Sadly, this is Earth's true fate in the Sun's next life stage as an orange/red giant. I read a few chapters about it in college astronomy. Earth will either be a charred smoldering lifeless rock with no oceans or the sun will consume it. That is still scientifically debated. Now, the good news, scientists approximate there are 5 billion years left before this for humans to find a new home. So don't fret, we all have our own problems to deal with every day as it is.

The entire sun isn't literally "exploding", it's just a ball of heated plasma. The actual explosion is in the core, consuming a few hundred tons of hydrogen per second.

@dgyorki Actually, we routinely pass through solar flares and solar winds. The earth is protected by it's atmosphere so the scenario in this movie is extremely unlikely. Looks more like a super nova than a solar flare. More than likely, if we were wiped out by something from space, it would be an asteroid or the like. Sun had a long way to go before death.

@Cajaquarius I know these very well. However, a gamma ray burst is much much stronger that a simple solar flare. If that happens in our vicinity, not to mention our star, that is a death sentence to us. As I heard, it's five times more likely for us to be wiped out by an asteroid than winning the national lottery. What a pity... :)

That's actually not what would happen if such a solar flare happened it would pump trillions of watts of energy in the magnetic field. This energy would travel in to the poles and cause Earth's core to react and speed up; making the Earth spin faster. Eventually the Earth will spin out of control and the centrifugal force would make the Earth explode and basically rip the crust a part and off.
