  • This song is amusing because it's actually such a put down (Ie "the message may not move me or mean a great deal to me..")

  • Did Mary ever borrow from Peter to pay Paul?

  • I dig the mamas and the papas too!

  • ....and that song is about as 'cool' as they ever got.

  • he digs it

  • nicholas cage's father is singing

  • I know many feel this way too, but really, what happened to music? Nothing today can hold a candle to even this one song. Well, maybe a tiny bit, but overall, no.

  • @1968RYS

Hi, PP&M had good taste since this song is an hommage to the Papa's and the Mama's (namely and by reference to Michelle and Cass).

What happened to the music ? Well at the time they sang love, and now the songs are rather poor due to bad subjects and trash attitude.

Music was, and still is, good so long musicians dreamed. It seems they awaked in a dark world with no more inspiration nor hope.

Fortunately, mankind invented magnetic tapes and LP discs...

  • @1968RYS: It's just partly perception though. You remember all these great artists from the 60s, but do you actually go out and seek out great music from today? My guess is probably not, most people decide that music can't hold a candle to the music of their youth and so they don't ever bother searching for good bands.

Good music is still out there. Check out the Avett Brothers, Alexei Murdoch, Iron and Wine, Azure Ray, the Softies, Bell and Sebastian.

  • he looks soo good in that blue

  • WOW!!!! Sounds a lot bigger than just 3 people and a couple folk guitars.

  • @ricdeed: Because it is. They're being backed by hand drums and what sounds like a bass. But I do think they're actually playing and singing and not just lip-synching, I just think they have a backing track with the rhythm instruments.

  • Paul is awesome man.

  • this is a great song--yes pity you dont have the complete segment-thanx for posting

  • nice

  • This has to be the most non-rockin' song with "rock and roll" in the title.

  • I always thought it was taking the 'mickey'

  • @IrishandFolkmusic Yes, that was the intent, but I don't think made-for-tv folk music had any claim on being a "superior" art form to rock and roll. People like what they like, and for different reasons - for dancing, for the vibe, for the connotation, or innuendo... I can't imagine Dylan singing this song (interesting that he had the same manager for a while as these guys)

  • Great song... and she is amazing!!!*

  • Mary Travers was a hottie back in the day. She passed away in September after a brief battle with leukemia. She was 71 or 72.

  • This clip was taken from a documentary on Peter, Paul and Mary I just watched. The documentary showed this part and that's all, that's why the poster can't post the rest.

They give a full, and a great, performance here -

    watch?v=TrXXx9706tc

A very clever song, written by Paul Stookey. It has a message. Listen to the lyrics.

  • And I get a thumbs down for what, exactly??

    Everything I posted was factual.

Why give me a thumbs down??

  • Some people are trolls. I wish YT would make some kind of change to the "thumbs-up&down" function to keep people from abusing it, or maybe it should just be gotten rid of altogether. The same for marking things "spam" - that is SO abused by idiots!

When scrolling through comments, I often give thumbs-ups just to counter negatives, when they are unjust.

  • @ejectorerector lol lol lol! Yeah you're right he's nasty mate! lol Just for that comment I'm sending you a friend request!

  • PP&M is a relief of my mind.

They are alive now in my Heart.

Please listen our cover song. PP&M - I dig rock'n'roll music( Cover)

  • Does anyone have a full performance?

To those who complain, maybe the used uploading DOESN'T HAVE the whole thing. If you'd rather not have it at all, because it's not complete, than DON'T WATCH!

I'd rather see some, than none. BUT if someone's got the whole thing, BRING IT ON!

RIP, Mary... Thanks for your wonderful gift!

  • @screwyootube1 There is a full version on You Tube but it's hard to find. It's performed at an earlier time and it's black & white. I tried to post the link but I couldn't.

  • I since found it by simply searching for the title (without including the artist name). Sometimes you have to be creative (both the uploader & the one searching), to try to avoid being detected by the "copyright-police"!

    Here it is, just put

    youtube(dot)com in front:

    /watch?v=TrXXx9706tc

  • I like simple songs.

Songs with stories or a simple message or expressing feelings.

But most music nowadays, to me is very complicated and very messy.

-No offense to those people who like today's singers.

  • i like songs you can understand the words as opposed to that rap crap

  • Play the rest of the song, Damnit !

  • Nice, but please put it all on or not at all.

It is disappointing to stop mid song.

  • I agree! I'd like to hear the rest of the song too.

  • mary was grooving

  • I wish that there was a longer segment. Damn, why don't we have music like this anymore? (I'm 20 and am sick of today's materialistic jibbberish!)

  • @thgil567 im 21 and i agree

  • groovy.

  • d young vibrant, animated MARY Travers..innate passion n in-depth perfection....everytym she sings live...people get obsessed n hypnotic by her stage presence..PPM is a legend, n d full-of-life Mary Travers is a Gift, ur in God's hands ..Rest in Peace

  • It's interesting how Peter, Paul and Mary tended to be sooooo much better in their live performances than they were in their studio recordings, which were sometimes bland and sanitized. There's an energy, life and spontaneity in the live videos, including this one, and more complex rhythms and harmonies, than I ever heard on their LPs. It's great to hear/see these online.

  • in doing a take on the mama an papa's style they actually out did them in their own style.

    R I P - mary

  • PLEASE PLEASE, WHERE'S THE REST OF IT?

  • das singen wir in unserm schulchor :D

  • wir auch im chor

  • So sad to hear about Mary's passing. Peace be with you M. Greatest folk group ever.

  • OH MAN...Can you post the WHOLE song! Really dig this version...RIP Mary

  • Travelmanxx ? WTF? How could somebody so completely miss the point of Peter Paul and Mary? God bless you - but get a clue.

  • travelmanxx - It's "Peter, Paul and Mary", get a clue, they sing together!!!,.....though you alway have the option of buying one of "Mary Travers" solo CD's if YOU don't want to hear the other fine voices.

  • RIP Mary. I'll miss you

  • She was really beautiful and had a great voice. Goodbye Mary, R.I.P.

  • My favorite PPM song....Mary was the best. We'll miss her. The end of an iconic era.

  • Why is this song cut in half?!

  • Amazing singing beautiful lady!

  • Mary Travers R.I. P. we will iss you.

  • Peter Paul and Mary were my favorite band a few years back and this used to be my favorite song and R.I.P Mary and thank you for being a part of a band that really changed my life, you will be missed

  • Cool!

  • R.I.P. Mary....Always a class act ..your music live on forever!

  • What a great person and a great singer. I giant of folk music. And the lyrics in this song are quite clever. Some biting sarcasm there, but even rock and roll fans have to admit most of the lyrics are empty. I'll take Mary Travers and Sandy Denny any day over the female singers we have now. If God gives us Music in heaven, I hope she gets her share of stage time.

  • RIP MARY

  • rip mary your voice will go on forever.

  • thanks for sharing this vintage clip

    wonderful 1960's retro

    they were music pioneers

  • Maybe it's me, but I'm still pretty young, and I think this one minute clip is better than the whole of the last VMAs.

  • especially because Kanye didn't jump on stage in this clip

  • A great parody of the Mommas and the Poppas. Bless you Mary, your music will live forever.

  • They set the tone for an entire generation. I was born in 1965 and PP&M were fundamental in my music development.

  • Thank you, Mary! You made all our lives a little richer.

  • RIP sweet Mary <3

  • Mary was sooooo HOT.Vibrant and 150% woman!Even w.100lbs.later,she could teach many bodyllicious Giselles or Parises how to be sexy with mind, heart & spirit. They did not make many of her kind, even then.

  • God Bless Mary Travers!

  • RIP Mary Travers

  • RIP Mary. You were a one of a kind. You will be missed : (

  • I like Donovan's version of this song better

  • hrdknx, Nothing more boring than dickheads like you commenting on the fact they prefer another version. Nobody cares what you think.

  • hirdyk6: that was quite a harsh response over a mere statement of preference. I was only stating my opinion and not bashing PPM's version. You, like most everyone else on Youtube, like to talk tough and cuss people out for no reason online and say stuff you wouldn't say to them in person. That's just a manifestation of a one dementional (SP?) mind that can't get it through their thick skulls that there's a person on the other end of your comment.

  • if u do a search u can find a black and white video of this song performed live by ppm

  • I DIG Peter Paul and Mary. One of the best singing groups ever. Mary Travers is one of my favorite singers. Best wishes :)

  • Could someone upload the full version, please?

  • Yes...that cut off is exasperating!!

  • ^ This

  • talented - oh hell yeah.

but i thhink they invented the word pretentious.

i love 'em and hate 'em.

  • Hey, I wanted to hear the part where they rip on Donovan, it cuts off just before that. :)

  • is there a video of the entire song - hope so!

  • Comment removed

  • yes ! the vacuous nothing of the Beatles (if you listen to the whole song)...love how Mary mimics (mocks) the sounds of the Mamas and Papas - dont hear this tract on "Oldies" Radio or the Radio period because it condemns commercialized radio (again have to hear the whole song) - heard this once on a folk station great to find it again

  • Kool FM here Phoenix plays this ALL the time.

  • Kool FM! I loved that station. I listened to it every morning and every afternoon commute I had for a year in Phx, but I never heard them play this during those times.

  • Hahaha! Guy on the right looks like Manuel in Fawlty Towers!

  • OMG never noticed that. THAT is funny!

  • Groovy!

  • These three are so into it. Gives me chills. It could be longer. Love Mary's dress. I'm an old hippie and thier songs hit home, in my heart.

  • isn't there more to this video,we need more lol

  • i dig rock n roll music n id like 2 get the chance 2 play and sing it!!!!i thing its about he happiest sound goin down 2daaay! the message may not move me.or mean a great deal 2 me. but hey it feels so groovy 2 saaaaaaay i dig the mama and the papas in the trip suset strip in LA! and wen theyre reallym wailing, michelle and cass r sailing o boy they really nail me 2 the waaaall!!!!!

  • Great live version... anyone know where I can listen to the entire song? It's so good and I'd like to hear the entire thing :O

  • I don't know what you're on but it's not coke or weed. ???

  • 0:41 - 0:47 mmm mmm

  • The guy on the right looks like Manuel in Fawlty Towers!

  • She's fit!

  • omg i always thought the mamas and the papi's wrote/sang this!!

So...did the mama's and papas ever cover it?Does anyone know? =D

  • I'm pretty sure that the mama's and papa's were the cove. PP&M originated the song. I could be wrong.

  • Have never seen or heard this before, MAGIC!!! For pity"s sake post the rest you sod!

  • and by the way, they weren't making fun of the mammas and papas. They were paying a tribute. In the rest of the song they imitate Donovan and the Beatles as people who made beautiful "roak and roll" music.

  • Is there any rock star or singer more beautiful or sexy than Mary in her prime? Her energy and looks added so much to the group. And she always seemed to be sharing a secret with Paul while they were singing in this song and many others.

  • no shit.....you mean in the midst of this dated song...theres a rip on the mammas and the pappas?

  • Well, they really made a big shit on the mamas and the papas. That's why mamas and papas didn't invite them to monterey pop festival. But they get what they needed.

  • are they making fun of the mamma's and the pappa's, thats just horrible. not very peace&love if you ask me. but then again i didnt live back then so maybe it was like friendly poking fun. idk

  • No, not making fun of anybody. I grew up with PP&M. It is just good music for people of any age. Hope you listen to more of them, you'll get the idea!

  • Great to see this, where's the rest?

  • does paul look like jesus with shorter hair?

  • Mary was very, very beautiful.

Too bad the video was cut short.

  • i'm not a record producer or a music manager but don't you think a third microphone would be appropiate instead of getting in the way of the other musician

  • Nor am I, but it seems to force her into physical proximity. This helps her body play off another body.

    I think it worked well.

  • wonderful performance...the energy...the harmony...fantastic...I kind of like this version more than the released one...too bad video was cut off too soon...thank you for posting, slims86...

  • I met with ppm 45 years ago. I got to know how to enjoy the music, and beauty and life from them. And I am one of ppm fans who is continuing seeing them since then. My band covered the music of ppm 40 years ago. If you are interested, please click ID of mine.

and Please listen to "i dig rockn roll music・・・

  • Thanks for posting, stopped too soon.

  • Thanks for posting. Wish it didn't end so abruptly though.

  • Hey! Where is the rest of the clip? There is more to the song than that.

  • That might be Nicholas Cage's real dad.

  • Mary is a prodigy, such strong powerful voice, animated and tireless, pure talent..and she's "el fashionista". Her wardrobe in all their performances perfectly matches her wild groove but classy moves. Simply sophisticated for her generation. But it disturbs me sometimes why she doesnt have her own mic!In the 60s, they cant give her a mic?She sings with her side body facing the audience.

Anybody knows Mary's fashion designer at that time? Or is this Mary's own design? Anyone?

  • I am pretty sure her fashion designer was Peter Max.

  • Who knew Jonathan Winters had a TV show?

  • I did, I'm 47. To play-back stuff like this wasn't even a dream. You either saw them live or played the record. Guess I'm old & in the way.

  • The clip is good, and makes me like them a little more, but I always thought the original song was ridiculous.

  • Mary is just so amazing. Love her voice so much.

  • Hey Mary's in a 'groove'....don't like the up tempo version (at all)...Mary...settle!

  • Hey DanielJGreenJr, I got your point. :) It was just my experience that I had that day. And she did snub me. And many others I saw that day.

  • I gave you that thumbs up. what do any of us know but fly by judgements, especially annonomously ( I need spelling lessons)here on youtube. today you rock. And I am glad you did share your expeirence.

  • What do you mean? When I met her her body was not exactly petite.

  • I didn't mean much. I was being, I don't know what, sexist. I don't want to demean the term. But, in the video she appeared a stereotype of beauty and stereotypical guys don't care about the attitude. None of that is real. Just sterotypes. And the other persons brief encounter wasn't real either. Sure it happened; but what did they learn of Mary and her day. And petite or not, I don't know her character or what real/other people think of her. I was being, a cage rattlet.

  • Paul was so nice when I met him in person!

    Mary was a total...well...I can't say

  • sure, but with a body like that she could be.

  • ok, you're right about their politics, but in 1968 that was mainstream. Mary's dancing is in line with the style of the times.

  • groovy!

  • 1968 was a pivotal year..a transition to the drug culture in music..PP&M stayed conventional.."Like Me older and Wiser"..not influenced byt Timothy Leary or Charlie Manson or Height Ashbury..They sought of peaked by then..Like Elvis..washed up. Times they are a changing..

  • I really like this song - have it on a PP&M greatest hits CD. They are taking the mickey out of the Mammas and Papas and the Beatles for their 'popy' songs that don't mean anything (and as we know PP&M sang about their causes and stuff). However, I like all acts - they're all different. Great video.

  • does anyone know if they were into the drugs of the time? did they even smoke?

  • just acid

  • LOL that's all

  • aaah, we got an insider!

  • There was nothing wrong with a little pot, not then and not now. It's when you become addicted that is the problem. It's legal now if you have cancer.

  • What a brillant idea for PPandM to do this pop song in 1967 after five years of hard folk songs.

  • Hehe I dig rock n' roll music too! And I dig this song!

  • Another live version of this song with youtube code cBdlHRD-KP0

  • MORE! WHY SO SHORT?!

  • would have been nice to have the whole song!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic!!! I see if first time even after years of playing this song...

  • great song -great group

  • dayum...almost like having the big O and then...

close but, no damn cookies :(

that is cold, man!! to quit before you get there

  • That partial clip is on "Carry It On - A Musical Legacy" from 2004. There was no full version of that song.

  • great video-too bad yo didn't post the entire song.

  • mary's so cute... aww, i wish the whole video was here tho!!!

  • Love it, but where's the rest.

Love it. Peter, paul and Mary rock

    *sorry, that was corny*

  • Very good,but I need more!

  • Mary is rockin!!!

  • Chemistry man.. that's what life's all about; work, marriage, friendship, music.. 3 very distinctive talents, adding up to something greater as a group..

  • C'mon, wrong to cut this one short!

  • Is she hot or what?? Awesome band. Love these guys.

  • Full version please!!

  • Their timing is great. I love harmony singing like this. Mary Travers could really nail it when she wanted to.

  • Mary has a voice that can knock you out, and the guys are excellent too. The first time I had ever heard about Bob Dylan was when they released "Blowin' in the Wind". I believe in was on "Today" show they introduced the song as being written by an up and coming young folk singer. They got that one right.

  • Very good. Where is the rest of it?

  • This is my favorite band
