I agree that it's not lowe's fault!! lief doesn't write songs like he used too. I can't believe all you guys who think DmD its the best album since nightfall wtf!!! there is nothing in common with epicus or nightfall or ancient dreams or tales.....
are you brainwashed by lief or something? ARE YOU BEWITCHED???
This is my favorite of the last album but i would like some high vibrato in his voice as the good old candlemass! since the dactylis and later every new album sounds like krux!!
Messiah is overrated and gets irritating rather boring after a while. I do agree about the recent material being kind of bland, but it has to do with the poor songwriting and the change of style. Lowe is hardly to blame and he did his damn best with what was given. Anyway, awaiting for the new Solitude Aeturnus album, which will likely be much better than CM's release. They usually are.
'bout the Lowe and Marcolin debate... I think that both have very good performances in Candlemass, but Marcolin has a legacy in there... Marcolin is definitely a member of Candlemass, his opera style, his tones, he gave an epic atmosphere which is the Candlemass style that we all know. Now Lowe has a strong voice who gives a different, more straight, sound to the songs. I really like KOTGI and this album. Hope to see them live someday.
KotGI is probably the best Candlemass release since Nightfall. Death Magic Doom is better than A Tale of Creation and all of their experimental phase. Messhiah is nothing like that, people goes nuts over him for no reason.
He has a decent upper range, but he almost never uses it - instead favouring his bland mid range voice.
If KOTGI was an uninspired Candlemass, DMD is a Candlemass that's taking the piss out of their fans, and their legacy.
As soon as I heard tracks like "House of a Thousand Voices" and "Dead Angel" I was immediately reminded of the worst cases of previously respected bands like Metallica and Cryptopsy experimenting with such poor results it tarnished their reputations forever. [continued]
Most of the songs on this album have an insufferable sense of accessibility (not in a good way) and it's hard not to be aware of the stench of "selling out" - many of the songs musically and lyrically have a light "Gothic" flair to them that is so off-putting and cringeworthy it makes you wonder how a band that had such a feel for solemnity and honesty in their music could produce something so shallow and crappy. [continued]
I know no-one likes a complainer (even when the criticisms are valid) but I felt I had to vent my disappointment. I'm sure most of you will think I'm over-reacting, but trust me; calling this album the doom metal equivalent of St. Anger wouldn't be too far off the mark. It's just that *bad*.
Well, I actually wanted to buy the new album, but pre-hearing it really alienated me of doing that. I cant understand why Leif Edling states this album as "the best he ever made", it sounds like things we already heard too often. Hammer of Doom seems to be that Epic Heavy Wall of Metal that CM is known for, but the rest is just uninspired and plain, may it be concerning the lyrics as well as the music. Just nothing we wouldnt have already heard in the past. So I can support your complaining.
I must admit, I do regret writing the rant I posted on this video - I posted it after my first play-through of the album, so I hadn't really formed a coherent opinion yet.
I recently listened to DMD again, and I don't think the song-writing is as poor as I initally believed. I realized my main issues with the album stem from Rob Lowe's performance - it's basically down to personal bias.
As an experiment, I imagined what the songs would sound like with Messiah singing, to see whether the problem rested solely with Lowe, or with the songwriting in general - and I came to the conclusion the songs (in my opinion) were compromised because Lowe's voice just isn't as exciting.
Basically, if you like Rob Lowe, you'll like the album - the songwriting is not in question here. Personally, I think he has a bland voice, and I think Candlemass needs that focal point that Messiah provided.
I think you are absolutely right!! but don't forget that messiah left becouse lief told him to cut the vibrato and the some upper range of his voice, so it's not lowe's fault that the latest albums suck!!!
Yup. Who wants yet another Dio ripoff singing in a metal band? We already have Ripper Owens and Dio himself, the new guy in Candlemass kills their entire gimmick.
King of the Grey islands wasn't all bad. The lyrics were really damn good on some tracks, and Of Stars and Smoke is one of their /best/.
Hammer of Doom and If I ever die sounded like total crap, even on these clips. I'm excited for Funeral Dreams and Demon of the Deep. Y'know, the real DOOM. Not the up beat metal they've include on the other half.
Right, I've just bought "Hammer of Doom" and "If I Ever Die" from 7digital, and I thought I'd give you my first impressions.
"Hammer of Doom" is basically the same bland, uninspired stuff that we heard on the King Of The Grey Islands album. It sounds rushed and generic. Although whereas KOTGI saving grace was its above par lyrics, HOD is just campy nonsense. (The eponymous "Hammer" of the title appears to be a reference to "Hammer Horror". I'm not kidding either.)
Still, even when Candlemass are uninspired, they still blow 90% of the other crap out there clean out of the water. The chorus and the solo section are the highlights of this one. 5.5/10
My first thought when listening to "If I Ever Die", was that it sounds *a lot* like 90's era Black Sabbath - think of some of the faster, heavier tracks from the Forbidden or Dehumanizer albums (like "TV Crimes") and you're not a million miles away.
Hear that thrashy/punky chord progression in the main riff?
That's basically "IIED" in a nutshell. It was jarring when Sabbath did it, and it's just a downright faux pas when Candlemass does it. I'm all for experimentation, but this just doesn't work.
Again, the lyrics are the weakest link here, and an unusual amount of emphasis is placed on them - the band will occasionally stop playing leaving Robert Lowe alone wailing platitudes like "If I ever die... I wanna know when! And Why-ee-ii!!!"
Trust me, it's even more cringe-worthy than it sounds.
It is nice to hear Candlemass get out of bottom gear occasionally and play a little more uptempo, but the only reason I enjoyed this song even marginally, was down to nostalgia - because it reminded me of a criminally underrated chapter in Black Sabbath's history!
Again, Johansson saves this track from the trashpile, with his usual guitar wizardry - but other than his contribution, this one's a real stinker. 2/10.
I really wanted to enjoy these songs - I was hyped up, because the clips here are the best parts.
Considering these are the two opening songs - it doesn't bide well for the rest of the album, but naturally I'm going to withhold judgement until I hear it in its entirety. I'm still extremely disappointed though.
Messiah fanatics quit whining and move on. There's many other bands you can listen to, it's your loss. Lowe is better all around and I can't wait for this new album that seems to be written especially with his voice in mind. Now he can really show what he's capable of.

Candlemass WAS Messiah. Don't downvote him cause you prefer Robert Lowe. Ever since the S/T album they've been Heavy Metal. The production is too fast and clean to be real doom, but King of the Gray Isles was a step in the right direction.
This is sounding like doom though. Heavy, wall exploding doom. Can't wait.
I agree Messiah was great. I am a fan of earlier albums as well. Its just that all die hard messiah fans truly believe that candlemass is dead without him. They now have one of the best voices in the metal world and they still talk about how it was better in the old days :|
And for me Leif Edling is candlemass, not messiah.

FOR FUCKS SAKE.
Death Magic Doom is absolutely fucking atrocious. It's a travesty that this pile of SHIT bears the Candlemass name.
I was willing to give Rob Lowe a fair chance, because I like his work with SA, but he simply isn't right for this band. [continued]
