I simultaneously feel bad for Pete and don't feel bad. On the one hand, he did get the boot right before they got famous. That kind of sucks. Yet, from what I've read, he also wasn't terribly close to the rest of the band just 'cause he didn't want to get close to them. I've also heard it said he was only in it for the money, but I can't verify that.

There was not guarantee the Beatles were going to go on and be as big as they were, that is only known in hindsight. Although he released a few records with his own band between 1963 and 1966, Best spent the rest of the '60s and '70s working normal jobs (eventually becoming a manager at the job centre). It was only in the late 80s, by public demand, he came back into the public eye.
