  • Ummm... that's nuthin' but pure quality all-round! Always been a huge fan of TIm... and Jerry... a very special "benchmark" performance here. Thanks!

  • Whats Bricktop doing there? He plays a mean Dobro when he's not feeding people to pigs and such

  • This is one of my new favorite song, Jerry Douglas has an awesome voice, and is one of my favorite dobro players.

  • I got to do sound for Tim a few weeks ago. I have no doubt that I've done my best gig ever! Someone said on another post taht these guys were school boys compared to Jimi Hendrix. I beg their pardon, maybe the other way around. Yeah, I know maybe apples to oranges.....but to me there's not another better vocalist on the planet!!!

  • @sharpsound2011 --i really enjoy playing this song on hammered dulcimer-it's great!! plus my sis works in a stock yard....lol-

  • i'm loving the nod tim gives douglas at 0:50. lol epic stuff

  • McLovin on Bass!

  • Is that Bricktop playing the dobro?

  • Anybody know what kind of guitar Russ Barenburg is playing? Looks familiar, but I can't place it. He played a '76 HD-28 for years, then a Gibson slope-shouldered something, plays a D-18 sometimes. I've never seen this one.

  • @inky960 I think it's the Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500M.

  • i'm still working on the bass part-i know its e & b & a, its funny he's playing low e & b, but i would have played it high e and b....cute how alli brings that note up on the fiddle-thats what made them laugh

  • its four flats, and five flats--thats the only way i can describe it-my music theory ain't so great-but my ear is good, i haven't found anything i can't play yet

  • anyone now chords???????????????????

  • @CGiordano464 yeah, i know the chords-let me work on it, i'll let you know what they are

  • @CGiordano464 they played it in the four flat key-e,/g-a&d-e flat, or simpler version, E major

  • @CGiordano464 -E major key

  • @rainharper62 ok will try it out. same chords thorughout chorus n stuff?

  • @CGiordano464 , hey, yeah, pretty much, its the same chords we use playing church music-you know the key signature w/four flats?..then there's a Bb major chord in there& a Bminor--but you know if your singing it, everyone has a key thats easy for them to sing in--you need to use the key that you can sing it in-If your planning on singing it, then when you get to the chorus there's five flats& then there's an A flat chord in there too-if your playing guitar, get someone to help you

  • fuckin awesome tune

  • lol....in the famous words of Bela Fleck "i feel really good about my voice, especially since i starting singing with Jerry".....i bout lost it when he said that

  • Great noise

  • What I wouldn't give to be able to play and sing so effortlessly as these artists....and Flux seems to be having a really good time!

  • sing it flux!

  • Flux singing the tenor part!!!!!!

  • It doesn't get any better! Saw Tim O'Brien at Station Inn in Nashville. True talent and never a nicer guy.

    grazininthegrassLu

  • Man! This is so good. Woohoo!

  • Good news.

Transatlantic Sessions Series 4 starts TV transmission on BBC 2 Scotland (only) on Sunday 13 September 2009 at 22:50 BST (CD and DVD will follow).

  • hey can anyone post tims song Late in the day from when he was with hot rize. love that song thanks

  • can't get this on itunes for some reason...

  • @canyongirl60 this song is availiable on Tim's album "fiddlers Green."

  • ............

  • good morning

  • Tim O'Brien. In Westminster, Maryland! July 12th at the Farm Museum. And Ralph Stanley on the same stage the day before!

  • Douglas is Superb (of course, they All are). He doesn't 'overplay', and the licks are always in good taste.

And what else is there to say about Tim O'Brian that hasn't already been said - He's truly in a class by himself,

    Just nice stuff!

  • Love Jerry on dobro there! He's the best.

  • i love tim obrien, hes my cousin

  • What a great song. For those of you that liked it check out Tim's album "Fiddler's Green". The whole thing is incredible. Definitely one of his best.

  • Where can I find Tim O'Brien singing walk the way the wind blows?

  • its on the Hot Rize live album "so long of a journey"

  • I love this! thanks for posting. never heard of tim o'brien before, but now I'm hooked. exactly the kind of music I've been looking to get into.

  • Wow never heard of Tim OBrien before and of course being hooked is like finding the bluegrass beatles and never heard of them. Enjoy and check out his HOt RIZE stuff. What a writer.

  • what a song..can anyone tell me who is playing guitar to the left of tim o brien. i think i have seen him also play with union station am i right..or was i dreaming....

  • It's Russ Barenberg. (Click on "More Info" above for the full roster of players.) Thanks to you, tomtscotland, for posting these and for posting the details about the session members.

PS Ovation TV played Transatlantic Sessions 2 yesterday (about 6 or more 30-min episodes!) I hope they'll play series 3 soon, but 2 has some wonderful stuff too!

  • Thanks for your comments.

If you can't wait for series 3 - it is a available on DVD.

  • I will take your suggestion and order the DVD; much better to enjoy these sessions without all the commercial breaks, anyhow! You really are in Scotland, aren't you? If so, I hope you'll be seeing at least 1 Tim O'Brien gig in the next couple of weeks. I've been to the Carrying Stream festival at the Pleasance in Edinburgh & I think it's a nice intimate venue.

  • Thanks - Ill check where he is playing.

I saw Tim in January (and a lot of the other artists from TS3) at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall - it was fantastic!

You won't be dissappointed with DVD - the sound and picture quality is brilliant!

  • If you're talking about the man to your left of Tim O'Brien, you're right. That's Jerry Douglas playing the squareneck resonator guitar (dobro). He does play dobro with Alison Krauss & Union Station, and has for about 10 years now.

  • wonderful music to my ears great picking thanks for posting this vid:)

  • SOME CLOWN MENTIONED chris thile IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH WITH FLUX AND TIM O'B..AIN'T THAT HELL...

  • mandolins freekin rule

  • FLUX SINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is a Tim O'Brien / Jerry Douglas song called "Things In Life" that begins, strangely enough: "Look up, look down that lonesome road"

So I thought this song was that. I like this song. Does anyone have "Things in Life", and if so, would you please post it? Thanks!

  • that's a don stover tune.

  • Is it just me or does Tim look like Danny Kaye?

  • It's just you!! lol No, really, I love Tim and I love Danny Kaye, and I just watched "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "The Court Jester" over the past weekend (loved to see Danny trading rapid patter with Basil Rathbone!) Anyhow I can see a certain resemblance, especially in the thick red wavy hair, general coloring, and nice smile! And perhaps the nose, a bit. :)

  • Awesome, and this is the first time I ever saw Jerry sing.

  • I feel like Ren and Stimpy

  • Too good !!!!

  • great man Tim is...considering he is from my hometown, Jerry Douglass is the man for dobro playing, and nobody beats Tim at Fiddle and Mandolin...except maybe Bill Monroe

  • You've gotta hear Bela Fleck before you say that!

Problem is you can't go wrong with any of them. Good problem.

  • cheese

  • How about Chris Thile? If you mean fiddle AND Mando, then fair enough, but fiddle OR mandolin; Chris Thile on Mando for my money. That aside, how great is this song? And Tim's voice is beautiful! btw,I agree Douglas every day of the week for dobro. The guy's not human!

  • wow you sound so ignorant...I like a lot of other mandolin players better then Thile but you can't deny his talent...who cares if it's not traditional bluegrass...so are you saying mandolin players are only allowed to play traditional bluegrass...give me a break...Grisman Bush Marshall and countless others that don't fit into your tight box of what bluegrass should be have all contributed so much and influenced so many...open your mind and appreciate good music period whatever category it may be

  • oh no you called me a jerk...I'm crushed...it's obvious you know nothing about music if you think he has no talent...and since you have brought no logical points and only your hate to this argument I'm done with you

  • and you're one of the things that's wrong with this country and the human race for that matter...I'll refrain from saying anything mean about cops or otherwise...peace and love...lose the hate

  • best wishes to you phriendlyphool..i am sure that you are a terrific person...

  • JERRY DOUGLAS IS THE MAN!

  • this is just SOOOO damn good!!!!!!!

thanks for posting this gem Tom

  • I can't stop smiling!

  • They say whiskey slows you down and clouds up your thinkin

But as long as they make whiskey I'd say we'll keep on drinkin

well,It aint slowed down a thing,I am converted,

  • ... just GREEEAT !!! : D
