  • NEEDS to be on spotify, I lost my copy of the cd :'(

  • I just discovered this song two days ago and I've listened to it like 100 times already... so good

  • the instrumental parts sound exactly like "i will follow" from U2

  • @dogfriend3 well, how to say it - no.

  • The fact that this track isn't even from one of their top three albums speaks volumes about how incredible this band is.

  • Matt looks like a clean cut Kurt Cobain. I never thought I would compare matt to him but in this video, in my opinion, he just looks and reminds me of him =)

  • i seel sorry for the people who don't like this, and even more for the people who don't know the national

  • Great song! Prefer the live version (e.g. iTunes festival) though, where they added the "cardinal song" -end! Still one of their best songs! :)

  • Greatest band of this decade! More like the greatest band of this century!

  • i like to thumbs up both top comments.

  • i think that this is their best song =X

  • @victoireGGG one of the best :)

  • i hope that one day I will wake up and learn the secret to matts screaming

  • @robertjm194 put part of your soul in your mouth, then SCREAM YOUR HEART OUT! Oh and I do mean that in a literal way lol jk! But just put your heart and soul into it man. I know you got what it takes. =)

  • Does anyone else think Matt looks kind of like Wash from Firefly in this video?

  • OMFG WTF HAVE I JUST HEARD!!!! AMAZING

  • you just made yourself available..ouch!

  • I have a different feeling of the song. I think it is really the question of eating each other, of lasting passion what you cannot control. The song is all about the desire, the will to touch the other one who is so available so irresistable. To be touched, liquored up, dressed donw giving yourself away to the hands of the beloved. And the end of the song is just lust. Let's do it (again) the yearn for it!

A great song! Passion & intensity, beautiful.

  • band of my life

  • @shinzgirl When I saw them live Matt said it was about "eating each other", I'm not sure if he was joking though.

  • @TheOissin ya think the metaphor of 'relational cannibalism' might be one of his favorite themes??? (Conversation 16)...

  • @tominrochester yeah, probably. I don't know that many of their songs though, so I've never really thought about that.

  • @shinzgirl I'd say it's about what we all know so well - when you're not in love but the other person is.

Just like that, they're available-and so you can't help but use them.

You know that it's wrong and that you're hurting people but...Matt here is saying, this is all about sex- and not about love, wasn't it so clear for you?

And when he screams at the end,he's trying to let out the guilt, the shame, and....the feeling that with the next one 'available'...everything will start over again.

  • @Nomar71 mybe use r going a bit 2 deep, just enjoy the song

  • ha, deadly tune, i wonder does the bass player actually play guitar for this song, reminds me of U2 for some reason

  • I am always leary to label bands "greatest" but I would never be able to argue against the notion that the national are one of the best bands ever! So musical and edgy too-while the lyrics just blow you away. I am glad I happened to stumble upon them just recently unfortunately. Thanks for making such great music-it helps!

  • LIQUOR ME UP! Best National song EVER!

  • love this song , I can't hear it enough!!

  • Joy Division

  • Why doesn't this song last forever?

  • Anyone who ever dated someone they didn't love, or loved someone who didn't love them back can relate to the scorn and self-loathing in these lyrics.

  • the live version is much better!

  • WHY DID YOU DRESS ME DOWN!

  • what the hell is that? amazing... incrredible stuff. thumbs up! that's music!d

  • Try also the Belgain groups " Triggerfinger" and the "Blackbox revalation"

  • can someone tell me what he is saying in this song? i think i get it. but im not sure i understand what it means. "how can you blame yourself

when I did everything I wanted to, you just made yourself available" ? how about this part?

  • @stephaniee1109 if you havent had a look at song meanings before it might be worth looking at, just search song meanings in google, the people who have posted can probably explain what it could mean better than i can :)

  • @pieman4545 thank you

  • @stephaniee1109

i think it mean that she blames herself for everything wrong in their relationship. even he knows it is mostly his fault, because he's doing everything "he wanted to". the problem is he just doesn't love her and that makes him to act ignorant. you just made yourself availible means that she is too availible, she does everything(and too much) for him.. you know men are hunters and that stuff.

    this is just my opinion.

  • @ThousandthSkies well i like your opinion. sounds right. Thanks (:

  • U2 / The Cult and Joy Division blend this tune.. good combo.

  • I looove this song

  • Holy Shit~this song just blew me away!!! LOVE them!!!

  • they have come such a long way. this song is fucking amazing though. even in their earlier days they were fucking awesome.

  • intro reminds me of the cult's "she sells sanctuary" :)

  • @pascal30 the first thought I had: the Cult, but even if they don't want to, he sounds like Ian Curtis
