. All in all, he did one helluva job boxing Holmes.
@jermaine550 Two esteemed boxing authorities, Angelo Dundee and Sal Marchiano attribute Holmes win to his use of banned substances yet you still persist in... what.."Cooney would have lost anyway"? Even Howard Cosell did a TV special about the famous 10th round when Cooney beat up Holmes then came back in 11th strong after he got another shot of amyl nitrate. Cooney reformed himself from an alcohol problem in 88. Holmes still goes around saying things like Ali couldn't hit.
@liveshowgrlz ---I dont know why u think Cooney was trying to prove he could go the distance.. His strength was his KO power---no secret there. Holmes just had him on experience and command of the ring. (as well as endurance)
@loyaldude10 I believe Cooney actually said he was trying to prove he wasn't just an early knockout artist and wanted to prove he could go the distance.
@bptaylor11 --we all know fighters say things after losing a fight to excuse the loss. I remember Ali saying, after 1st Frazier fight, that he employed the rope - a dope tactic because he wanted to show that he stand there and take Frazier's best blows. Real reason of course is that he only boxed 18 rds in past 3 1/2 yrs. He had to hope Joe would punch himself out. You go with your strength-Cooney may have paced himself somewhat, but he was trying to win not prove something
@scorzeny45 I loved how some whites say Blacks cant complain because they have a black president. Having one black president doesn't mean racism ended, in fact if anything, it proved its alive and well. And having one Black President doesn't make it "equal". Equal is 50/50! In case you've forgot. 1 out of 43 aint even. Thats actually extremely racist.
Of course more white people commit violent crimes-because there are more white people. Per capita?? not even close. Black people are committing far more violent crimes, regardless of who gets sent to the big house and who doesn't. Not racist, just true.
racist? BLACKS ARE 12 PERCENT OF THE POP. AND COMMITT OVER 70 PERCENT OF THE VIOLENT CRIME IN AMERICA,. obama got over 95 percent of the black vote and im not allowed to say thats racist ?GIVE ME A BREAK. you guys cant pull the race card anymore, you got your black president, your black attorney general, etc, stop your complaining .
Larry Holmes is THE most underrated fighter in history! He fought at a time when their weren't a lot of exciting prospects and the spotlight was on the Welter and Middleweight divisions. Holmes would have schooled most of the so called "Greats".

His twenty successful title defenses are second to only to Joe Lo
pokeyinla 5 months ago 6
@pokeyinla Ya racist times, all odds were against Holmes then because of racial reasons, even the president, Regan put a phone in Cooney's room so he can give him a class if he wins. But Holmes won deservedly.
waiting4smtin 5 months ago
@pokeyinla That may be a fair comment, but in defense of Cooney he was used. The racial angle was orchestrated by Don King as much as anybody, and Cooney was no fan of it. And let's not forget- Cooney had only fought a total of 6 rounds in nearly 3 years previous. He had less than 12 rounds of experience against name fighters. He says himself he wanted more quality fights. His management was too concerned with a Great White Hope payday.

I knew Holmes would crush this guy. Bunch of my friends here on Long Island (where Cooney lived) thought he could win. Never. Not in the same league as Larry Holmes.
aitraining 10 months ago
@aitraining Had Cooney won this fight, Long Island would have been renamed Cooney Island.
76WestSports 10 months ago
Not only was Larry one of the best but he's a savy businessman and gentleman. And he and Cooney are good friends to this day. Cooney asked Holmes to help him with his finances and investments, without which, Cooney would probably be broke long ago. They're are both 2 gents I've love to sit down with for a beer and talk shop.
LeCutter 10 months ago
@LeCutter I think the two guys were puppets in that racial hype during their fight in 1982. I do not think Cooney was prejudice. Just the media and some of the guys who supported him. Holmes is my favorite atthlete ever. Holmes picked Cooney to be champion after him in his book. I am glad they have a good relationship.
76WestSports 10 months ago
Between 78 and 85 Holmes defended the title 20 times and 15 of those twenty were ranked in the top ten by Ring magazine. He fought and beat several men who went on to win versions of the title (Weaver, Berbick and Witherspoon). If you compare the fighters Holmes fought with those Dempsey, Tunney and Louis fought, I would say Holmes fought tougher opposition. And don't forget he fought Tyson and Holyfield at their peaks.
jaa1407 10 months ago
@jaa1407 Thank you for making that point!
76WestSports 10 months ago
Holmes didn't beat anyone, the end.
runtinsweet 10 months ago
@runtinsweet The problem in judging holmes is,he had great skills, great jab, great heart.Problem is,he never unified the titles because he ducked top ranked contenders.I think holmes would have beaten page, dokes, tate, thomas, coetzee and tubbs.BUT,he ducked them to fight bums in cobb, evangilista, occasio, scott frank, ledoux and the spinks that sucked. Then,he gets his ass absolutely kicked by a lightheavyweight(the spinks that didn't suck). All the while claiming he won while wearing sunglasses.
TheGatorfan93 10 months ago
@TheGatorfan93 You are wrong. Holmes fought the top contender (you mean he didn't fight every contender). And Holmes tried to unify the titles against Coetzee, but the PROMOTER MESSED UP THE FINANCES AND A JUDGE ENDED UP SHOOTING THE FIGHT DOWN. When Holmes fought Evangelista, Evangelista was European champ. Pinklon Thomas had about 2 fights in 1978. So Holmes should have fought 2-0 Thomas instead of the European champ who lost to the previous champ by decision in Ali?
76WestSports 10 months ago
@TheGatorfan93 There is no problem judging Holmes career. How can you criticize Holmes for fighting bums when Greg Page fought Evangelista (who you called a bum) Dokes drew against Ocasio in their first fight (who you called a bum), Dokes won a close decison against Cobb (who you called a bum)? So since Dokes and Page fought these guys then that makes them bums too!
76WestSports 10 months ago
@TheGatorfan93 You keep saying Holmes ducked these guys. I already proven to you Holmes was slated to fight Tate and Coetzee, but the PROMOTER messed up the fight. This is documented. How can I get thisd through to you? Also on the Page issue, Holmes received more money to fight and undefeated Frazier than he was going to get fighting a Page who messed up his marketability by losing to Holmes' "BUM", Berbick.
76WestSports 10 months ago
76WestSports 10 months ago
@TheGatorfan93 So based on the facts I provided, it seems like Berbick name came up the most times. Berbick defeated your top contenders Tate, Thomas, and Page. Witherspoon defeated your top contenders Page and Tubbs. Weaver defeated your top contenders Tate and Coetzee. With the exception of Dokes, all of these guys lost to BUMS Larry Holmes had picked from the Salvation Army. Let me ask you this question...
76WestSports 10 months ago
@TheGatorfan93 Why did your top contender Pinklon Thomas ducked top rank contender Tony Tucker to fight Larry Holmes bums Weaver and Berbick? Why was your top contender Greg Page given a title shot after losing to Bey and Witherspoon? Page's ko of Coetzee is questionable because the round Page ko Coetzee was extended. Where was the rematch? Why didn't Tony Tubbs defend against his clone Tony Tucker> They came out around the same time? What about Dokes vs Page in 1983?
76WestSports 10 months ago

Holmes got in to great shape for this fight as No black guy liked the thought of a white guy beating him , Holmes is my favourite heavy weight fighter and in my opinium the best heavy of all time , great left jab , good right , uppercut and left hook with a fantasdtic chin .
nobbytang 11 months ago 2
@nobbytang i wouldnt cal holmes greatest heavyweight champ of all time......but he is deff in the top 5
LordTariq83 11 months ago 2
@LordTariq83
I think if you could let all the fighters fight each other @ their peak in a league type affair then I think holmes would have the most points @ the end of the season , having said that , a young Foreman with the old Foremans head may of ended up as top dog - my opinium thats all but Ali was way over rated , with a lot of pundits thinking that ,shavers , young , norton and berbick all beat him as well as spinks and Larry .
nobbytang 11 months ago
@LordTariq83 I agree. Larry Holmes never got the credit for being as great as he was. 20 title defenses (second only to Joe Louis 25). And most his defenses weren't even close fights. He was a victim of being not that well liked, not a fast talker and came after Ali and before Tyson. But for pure skills and fighting, few champions were better and for those who knock his competition, it was a lot better than Tyson who lost to most of the real good fighters of his era (Holyfield, Lennox)
aitraining 10 months ago 2
@aitraining Exactly. It's not what Holmes did in the ring, but his corny and dull personality. His bad grammar. If Holmes was that bad then why didn't he failo a drug test? The media really ruined his image especially after the Cooney and Ali fights. Then Larry let the media get to him with the MArciano thing.
76WestSports 10 months ago 2
@76WestSports Yes - the media really taunted him with the Marciano record and Larry defintely came off too defiant and worded his self defense poorly. "...couldn't carry my jock" line was not good. BUT, I would take the Easton Assasin in his 1980-ish prime vs. Marciano personally :) Holmes had the best Jab I ever saw and it seemed like he never got hurt while he was champion. Was he ever knocked down when he was champion? I don't remember it.
aitraining 10 months ago

He also got up from a Mike Tyson bomb.

loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 .But what about Lyle ,Tirell, Forman, Williams...they were all huge and Ali knocked them out Tirell went the distance however Ali beat him up bad..what about Joe Buchner He was very big and Ali beat him twice easy....
bigmace1000 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 --I hear you. But Holes' style was similar to Ali's (they used to be sparring partners). Holmes had a quick jab, not a very good KO puncher in my opinion, but knew how to use the ring very effectively. Ron Lyle did give Ali trouble for most of the fight, Williams was washed upwhen Ali got him, Bugner was slow, and we know what happened with Foreman--- but remember Ali did take some heavy body blows from George
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 You make some good points and I always wondered why Bugner did not do better as a fighter..so are you saying that speed was Bugner main problem?? Was he known for being slow?? However I do not really share your view on Lyle..Lyle did not give Ali much trouble ..it`s true Lyle did not fall in to Ali game plan or trap, however Lyle was not doing much in the fight..bit of a boring fight as i re-call...I still think a young Ali in late 1966 would have beat Cooney and Holmes
bigmace1000 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 ---no question the Ali of 1966 beats either of these guys, and would beat Cooney soundly. I think the Ali of 66-67 (and just imagine what he would have been like in 68-69) would have beaten anyone.
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 I agree man, that dude was nasty right before he went away and I think he would have hit his true peak in 68-69. The greatness shined through though and it just goes to show how good he was that he could accomplish all that afterwards.
brybry19871987 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 It's a damn shame that we never got to see Ali in his prime. He was like 25 when he was stripped of his title and was 29 when he began his comeback. So his peak years 25-28 were essentislly wasted.

MrIronval 1 year ago
@MrIronval Cooney had a great shot against the much older Holmes. He didn't know Holmes would be using banned substances just like Aaron Pryor.
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 yeah it's funny how people always come up with excuses when their fighters lose a fight but when they win it's because they re great truth is cooney wasn't champion material lots of great fighters couldn't beat holmes even past his prime like ray mercer shavers couldn't get him either nor even berbick and cooney is not nearly as good as those guys just look at the fight and you'll see who the best man was
MrIronval 1 year ago
@MrIronval The issue was the use of banned performance enhancers number one which if discovered at the time would have resulted in the stripping of his title and two the use these substances at a time when Cooney was winning the fight. The other guy breaking the law and cheating with performance enhancers is not an excuse but IS a fact. Another FASCT is Holmes was using when his corner resorted to sniffers to wake him up. So I suppose you cosign the drug use?
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 those are just allegations and some fighters were using roids and other stuff for years like brains out toney or tommy morrison and about holmes they just said that because people din't like him even if he was using he wouldn't be the first one nor the last one plus no one can tell if he was using or not those are just rumours been beatean for the heavyweight title is a hard pill to swallow but being a sore loser is even worst accept it like a man would make people remember you

rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 whatever man i don't see why people get so upset about fighters using these it's physically impossible to stay on top without a little help especially past one prime i think the reason why they using is whern they come to realise that the only thing they good at would slip through teir fingers if they don't make that decision imean honestly my friend what would you do in their place lose it all or take the risk?EASY TO JUDGE FROM WHERE WE STAND but how about if we were inthat place

Its easy to understand Ali had FEAR of Foreman no other explanation is acceptable as simple as that . The GREATEST of all time is George Foreman .
frank581949 1 year ago
@bandit7498 Absolutely right. If there HAD been a rematch Ali would have knocked George out earlier.
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 ,Very easy to say if there was a REMATCH Ali would have knocked Foreman ..But in FACT Ali refused REMATCH in normal times to Foreman .This proves Ali greatly feared Foreman . Ali has not even been able to win against Joe Frazier , Ken Norton , even the little SPINK was not even a real heavy weight Ali lost all these boxers have been gentleman enough to give Ali a REMATCH. Why Ali has not done the same thing for Foreman??The whole question is there ! Greatest of all Foreman !
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 --Foreman may have been one of the greatest punchers, but come on---he had weaknesses that good fighterscouldexploit---no 1, his gross lack of endurance; slow hands another one. He didnt always know how to handle himself in ring too well when he didnt KO opponent---Ali, Jimmy Young fights are examples.
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 ,If I follow your reasoning Ali is not been better since he lost against a very weak heavyweight Leon Spink ..... Lost against Joe Frazier, Ken Norton ...... But the only difference between her three boxers they give REMATCH to Ali ...... But him Ali has denied the REMATCH to Foreman immediately after the fight in Zaire .That is one of many issues among many other makes me say that Foreman was the greatest of all time . End of discussion BYE !
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 STOOP DREAMING. I loved foreman but a much older ALI beat Foreman in his PRIME. Theres really no comparison. It was a CLEAR FINISH, no need to rehash with another shot. So instead of fighting Ali, Foreman moved on. A few years later, a relative unknown Lyle smacked the shit out of Foreman instead.
depper 1 year ago
@depper ,,,,,I disagree with you. Firstly Foreman won his fight against Lyle . So before you say stupid things inform you correctly . Secondly in my humble opinion Foreman has been at any point of view superior than Ali because Ali had refused to give Foreman a REMATCH . Thirdly I like better Foreman because Foreman is a fighter attacking so offensive .. unlike Ali who is on the defensive especially against the big slugger and Ali could count on the judges who favored Ali 99.9% of the time
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 thats where your wrong, fair dues ali didnt exactly jump at the chance to give foreman a rematch considering he took alot of damage in their fight, especially internally, kidneys etc........BUT the winner of jimmy young v foreman was ment to fight ali, unfortunately foreman lost that fight and ali put on a terrible show against young, reason being is i think ali purposely put on alot of weight to anticipate the foreman fight and was just plannin on rope-a-dopein again.......meh
ricochetshotz 1 year ago
@frank581949 thank god a few peeps see ali was overrated,any1 think ali better, just imagine doug jones or henry cooper giving 4man a hard time like he did ali
finetubs 1 year ago
@frank581949 ----fact that Ali didnt give him rematch doesnt mean Foreman was superior. George looked bad in Ali fight. Was throwing wild amateurish punches towards end that lacked power. Ali may not have wanted to train hard again for a rematch; or maybe public wasnt clamoring for a rematch. Rumors are that Foreman ducked Jerry Quarry; doesnt mean George wouldnt have KO'd him (he would have, or stopped him on cuts); just means he didnt want to risk it, if he could get title shot without it.
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 So true many skilled and quick boxers would defeat Foreman in the ring. Larry Holmes would outsmart and outbox Foreman in the ring eventually ko'ing him. However in a street fight without rules and regulations Foreman would kill Holmes in heartbeat if he could catch him. The same goes for Ali, young and even Holyfield in the ring they will always beat foreman in the ring but in a streetfight it would be lights out for them.
fgjfdgjf 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 , And this is not all many rematch Ali win Ali have preferential treatment by the judges if Ali dont have favor of judges Ali would have lost . Foreman has never been favored by judges when Foreman won the first battle very easy against Joe Frazier and in the REMATCH Foreman has given to Frazier Foreman still win easily because Frazier had to give up before the end because if Frazier would continue Foreman would have to pass the KO . Foreman is the greatest of all time
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 Explain Foreman's knockout at the hands of Jimmy Young. No George was not the greatest ever. Not even in the top 10.
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@rickyrecon45 ,When Foreman lost against Jimmy Young he was exhausted from his fight against Ron Lyle. Ali has lost against the very small Heavyweight Spink and the REMATCH against Spink battle seemed decide beforehand . Many fight Ali won Ali had the favor of judges .And what proves to me above all Foreman been higher to Ali its the FACT Ali did not give Foreman the REMATCH of CENTURY Ali had FEAR of Foreman . Let Justice foreman and recognize FOREMAN the GREATEST OF ALL TIME !
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 I'm gonna give you a break here and not belabor the point.
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@frank581949 ---Foreman-Lyle fight was in 1976; George fought Young in 1977. Hey I know Foreman's endurance was horrible, but even he couldnt have been that tired 1 yr later. Young exploited his weaknesses and was too clever (even though not a particularly good fighter). If George didnt KO opponent, he was in trouble. A guy who only held title a 1/1/2 yrs cant be the greatest. Ali was finished when he fought Spinks, he just didnt want to quit.
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10,You have your opinion on this matter.. .I have mine!! I saw the fight Young / Foreman in my opinion Foreman deserved to win but the judges have never been favorable Foreman. Unlike Ali, who has fully deserved to lose but the judges and the boxing federation gave preferential treatment to Ali as in the third rematch Ali / Norton Ali had clearly lost that fight .I respect you prefers Ali . But I prefer Foreman especially Foreman has suffered some injustice !!
frank581949 1 year ago
@frank581949 Ali did deserve to lose 3d Norton fight. He was 34 at time, and should have retired. Joe Louis got preferential treatment from judges towards end of his career. Foreman looked bad against Young---u r the 1st person I've heard that thinks Foreman won. There was no injustice. Young was just very clever and Foreman couldnt handle his style.

Gerry boxed to prove he could go the distance and was a complete fighter to all his critics. If he would have fought his fight he probably would've taken Holmes out. All in all, he did one helluva job boxing Holmes.

@liveshowgrlz He got his fucking ass KICKED!!!! Don't try to spin it
jermaine550 1 year ago
@jermaine550 Two esteemed boxing authorities, Angelo Dundee and Sal Marchiano attribute Holmes win to his use of banned substances yet you still persist in... what.."Cooney would have lost anyway"? Even Howard Cosell did a TV special about the famous 10th round when Cooney beat up Holmes then came back in 11th strong after he got another shot of amyl nitrate. Cooney reformed himself from an alcohol problem in 88. Holmes still goes around saying things like Ali couldn't hit.
rickyrecon45 1 year ago
@liveshowgrlz ---I dont know why u think Cooney was trying to prove he could go the distance.. His strength was his KO power---no secret there. Holmes just had him on experience and command of the ring. (as well as endurance)
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 I believe Cooney actually said he was trying to prove he wasn't just an early knockout artist and wanted to prove he could go the distance.
bptaylor11 1 year ago
@bptaylor11 --we all know fighters say things after losing a fight to excuse the loss. I remember Ali saying, after 1st Frazier fight, that he employed the rope - a dope tactic because he wanted to show that he stand there and take Frazier's best blows. Real reason of course is that he only boxed 18 rds in past 3 1/2 yrs. He had to hope Joe would punch himself out. You go with your strength-Cooney may have paced himself somewhat, but he was trying to win not prove something
loyaldude10 1 year ago
@loyaldude10 Good comments. My memory is not what it used to be but I thought he talked of going the distance before the fight.
Too many years and beers ago now.
You are right, Cooney would have gladly taken the heavyweight title instead of proving anything.

you guys are all fags for talking about politics on a boxing video. take your shit elsewhere
monr31 2 years ago
@scorzeny45 I loved how some whites say Blacks cant complain because they have a black president. Having one black president doesn't mean racism ended, in fact if anything, it proved its alive and well. And having one Black President doesn't make it "equal". Equal is 50/50! In case you've forgot. 1 out of 43 aint even. Thats actually extremely racist.

Of course more white people commit violent crimes-because there are more white people. Per capita?? not even close. Black people are committing far more violent crimes, regardless of who gets sent to the big house and who doesn't. Not racist, just true.

Even back then boxing writers like in The Ring and KO magazines used a lot of ink to inform everybody "the heavyweight division is terrible".
