Most of its in powder you can lean back in the powder to lift the tips of your skis out of the snow, effectively skiing on top of the powder. Gives you more control.

No You cant turn at the bottom of deep snow. When you jump in the powder you put your weight back to get you skis on top of the powder thats why they do it. Trust me! Skiing in the powder is very different to skiing on the piste. You cant ski in knee deep powder with your weight forward.
