  • not the kind of crowd scene in Forest gump - this is talking about the digital people/stunt doing their own stuff individually, interacting with each other, like fighting, talking, playing, running etc....

  • 0:23 - what did he mean by that: "Matrix, District 9 and Pulp Fiction are not classics? But Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Raiders of the Lost Ark are?"

  • @DemiathDoomhammer I think it means exactly what it says. Classics to you, or one third of a generation (1/3 of 33 years) aren't official classics. Like anything less than 100 years old is not an antique. Definitions include time spans... Do not mistake with marketing hype 'a classic.' as a McDonalds Big Mac could be calle 'a classic.'

  • Only True Lies, Avatar and Titanic?? DUDE, it's a damn shame that you missed T2 in the theater.

  • forest gump used people in the growd with computer before titanic did im sure

  • childrens TV presenters.... can always trust their opinions <_<

  • hmmmmmm

  • brilliant movie i'v ever seen with high def grafics i'd say 4.5 star movie highly recommended to watch this i like to see it over & over but 3D is the best for it.

  • Not sure about all that "noble savage" bullshit,

Perpetuates the idea that hunter-gatherers stay hunter-gatherers because they love nature.

That's probably a lot of bullshit invented by patronising Europeans.

  • @DrunkenPoetic

What "noble savage"? Not one character in film called the Na'vi, "noble." Not ONE. However, the Na'vi have one thing the Native Americans or any other human tribal people never had. The Na'vi can quite literally connect with their environment with their cues (the ponytails). This makes advancement in technology almost unnecessary. So, they literally can be happy with this Eden, so to speak that is called, Pandora while not having to advance in technology. Humans can't do that.

  • "Noble savage" is a phrase from colonialism, relating to a specific worldview. Whether or not the phrase is used directly in Avatar is irrelevant - the ideas BEHIND the phrase are clearly there.

And the film is intended as an allegory. The way the fictional Na'vi relate to their environment is an allegory for the link nomadic humans once had to their surroundings that Cameron believes has been lost in the modern era.

  • @DrunkenPoetic

    You know this how??

  • Most people interpreted the film that way. It's pretty obvious.

  • @DrunkenPoetic

Yeah, the few geeks on the internet, such as IMDb or any other forum related to this movie.

  • We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. No worries.

  • the special effects were amazing, and there was good acting and some decent action, its wqas pleasing to the eye but the story could have benmuch better.

  • These guys are very accurate when they say that Avatar is a technical marvel on par with The Wizard of Oz, 2001 and Star Wars. I mean, I can't imagine anyone showing me a world so in-depth, realistic and beautiful as Pandora. Critics came out when Avatar premiered stating that it felt like stepping into Oz with Dorothy for the first time.

Hate on the characters and story all you want, but that is pretty profound reaction.

  • guy on the right is totally a douchebag.

  • these guys real dumbs . cant even talk..

  • ouchhhh chet how can i upload a video so how this of 1 hour with 10 minutes?

  • Don't bother lobbing nonsense about 'straw men' at me, either. That's always the recourse of those who cannot contest strong, evidential arguments, such as I have given. Anybody who is over the age of 30 has seen D9's themes and tone done better in various other films, such as The Fly and Robocop. Compared to those, D9 is a kiddified treatment. There was no depth to anybody in that film BUT Wikus - everything else is a plot device. Even Wikus' journey has been seen to better effect elsewhere.

  • @gingerbreadface

The strawman was that I was a right-wing racist - baseless ludicrous presumptions of that kind will get you nowhere :)

Maybe you'd link me to that Cameron quote, because all I've seen from him was really treating the film as a serious environmental allegory that would "make people think about the issues". All it does in that regard is ignite discussions about the topics addressed in the movie, because the movie is popular and gets around.

It has nothing to do with...

  • @gingerbreadface

... the way HOW the movie addresses these issues, or what it really has to say on them in terms of content.

It has intelligent people go to forums and post historical facts, and dumb people finding support in the movie for their beliefs how tribal life is better and diseases are all cured by nature.

Anyway, I don't see the purpose behind the phrase "movie for audiences, not for critics" - sure you might not have people with critical thought in mind when making a movie...

  • @twooffour If you thought Avatar was some sort of luddite track then you simply weren't paying attention. It was anything but. Cameron's films have always been thematically pro-technology but with a cautious edge, the pros and pitfalls of progress, and Avatar is no exception. Only crazed right wingers have come up with such a misreading of the film, so my so-called 'straw man' accusations certainly have precedent.

  • @gingerbreadface

... but that still won't prevent people from criticizing anything.

Speaking of racism, Avatar is FULL of (probably unintentional) racist, condescending untertones regarding Jake's role in the alien community - how the white man masters the primitive culture's ways in no time, takes their princess, is marked by their own deity, performs a super feat hardly anyone else could've pulled off, becomes their leader, subtly introduces female anticipation to their mating rituals etc

  • @twooffour Not racist - just realistic. Indigenous populations with primitive technology historically cannot, and have not ,won against technologically superior forces, except in a few isolated cases. Jake's aid is not therefore as a 'white saviour' but a necessity in hedging the Navi's victory against the military with his marine background. The film should not have consented to casting a black actor as the lead just to toe the PC/ equal opportunities line and avoid accusations of this.

  • @gingerbreadface

So you might excuse the "he assumes leadership" part as common sense, but I'm afraid the rest of what I've listed won't stand up to "scrutiny" so easily.

In the end, the subtone still remains. Just as you can excuse the villains' characterization with "well, there are types like this in the military", Quaritch with his stereotypical catchphrases and mannerisms still seems to represent "western military attitude" here (same with the golf-playing(!) selfish Selfridge) and...

  • @gingerbreadface

    ... aftertaste remains.

"Cameron's films have always been thematically pro-technology but with a cautious edge"

Well that's great, I don't remember saying that Avatar was "anti-technology" - all I said was, where the film has the "side-effect" of igniting discussions and inspiring people to educate themselves on the corresponding themes, it also has the "side-effect" of reassuring the dumber folks in their idiotic bullshit.

The film itself is responsible for neither.

  • @gingerbreadface

So as a "message", it can be pretty much thrown out of the window in the end, and what we're left is a movie that will probably cause many people to become interested in the themes addressed through its popularity.

And yea, D9 was full of ridiculous plot devices - the space ship fuel that also turns humans into prawns, weapons inexplicably triggered by "biology", an inexperienced dude using a mech suit with no problem, shady cold government guys, axe-crazy mercenaries...

  • @gingerbreadface

... the alien protagonist having a cute genius kid to ensure sympathy, and so on.

Not exactly a masterpiece of storytelling.

I didn't find the voodoo guy racist, though, because the film constantly shows "normal-acting" (mostly black, I think) citizens in interaction with prawns, and that guy's just the leader of some local bad-ass gang (avoid any generalizations in the racist sense). Still a flat plot device.

What I found racist about it was...

  • @gingerbreadface

... overdoing it with the prawns' "edgy" portrayal - the didn't need to puke around on everyone's feet to drive the point home.

It still managed to make the audience root for the aliens' interests without painting them all in holy pink, and follow the protagonist despite being a selfish ass in an extreme situation.

D9 had a pretty trashy plot, but still didn't go the easiest way possible in order to hook the audience in.

  • D9 was a simplified and racist movie, with a muddled message. It was also nothing more than an X box shooter for the duration of its final half. Only youngsters who haven't read the sci fi classics of literature praise it, simply for its graphic violence. Isn't it telling that real sci fi authors such as Larry Niven praise Avatar (a true sci fi film for the 21st century) while only the younger set praised D9 - probably those who praise The Matrix as original, yet have never even heard of PKD?

  • @gingerbreadface

Well the Matrix was a giant cinematic (and cultural) hommage just as Star Wars, and that's consistent with what their respective authors claimed them to be. So people who praise it as "original" are dumb fanbois.

Anyways... D9 had a huge cinematic advantage to Avatar, that being organic, believable characterization and a far blurrier line between good and evil (as far as government and the protagonist are concerned - obviously, that mercenary guy was just as 1D as Quaritch)

  • @gingerbreadface

I can't say much on D9's political aspects because, quite frankly, I'm not sufficiently familiar with the topics dealt with in that movie, but one thing I can say is you have absolutely no ground to stand on for bashing D9 while praising Avatar for its clichéd, hamfisted and simplistic approach.

  • @twooffour Oh, but I do. Avatar's politics were clear and direct. That goes a long way. D9's politics were muddled and racist, and not because of ambiguity. They went for easy stereotypes, like voodoo worshipping Blacks, and also with very one dimesional bad guys like Wikus' father-in-law and the bald military goon at the end. Avatar was an allegorical myth so it's presentation matches it's intent. D9 had nothing too say and obfuscated its points for cheap thrills.

  • Didnt see it in 3d and it was nothing that great... story comes first PERIOD!!!

  • chatting shit for over half of this

  • too fucking long

  • really fucking long thingi!

  • whats the difference between imax 3-D and normal 3-D ?? :)

  • @ConnorFergusonRules IMAX's screen surrounds you

  • So basically a movie about technology=bad and barbarians=good, that itself hypocritically uses the limits of technology. Nice

  • I saw avatar 3 times i n imax 3-d and now have the movie and watched it 20 times

  • @dragonreviewer1 lol it's just a video... i never watched avatar but i love the word avatards and i hate anything hollywood that is just trying to make a quick buck.. /watch?v=SPL_yfgGfMQ

  • Find me like MrOnverse and see All the videos and the Link to Download The Best 3D game Ever!!

  • Well, the movie that knocked film history on its ass, James Cameron's Avatar will be arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 22nd. It won't be in 3D, which was and is the best way to see it, but you'll have a chance to own this true landmark in film history.

Just FYI, those were more like helicopter lizards than bugs.

  • I saw avatar in 3D yesterday for the second time and i still cant belive some people watch it online i would NEVER in my entire life do that i FULLY recommend to watch it in 3D.

  • @emamincho to watch movie in 3d do we only need 3d glasses or something else except the movie ???

  • @MrFk007 i saw it on the big screen but you can download it in 3D now and enjoy it using 3D glasses. :)

  • @emamincho why would u see it 2 times???Im sorry but alot of people kind of got bored a little the 1st time with its unoriginal and predictable story.the ONLY thing good was the CGI

  • @swartsanager2

Oh, yes. A lot of people, right? That's why Avatar made 2.7 billion dollars worldwide, right?

  • @LukeLovesRose yup. plus all the tickets sold were for 3d showings and that raised the sales. Only reason y it sold well. If it didnt have 3d it wouldve sold like just $800 million.

  • @swartsanager2

Um, I hate to break this to you, but Avatar rose up to become even more popular than Raiders of the Lost Ark. It sold more tickets than Raiders. It is now the 14th most popular film ever made.

By the way, Cameron's other masterpiece, Titanic happens to be the 6th most popular film ever made.

  • @LukeLovesRose wait what? i dndt say anything about raiders of the lost ark. And yes I know how popular this film is but my personal opinion is that i dont think it deserves it. just sayin.

  • @swartsanager2

No, I know you didn't say anything about Raiders. But, for the longest time, Raiders was hailed as the 'greatest adventure film ever made'. I think its about time another film, a somewhat smarter and more important film take that title.

I do think Avatar deserves its popularity and its praise. That's why I'm standing up for it, despite the fact that I don't really have to.

  • agree with avatar review. completely blew me away. instant classic.

  • 1 hour : 0 !

  • not to be mean but i think these guys are gay literally in real life i think they are gay

  • this is strange... 1:10:26!

  • @TheAvidThinker hey man don't get your panties in a bunch.. i was just trying to make you laugh at how much of a avatard you are.

  • @GravDiga quit trolling please

  • @TheAvidThinker I'm not trolling.. i'm just trying to educate you on how horrible Avatar is.. it's not like it's original.. anyone could have thought up that story.. if you want a original story .. i suspect district 9 is way better as a story and movie :D

  • @GravDiga AHAHAHAHAHH!!!

  • @TheAvidThinke ya cause u LOVE CGI packed films

  • @swartsanager2 yes.. yes i do.

  • @TheAvidThinker The Matrix 1999 was WAAAYYY fucking better. Avatar is not as good and overrated.

  • @Thebestever441 well of course its better, matrix has a better story and everything, i just really enjoyed avatar as well.

  • @TheAvidThinker Yeah avatar is cool. But for a few weeks I forgot I watched it 4 times in theaters.

  • @Thebestever441

Sounds exactly like the crap Titanic received just after its initial run. But... Titanic is making quite an awesome comeback now.

  • amazing review for super awesome movie, everything they talked about the movie is so true. watched the movie in 3D, the movie's realistic cgi effects were mind blowing, i felt as though such place exist. 'm definitely gonna watch it again.

  • co !!!! 1 godz żal

  • It's nice to see some intelligent discussion of Avatar on a technical level. It's interesting that no one talks about it on a spiritual level. Only a few talk about it on a political level.

A reviewer in either the NYT or the Wall Street Journal felt that it was a political flashback to Vietnam. That was there a little bit but the real parallel is found in the Native American/settler conflict during the 19th Century. I agree it's trul;y a classic. Five stars.

  • spot on review about avatar.. my opinion exactly

  • Can anyone tell me which song is that at the beginning of the video?

  • might be the longest video i've ever seen on YouTube! damn! 1 hour 10!

  • Comment removed

  • i totally agree with alex's point of veiw, i had the same scepticisim going into this movie, lol and i also wish James Camern hand his say in every other sci-fi movie from now on.

  • Would be great to talk about the scientis background :D

  • Great movie !! Great critics !! but they sadly forget talk the influence of "Discovery Channel Alien Planets" which is original and great work as well they probably have deeply knowledge in movies but should have to take a look on documentaries too I mean bioluminiscense all around, more complexity in fauna and flora, this work really feeds the movie on any creative aspect

  • I loved Avatar. I thought many other films this year were great too like Star Trek and District 9, but Avatar just exceeded not only in the visuals (which I thought were also great in the previous 2 films mentioned), but in the overall emotion and the way the story was executed. I felt much more attached to the characters and I really felt like I was transported to another world. Never have special effect been used this way to completely transport us to another world. Best film of 2009 bar none

  • totally agree, the special effect are so amazing.

  • District 9 is a CLASSIC!!!

  • get on with the fucking review lmao

  • super......

  • Yeah, and pay more than you would at a Theatre.

  • This discrases avatar's wonderful world

  • At long last, after years of sitting virtually alone in huge IMAX-GT theatres watching documentaries, I knew what 3D was about and was more than ready for AVATAR. Although ground-breaking in many ways I have seen much better 3D in other films. What really disappointed me was, although the visuals were 3D the story and dialogue could only manage to be 1/2D. What a shame Cameron had to dumb the whole thing down to sub-Titanic level. Too much money - no imagination.

  • Totally 100% agree with you guys on everything you say about Avatar

  • so u guys are experts in movie making more than any one on the earth

  • They forgot to mention "Bladerunner"

  • how do you watch it it keeps having you answer serveys

  • Middle age guys saying "totally hardcore awesome!!"

    Can't deal with this...

  • The part where you described tearing up because of the triumph....I felt that too, it happened to me man. I am so glad you guys liked it and I wish the movie so much wellness in the world it was truly incredible. I saw the midnight opening showing of it and I'll be seeing it a few more times for sure.

  • as they say, they were just overwelmed by a success-story! these dirty american bastards!

  • 3 gay guys who think they are funny

  • boo

  • This movie looks good/fun...but come on, real it in a bit guys (reviewers). Jesus.

  • saw the film 2day.. was "THE BEST movies iv every sceen." i saw it in imax 3d was amazin

    10/10

  • Comment removed

  • great review guys. exactly how i feel.

  • You people are acting like we've had the most original stories in movies lately. We've had nothing but remakes, re-imaginings, and adaptations of other peoples' great work. Let's not kid ourselves that it is possible to invent an entirely new story from scratch in this day and age. Everything is inspired by something before it.

    About this video....

I love this review and I can't wait to see the film.

  • ´Best sci-fi movies I've ever seen?´

Are these guys critics, or paid actors?

This is a fairy tale with some nice visuals.

Another ´Star Trek´-aliens movie with no credible astrobiology.

You cant mention this movie along with some great ones as 2001: A Space Odyssey.

  • Best review of avatar...you guys are from pandora..thanks

  • best review of Avatar.

  • you guys rock...i love you!

  • Totally spot on with the dream sequences.

  • Furthermore, it's telling that Distict 9 and The Matrix were mentioned. Neither of those sci-fi tales were original or complicated. They were heavily plundered and derivative of previous works. Only kids who don't know much think they were 'cutting edge'. And fianlly, no one is getting 'paid' to shill Avatar. it really is that good. I've already seen it. Phenomenal marriage of cutting edge technology and a relevant and emotional story. Believe the hype.

  • D9 may not have been complicated, but it was definitely original. Spare me the Alien Nation similiarities, how many sci-fi films have had an effective allegory for aparthied? Better yet, how many sci-fi ACTION films have effectively pulled that off? D9 may have became a typical shoot-em-up in its third act, but Blomkamp can shoot dazzling action sequences.

D9 was pretty damn great, near perfect, IMO.

  • The Matrix wasn't complicated?

Obviously, you didn't get the movie, and you just taken it for a generic action movie.

The Matrix is ridiculously deep, not so much District 89, but the Matrix doesn't have better effects than Avatar, but it's much deeper, and a more rewarding experience.

  • lol.. riiiiiight.. and maybe I'm a chinese jet pilot. The only thing 'deep' about the Matrix movies was how 'deep' Zion was underground.. ok, two things were deep.. the other was how deep Neo went inside of Trinity in the sex scene.

  • The Matrix was only deep to 13 year old boys who haven't read any Philip K Dick!

  • @gingerbreadface

    LOL sooo true :)

  • @gingerbreadface

I really love how you dismiss District 9 (and the Matrix) in that snobby manner, and yet praise the "relevant and emotional story" in Avatar.

    .... what??

No... it wasn't "relevant" (rather dumbing down relevant real-life issues), and the emotions portrayed there aren't particularly interesting and one-dimensional.

If anything, the "emotions" and behavior Wikus from D9 goes through in reaction to the things happening to him are incomparably more interesting, ...

  • @gingerbreadface

    ... psyhological and better acted.

Yea, they're the "same archetypes"... well, maybe they shouldn't have relied on archetypes, stereotypes and one-dimensional stock characters in order to preach about real-life political issues?

Anyway, being archetypal doesn't make the characters better in any way, and they aren't particularly good.

  • @twooffour archetypes and stereotypes are two completely different things: One implies awareness by the artist of what he is creating; the other does not. I can assure you that Cameron fully intended to create a universal, archeypal world myth in the vein of the original Star Wars, and he succeeded superbly. The characters were fantastic also: Quaritch was the best genre villain seen in many years, and Neytiri was another strong female character in Cameron's lineage.

  • @gingerbreadface

Yea, and they were also stereotypes - Selfridge has an annoying laugh, a smug attitude, and plays golf: he's the "corporate douchebag" stereotype.

Quaritch speaks with a southern-ish accent, has a bunch of scars, shoots off one evil "R&R in Hell" and "hard to keep strong" catchphrase after another, and is generally a huge racist scumbag.

The Navis themselves a huge "indigenous tribe" stereotype with pretty much each aspect of their appearence, behavior and...

  • @gingerbreadface

    ... and mentality.

Peaceful... nature-loving... (rightfully) spiritual... will discuss whether they'll scalp, err, kill you while binding you to a pole, but ultimately no harm to the heroes... etc.

Then we've got the "quirky funny science nerd guy" working for Grace, the sympathetic marine with integrity who doesn't take shit (man, was THAT a flat, nonsensical plot device of a character), that one exaggeratedly aggressive jealous warrior guy who doesn't like the...

  • @gingerbreadface

    ... newcomer... and stuff.

All those characters in the movie are completely flat, one-dimensional and comprised of clichés, which makes inducing emotions and telling a story / conveying whatever message the writer intended, extremely easy. While contributing next to nothing to the corresponding real world issues (i.e. instead of dealing with the scientific ambiguity, he just has the arrogant corporate douche ignore definitive scientific data).

    I really don't see why...

  • @gingerbreadface

... we should praise Cameron for going down that road.

"the film could be enjoyed as an action adventure first and foremost."

You can if you want, but that's not what the movie is, and not how Cameron intended it to be.

Also with that attitude, anything political or otherwise resemblant of any sort of "message" is automatically lost.

Righteous sure, but also extremely dumbed down and extremely pretentious while contributing next to nothing to the actual real-life...

  • @twooffour Incorrect. Cameron has EXPLICITLY stated elsewhere that he was created a film for audiences, a pulp space opera/ jungle adventure like John Carter of Mars, not a film for critics or a polemic.

As for contributing 'nothing': the film has already sparked numerous, tangible discussion across the globe, particularly in the far east and in south america. This is indisputable. D9 can make no such claims ;indeed, it was roundly criticized in its native SA.

  • @gingerbreadface

    ... issues intellectually.

And yea, keep them coming, the strawmen - that'll win you any debate.

  • @twooffour As for the politics - they were not blatant, since the film could be enjoyed as an action adventure first and foremost. They were also indisputably righteous and historically true. Only right wingers could feign disgust at them, since it forces them to confront their own history of blood, xenophobia, and greed. I presume you are one of their stock , also?

  • don't be an ignorant ass. Avatar does not have a 'lazy story' - it has an extremely well done story. That has inarguably been pointed out throughout all reviews. The same story archetypes have been told again and again throughout history. Most people don't have a clue about what's original or good storytelling. These guys know what they're talking about.

  • are they getting paid to say that 0.o

i mean why not buy all major review guys.

  • "I think it's probably one of the best, if not the best sci-fi movies I've ever seen."

"Is the story the best story ever told? No."

"At the end of the day, it's just sort of a generic sci-fi thing. You know, bad people want to make money."

If that's the best sci-fi he's ever seen, he hasn't seen much sci-fi.

It's got special effects! We get it already! That's no substitute for lazy storytelling.

  • AVATAR! Greatest film ever!

  • what dan says at 21:30 is what a lot of people have been saying about this movie for years.

  • great intro

  • Great Avatar review. I always anticipate especially Jeff's review.

  • Also, I have to add.. IMHO, Vanilla Sky has the hands down best "dream" sequence of all time...

  • I'm really surprised the movie turned out as majorly epic as has been purported! I was really thinking it would fall short.

In the previews, the CGI of all the mechanical things seems 100% real, but honestly, the blue aliens don't look like "real" actual beings.

I'm going to see this in IMAX 3D this saturday, so maybe it *will* look real in eye-popping IMAX 3D. All I can say is I hope I eat my words after watching it...

    Awesome review guys..

  • Dont get me wrong i like good stories but at the same time i like being highly entertained. Im not a big fan of deep shit. Im not spending money at the movies for deep smarty arty shit. Thats just not me, i'd rather wait til it hits dvd or something. But this movie im goin to see because i know its gonna entertain the hell outta me.

  • Decent plot with, amazingly new graphics?

  • love this show

  • You lose 5 internets, sir.

  • you guys prove to me that the geek shall inherit the earth

  • I love it when Jeff gets passionate about something, I guess it says something about Avatar :P

  • hasn't even come out yet
