@masterchief1425 Iraq isn't really a 'modern war'. More like a little skirmish between a big nation and a small one. If any nation endangers any of the big nations, nukes will be launched. Just because Iraq didn't have the ability to do so, doesn't mean big nations wont use them.

That's war for you. Ironic that citizens are brainwashed into believing that their soldiers are heroes who are fighting for the greater good. They are not. Don't get me wrong, they are certainly brave. But anyone who is fighting a phony unnecessary war is not a hero. WW2 veterans are heroes, they fought for a legit cause. Today's soldiers are brainwashed until they go out on the battlefield - which is when they realise what it's really all about - but they do have balls.

a reasons why some canadians are so good at shooting is because they grow up on farms and shoot gophers with a 22 or bb guns. i can shoot a gopher 50 yrds no scope. of course there are other reasons too.

@MrFreedomrequired The horizon or curvature of the earth at 16 miles would make it impossible to shoot a target 39 miles away......unless of course you couold go matrix and curve the bullet.....or lob a round such as artrillary.......but a straight sniper shot pretty much impossible........Does that help :) Cheers!

When Conservatives came in the 2000's, we have one of the highest budgets, best equipped militaries in the world. C.I.A ranked us 10th in the world in 08' even though we are only a military of 100,000 because we have huge capabilities.

However I watch the 1950's Sea King helicopters on patrol with the Navy's lightly armed "fishing trawlers", and feel for the highly qualified service men/ women operating them.

Britain has a strong tradition of marksmanship, if the USA is so much better then why aren't they breaking these records? You have about 10x the number of troops, should be easy.

@MrFreedomrequired The horizon or curvature of the earth at 16 miles would make it impossible to shoot a target 39 miles away......unless of course you couold go matrix and curve the bullet.....or lob a round such as artrillary.......but a straight sniper shot pretty much impossible........Does that help :) Cheers!

Craig Harrison, of the British Household Cavalry did break Rob Furlong's record. My understanding is that there is a new shot that breaks even that record.
If you put Harrison and Furlong in a room together they wouldn't argue. They'd compare notes and congratulate each other.

I don't want to start a country debate as has gone on here already. You have to have respect for the skill and dedication required to pull off such a feat of extreme accuracy.
Without a doubt with the incredible power of the .50 cal, this record will broken at some point. Respect is due to the guys that pull this off where ever they are from!!

When Conservatives came in the 2000's, we have one of the highest budgets, best equipped militaries in the world. C.I.A ranked us 10th in the world in 08' even though we are only a military of 100,000 because we have huge capabilities.

@metalfrommaine The British sniper who currently holds the record did it with a British designed and made Accuracy International rifle in .338 lapua magnum...even the ammunition design isn't American, it's Finnish.
Britain has a strong tradition of marksmanship, if the USA is so much better then why aren't they breaking these records? You have about 10x the number of troops, should be easy.

That's confirmed though. NO LIE.. The new world record is not one that will be recorded "officially". But there was a kill southeast of the Afgani border that was on a very high ranking government official by an unnamed member of a Special Forces sniper from a distance of 2740 meters ( 8990 feet). A new world record that can't be "Confirmed".

He has two confirmed kills of a pair of Taliban machine gunners from a November 2009 engagement south of Musa Qala, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The shots were GPS confirmed at a range of 2,475 m (2,707 yd), and made with a L115A3 Long Range Rifle chambered for the .338 cal. Lapua Magnum.
