xbox been doing this for the last 2 weeks. Thought i'd try this as I had nothing to lose. Took disc out first and did the drop! didn't work but made me feel better, like I was getting revenge. Tried 3 times on the front, didn't work but I could tell by the sound that something was different. Tried it on the side opposite the hard drive & f*ckin miracle - it worked!!! fanx man, great post!!!
I tried @cockyguitarist idea and it didnt work at first dont drop it on a pillow!!! make sure you have enough height to make it move! 2 hours later I tried it again on a thin carpet and it worked. Thanks man.
@MegaJarass Yeah, the pillow drop . . . the banging. Nothing worked for more than 3 minutes. It's all good, it was still under warranty so it's already been shipped to Texas. Just hope it's a quick trip
ok guys im replying to what cocky said. the reason why this works is because your laser in your xbox is not at its starting position which means the laser isnt under the disk when you put it in soo when you drop your xbox on a pillow g-force pulls the laser down to its starting postion. :D
if your xbox wont play the disc keep tapping the xbox while its layed down until it plays your disc open and keep closing and tapping ur xbox it will wrk trust me i do it all the time :)

Just so everyone knows and they dont have to go back a couple pages, have your xbox about 4-6 inches off the ground above a padded surface/carpet (possibly a pillow) with the on button facing down. Drop it onto the pillow maybe a couple times. This legitimately works, which is what is so awesome and yet weird about it. (and obviously dont have any disks in the thing!) Think it may something to do with dvds but oh well. Another tip, keep your xbox horizontal so it wont laser your discs.

the reaosn y if it will work(havnt tryed it yet) is bcos most of the time..the lasor in the xbox on the disc tray is not where it is supose to be..and that y it says open tray...bcos it is not detecting the disc, by dropping it on a pillow forward...this brings the lasor forward, to make it b able to read the disc...and dis will on work if wen u put a disc in and it litterally after 2-3 seconds it says open tray...where as the prob dis guy has is diferent, this guy has to ...it wont let me finsh

We got ours working!!! Thanks for the post BR! We've had our console apart before so we were able to figure out how to fix ours from the video you posted. For those who don't know, you'll need to lift out the CD tray and take off one of the lids to expose the laser reader that needs reoriented. We also cleaned out alot of dust and fiber that collected on the laser rails. We made sure not remove the lubricant from the rails. I hope this additional information is helpful. It truly is an easy fix.
ucbf1 suggested that you drop the Xbox on a padded carpet with the on switch pointed and cd tray pointed toward the floor. He said to drop it from a height of about 6 inches.

@tootootoo3 the problem is it can happen again. I glued a piece of aluminum foil on the inside of the case above the laser carriagle's outermost position to give it something to reflect against to trick it into moving inward on it's own. It works like a charm.

try unplugging EVERYTHING on ur xbox from the xbox not the tv, i just now had that problem and thought of doing that and it worked so i hope it works for u
hey everyone, if you are looking for ubf1's comment on how to fix this problem, which worked for me, i just went and tried it and it does work (as it did for everyone else here) I will re post it so you dont have to go find it on page 20 somewhere.
TAKE THE 360 TO A CARPETED AREA, TURN IT SO THE POWER BUTTON IS FACING THE GROUND, GENTLY BANG THE 360 ON THE CARPET A FEW TIMES. IT FIXES THE PROBLEM AND GETS YOUR FRUSTRATIONS OUT!!! LOL

Guys I have tried everything from tapping, to shuvving drive closed. I tried Ucbf's way and got an instant work first time. This is the cure to open tray error. Anybody who needs help look at UCBF's comment. Thank you so much UCBF

this is how you fix the problem, first pick up the XBOX over your head and think about the worst moments in your life. After that, with all your might throw that shit out at a nearby window and then go to a convenient gaming store to purchase a new xbox.
open the xbox and the laser is in the back of the drive and it cant see the game so pull the laser forward in the drive dont worry you wont break it ive done it and its caused from turning off the console when the disc drive is open
push the exit button on the 360...when the tray comes out take the game out and push the tray in the xbox fast...its should make some kind of noise( not a beep)then put the game in and dont close it fast...it should work...and if that doesnt work try getting some canned air and blowing bursts inside the xbox where the tray comes out...dont hold it for 2 long
i tried lightly dropping it from about 4 inches onto the padded carpet 3-4 times - xbox light down just like an earlier comment, and it worked! It just needs to jiggle something free in there. I was so frustrated and this save the day! Thanks!
a lot of Xbox 360s have this drive-glitch. when you put in your game and as soon as it says "reading", start slapping the top of your Xbox 360 *bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam*, if it goes back to "open tray", open and close and repeat. you shouldn't have to repeat that too much, 1st to 3rd try the game should continue to "load" and you'll be welcomed by your game's splash screen =)
@Gnarly1995 you'll be slapping the top around the left-center, directly above your drive. if anything was to break from doing this it would only be the drive which wouldn't ruin the entire xbox.. also so what if it did break the drive since it's the drive that's glitching(not spinning). microsoft is pretty sturdy and durible since their owners are mainly careless t33ns. i know i have been doing this method for almost a year and i haven't damaged anything, not even the drive.

ucbf1 suggested that you drop the Xbox on a padded carpet with the on switch pointed and cd tray pointed toward the floor. He said to drop it from a height of about 6 inches.

Hey dude I just done it.You have to take apart your x box get to disk drive take the 4 scews out of the disk drive and there is a disk reader thing on a sort of a track.it should be close to the laser.not in the back move it down as far as it goes.It will fell like you r moving over bumps when u move it.Now the laser can read the disk.It works like a charm

@tootootoo3 the problem is it can happen again. I glued a piece of aluminum foil on the inside of the case above the laser carriagle's outermost position to give it something to reflect against to trick it into moving inward on it's own. It works like a charm.

hey everyone, if you are looking for ubf1's comment on how to fix this problem, which worked for me, i just went and tried it and it does work (as it did for everyone else here) I will re post it so you dont have to go find it on page 20 somewhere.
TAKE THE 360 TO A CARPETED AREA, TURN IT SO THE POWER BUTTON IS FACING THE GROUND, GENTLY BANG THE 360 ON THE CARPET A FEW TIMES. IT FIXES THE PROBLEM AND GETS YOUR FRUSTRATIONS OUT!!! LOL

THIS WORKS. I fixed my son's just about an hour ago. The problem is that the laser gets stuck in a non-reading position. You don't have to open the XBOX, so you don't break the seal and void the waranty. Pick up the XBOX and hold it about 6 inches over PADDED carpet with the on button toward the carpet. lightly drop the Xbox 2 or 3 times on the carpet. You are just trying to nudge the laser assembly a notch or two on the rails it moves on. Then try the disk. It sounds crazy but it worked for us

open the xbox and the laser is in the back of the drive and it cant see the game so pull the laser forward in the drive dont worry you wont break it ive done it and its caused from turning off the console when the disc drive is open

push the exit button on the 360...when the tray comes out take the game out and push the tray in the xbox fast...its should make some kind of noise( not a beep)then put the game in and dont close it fast...it should work...and if that doesnt work try getting some canned air and blowing bursts inside the xbox where the tray comes out...dont hold it for 2 long

a lot of Xbox 360s have this drive-glitch. when you put in your game and as soon as it says "reading", start slapping the top of your Xbox 360 *bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam*, if it goes back to "open tray", open and close and repeat. you shouldn't have to repeat that too much, 1st to 3rd try the game should continue to "load" and you'll be welcomed by your game's splash screen =)

@Gnarly1995 you'll be slapping the top around the left-center, directly above your drive. if anything was to break from doing this it would only be the drive which wouldn't ruin the entire xbox.. also so what if it did break the drive since it's the drive that's glitching(not spinning). microsoft is pretty sturdy and durible since their owners are mainly careless t33ns. i know i have been doing this method for almost a year and i haven't damaged anything, not even the drive.
