My high school choir is singing this (I'm a freshman bass) and at first my brother and I (he's a junior and also a bass) hated this song but now I'm like falling in love with it I love this song
my choir sang this under the dome at the cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. It was the week of the VT massacre and my school is from that area. this song always brings me to tears. thanks for doing such a great job and bringing back wonderful memories
The DHS chorus is working on this song right now (technically we're trying to perfect it) and it sounds utterly AMAZING. I've got to be honest, I do believe we top these people 10x over ^_^

I hate the conductor, he's not doing good at all, but I like the choir they are good, and my school (Fort Hayes, Which is in Ohio) we dd this and we did it great. ^.^ Flawless song
Actually, the conductor is doing a fantastic job. Even if you disagree, there is no reason to "hate" anyone. Also, the rules of grammar: look into them. Please.
@sanyway27 actually, if you're going to lecture on grammar, you should not insert a colon without introducing it first; such as "We will be singing the following songs:" Use "the following" or "as follows." Basically warn the reader that a colon is coming up.
The comment about the group using sheet music during their performance was made a long time ago. I really like this song, so please just drop it. I know they are not cheating , it was a joke. I've seen more groups sing this piece without having the sheet music right there.
Yes this is a fact. My son memorized everything for their performances, but he was in Men's chorus and chamber every day. As an adult in a volunteer choir, we rehearse on Thursday nights, big difference. 10 hours of practice compared to 2 1/2. We memorize bits, but never entire pieces of music.
Not to sound mean but why do the old people get to have the music in front of them. We had to memorizes it and sing it by heart. It was still very good but their cheating.
Pacing is too slow for my taste. Generally, I like the pace of numbers of this kind a little slower, both with solo recitalists and choral, so the singer(s) can linger and have more effect, but that doesn't seem to be the case here, at least for me. This is one of the very best choral anthems written in the 22nd half of the 20th century. I have sung it myself with two choral groups and our church choir and I have met Daniel Gawthrop, when he was attending a premier of one of his choral works.
I really like this song and back during my high school years, our high school choir (which I was in, I was an alto) actually sang this for a fellow student's funeral so it does bring some very somber memories, but a very beautiful song indeed.
It's nice to hear adults do this song. I've been listening to all the high school choirs on here do it, and they just can't compete with mature voices. Sorry!
I did this song for a solo and ensemble. It was a small group out of my chamber choir... I carried the alto part alone... it was the best i've ever heard to be honest. there were two girls doing soprano and when it splits it was basically 1 person on a part and then we had our tenors and such all in all about 7 of us? if that maybe only 6. We placed superior twice but for some reason didn't quite get to go to allstate. oh well. lol this song is beautiful. Sounds better slowed. NOT sped up
we did this in our fall concert at my high school in our select group that contains about 16 students, and it sounded really good. we sing it all the time now. it sounds really great guys! keep up the work!!
This is one of the toughest pieces in choral music. Eric Whitacre's being number 1. lol. You guys did amazing, just watch your "A" vowel and at "sing me to heaven" the 1st the sopranos were a little sharp! But this is one of the best Ive heard of this piece! Great job!
I performed this piece with the NC United Methodist Youth Choir back in 1995. I lost the music, and just found this on here. Thanks for posting this, it brings back very good memories
I love this song, but i like open vowels, which i saw most of the time, but some of the vowels were not open enough to make the performance perfect, but it did go quite well, i applaude you!

Our Minnesingers Choir sung this my senior year back in 1995...lol seems so long ago but We did a concert at Carnegie Hall and to help us get there we had a concert in Dallas to raise funds..this was our closing number Beautiful lyrics and beautiful chords ..dissonance is the core of this piece...coupled with the lyrics makes beautiful music
Out of all the pieces my treble choir sung during senior year this one was my favorite and will always be. Its haunting and melancholy and listening to it gives me the chills.
my highschool chamber singers did this... actually we rocked this!!! a man by the name of Todd Schrowder got us in to capital records in hollywood and we got to record this song!!!! we are amazing i wish i had a video of us singing it.....
even though this choir sang it alittle faster than us i still love it....itz just more emotional when itz slower and more touching in my personal opioion
beautiful piece of music this one.....we are doing this song two more times in front of a live audience so it'll make four....at the end of the song i always come very close to crying...itz so moving.....espically because there's a girl in my choir that i like...itz hard to explain but a moveable piece
This piece will always hold a very dear place in my heart. Did it on two different occasions in high school concert choir. Definitely a special piece.
Beautiful, though the best I've ever heard it is still when the St. Olaf Choir did it on NPR's Performance Today a while back. It's still available for listening online.
i want it played at my wedding. i sang this my senior year of high school for UIL and i've never been able to forget it. this is my 7th year to be in a choir [middle school, high school & college] and its the only piece that really touched me.
I am in high school and i just had a concert yesterday and we sang this piece. It was my favorite piece of the night. You guys sing this amazingly. When i hear this done right i get chills and i got them so many times listening to this. Great job.
