  • what a great way to say" you suck".... i hope you dont take yourselves too serious....spinal tap.....

  • Solitute Aeturnus sound more Candlemass than candlemass! and they still write kick ass songs!

  • I agree that it's not lowe's fault!! lief doesn't write songs like he used too. I can't believe all you guys who think DmD its the best album since nightfall wtf!!! there is nothing in common with epicus or nightfall or ancient dreams or tales.....

are you brainwashed by lief or something? ARE YOU BEWITCHED???

  • This is my favorite of the last album but i would like some high vibrato in his voice as the good old candlemass! since the dactylis and later every new album sounds like krux!!

where is the candlemass atmosphere and melody!!!

  • Messiah is overrated and gets irritating rather boring after a while. I do agree about the recent material being kind of bland, but it has to do with the poor songwriting and the change of style. Lowe is hardly to blame and he did his damn best with what was given. Anyway, awaiting for the new Solitude Aeturnus album, which will likely be much better than CM's release. They usually are.

  • Leif is Candlemass..........Messiah, Robert, Johan, Thomas, Bjorn, Mappe, Lars, and Jan are all just limbs of the body of Doom that is Candlemass.

  • 'bout the Lowe and Marcolin debate... I think that both have very good performances in Candlemass, but Marcolin has a legacy in there... Marcolin is definitely a member of Candlemass, his opera style, his tones, he gave an epic atmosphere which is the Candlemass style that we all know. Now Lowe has a strong voice who gives a different, more straight, sound to the songs. I really like KOTGI and this album. Hope to see them live someday.

  • lol it sounds like a SA song pain from through the darkest hour

  • KotGI is probably the best Candlemass release since Nightfall. Death Magic Doom is better than A Tale of Creation and all of their experimental phase. Messhiah is nothing like that, people goes nuts over him for no reason.

  • Well, I actually wanted to buy the new album, but pre-hearing it really alienated me of doing that. I cant understand why Leif Edling states this album as "the best he ever made", it sounds like things we already heard too often. Hammer of Doom seems to be that Epic Heavy Wall of Metal that CM is known for, but the rest is just uninspired and plain, may it be concerning the lyrics as well as the music. Just nothing we wouldnt have already heard in the past. So I can support your complaining.

  • I must admit, I do regret writing the rant I posted on this video - I posted it after my first play-through of the album, so I hadn't really formed a coherent opinion yet.

I recently listened to DMD again, and I don't think the song-writing is as poor as I initally believed. I realized my main issues with the album stem from Rob Lowe's performance - it's basically down to personal bias.

  • As an experiment, I imagined what the songs would sound like with Messiah singing, to see whether the problem rested solely with Lowe, or with the songwriting in general - and I came to the conclusion the songs (in my opinion) were compromised because Lowe's voice just isn't as exciting.

Basically, if you like Rob Lowe, you'll like the album - the songwriting is not in question here. Personally, I think he has a bland voice, and I think Candlemass needs that focal point that Messiah provided.

  • I think you are absolutely right!! but don't forget that messiah left becouse lief told him to cut the vibrato and the some upper range of his voice, so it's not lowe's fault that the latest albums suck!!!

  • They're still an amazing band, but for me it's just not the same without Messiah. Sorry.

  • holy shit! chorus of "Hammer of Doom" is epic!

    "THE HAMMER OF DOOOOOOOOOoooOOOM"

  • King of the Grey islands wasn't all bad. The lyrics were really damn good on some tracks, and Of Stars and Smoke is one of their /best/.

Hammer of Doom and If I ever die sounded like total crap, even on these clips. I'm excited for Funeral Dreams and Demon of the Deep. Y'know, the real DOOM. Not the up beat metal they've include on the other half.

  • Right, I've just bought "Hammer of Doom" and "If I Ever Die" from 7digital, and I thought I'd give you my first impressions.

"Hammer of Doom" is basically the same bland, uninspired stuff that we heard on the King Of The Grey Islands album. It sounds rushed and generic. Although whereas KOTGI saving grace was its above par lyrics, HOD is just campy nonsense. (The eponymous "Hammer" of the title appears to be a reference to "Hammer Horror". I'm not kidding either.)

    [continued]

  • Still, even when Candlemass are uninspired, they still blow 90% of the other crap out there clean out of the water. The chorus and the solo section are the highlights of this one. 5.5/10

My first thought when listening to "If I Ever Die", was that it sounds *a lot* like 90's era Black Sabbath - think of some of the faster, heavier tracks from the Forbidden or Dehumanizer albums (like "TV Crimes") and you're not a million miles away.

In fact, go an listen to "TV Crimes" now.

    [continued]

  • Hear that thrashy/punky chord progression in the main riff?

That's basically "IIED" in a nutshell. It was jarring when Sabbath did it, and it's just a downright faux pas when Candlemass does it. I'm all for experimentation, but this just doesn't work.

Again, the lyrics are the weakest link here, and an unusual amount of emphasis is placed on them - the band will occasionally stop playing leaving Robert Lowe alone wailing platitudes like "If I ever die... I wanna know when! And Why-ee-ii!!!"

  • doooooom... candlemass are the gods of the doom riff!

  • Shit, amazing. This is gonna be there best album.

  • I love it! ima get it

  • Awesome! Demon Of The Deep sounds very Cthulhu based! Finally, Rob's vocals soar! cant wait!!!!!

  • \m/ jee !! :D

  • bet its a bit more radio friendly ...still if they get more fame and success they deserve it theyre a great band and seem like great guys too :)))

  • I have a radio edit version of HAMMER OF DOOM. PM me if you'd like me to send it.

  • these tunes are really great, i can't wait to hear the new album!

  • Messiah fanatics quit whining and move on. There's many other bands you can listen to, it's your loss. Lowe is better all around and I can't wait for this new album that seems to be written especially with his voice in mind. Now he can really show what he's capable of.

By the way, sounds fucken EPIC! Can't wait!

  • This comes out not too long before my birthday. I'll tell my dad to consider this as a gift for me. Sounds pretty awesome from these samples.

  • Can't wait. I've always preferred Lowe over Messiah.

  • Sounds AWESOME. Cant' wait for April 2nd!!!!!!!

  • "DEATH MAGIC DOOM"... that's the name of the record.... can't wait!

  • I agree Messiah was great. I am a fan of earlier albums as well. Its just that all die hard messiah fans truly believe that candlemass is dead without him. They now have one of the best voices in the metal world and they still talk about how it was better in the old days :|

And for me Leif Edling is candlemass, not messiah.

  • This is going to be epic.

  • Simply awesome guitar solo in My Funeral Dreams. And great vocal work by Mr. Lowe too!

    Messiah who?

  • Bout time they got a little upbeat!

  • Just...can't wait

  • holy fucking shit this is the best candlemass has sounded for a while... fucking epic. i cant wait

  • Yeah, "My Funeral Dreams" is realy fuck awesome!

  • Can't fucking wait ...simply amazing , my funeral dreams - best song for 2009 !!!

  • thank you.... i cant wait

  • Just say NO to radio, and say YES to song excerpt samplers!

    YOUTUBE 4 LIFE!!!

Radio just has a pointless amount of uncertainty, that is why we have "no strings attached" when checking out YouTube!

  • wow! simply amazing!

the hammer of dooooom is upon us!

can't wait to hear the new stuff!

  • Oh, my, GOD! This is going to be so damn great!

I can't wait for the 27th of March!

  • I feel crushed and taken over by the essence of doom.. Hail Candlemass, may you record many new albums for us, your loyal servants of the void.

  • "My Funeral Dreams"...leaves me speechless - the power of the vocals and the feeling in the solo are undeniable

  • Gonna be great!!

  • Fuck yeah, this sounds promising!

  • hehe yeah go candlemass you rock !!! hammer of dooooooooooom :D

  • Thanks for this!

    Sounds fantastically good.

  • "If I Ever Die" and "My Funeral Dreams" sound fucking badass.

  • i just jizzed my pants

  • Wow, sounds like a new masterpiece! Among with Kreators "Hordes Of Chaos" a have-to-get for my record dealer... 2009 is going to become a good year for metal!

  • This makes me happy in pants.

  • Sounds great!! Can't wait!!
