Back in the 80's, I used to work beside the Old Firehall Theatre in Toronto. SCTV was in it's prime then. I would go and watch them do Improv on Thursday nights (free entry). The theatre has since been torn down.
@hfelton I bet Catherine O'hara did. Turns out she's the one who came up with lyrics to a lot of those copyright-free tunes, like Baby Baby I'm so sorry Boo Hoo Hoo. She's quite musical.
i just love how SCTV put everything into their skits despite a low budget. the writing of this song, the rehearsal, timing and the camera fade outs like they used to do.
Oh, this had me laughing out loud. Thank you so much for posting this gem.
Now if I could only find the one where Andrea Martin is Nana Mouskouri, which she did on one of the final SCTV's that aired in the spring of '82. The premice was that Nana has a new musical director who wants to make her act more edgy, so in each new city she appears, she's wearing a more outrageous pair of glasses-the last being one of those jokeshop glasses with the plastic eyeballs going back 'n forth with springs
"Your breath's so bad, and your B.O.'s quite offensive--soap and water's not expensive..."
The whole thing is BRILLIANT!! SCTV, once again, has made me LMAO!!!! SNL never, ever made me laugh as hard as I did at SCTV--even during the Belushi years.
I really love this. Thank you so much for posting it. I'm watching all the SCTV dvds now and having a great time doing it. The show just seems to get better and better as the years go by.
Back in the late '70s, SNL was 90 minutes packed with comedy. Now there's a commercial after every two skits, sometimes after only one. I cannot get into it. Luckily SCTV was on PBS in the mid to late '80s...commercial free. I deem it superior sketch comedy. The recurring theme of the TV station was a great idea. Thank you, Second City.
SNL was great up until now. Now it's garbage, because the all funniest people are gone like Will Ferrel, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Jimmy Fallon ect. I've never watched SCTV until now and it is hilarious. Canada has the funniest people. I can't believe how many famous faces were on this show. Really cool.
Yeah I agree SNL is not even close and I love the cast of SNL in movies however , but I never ever found any of them funny on SNL. Strange as they are so funny in films.
This is one of the first shows I ever videotaped. Didn't like Maudlin or Bittman, but this Steve and Eydie was hilarious. I've got some old stuff I don't see anywhere on the Ytube, I'll have to upload it, SCTV was the BEST. SNL is nothing in comparison.
OMG every line a winner...Hilarious, did you notice the same two (Dave Thomas and Catherine Ohara) were right behind Sammy answering phones at the beginning as Captain Kangaroo and Lola Heatherton.
OMG every line a winner...Hilarious, did you notice the same two (Dave Thomas and Catherine Ohara) were right behind Sammy answering phones at the beginning as Captain Kangaroo and Lola Heatherton.
SNL only had a few moments as good as this one, and they mostly included Steve Martin or Eddie Murphy. It's amazing that SNL still stumbles along while Kids in the Hall, SCTV, and Fridays failed.
Interestingly, both Ms. O'Hara and Mr. Thomas have relatives who have had varying degrees of success in the Canadian music industry. (Catherine's sister is singer/songwriter Mary Margaret O'Hara; Dave's brother is Ian Thomas.)
@TheDevindevin I agree.. HOWEVER, don't forget that in SCTV's last season, it seemed like they were intentionally trying to kill the show. They had that talentless Tony Rosato, and some woman I can't recall, and every week they used at least half the show for that stupid, unfunny "Days Of The Week".
I just thought it was interesting that someone picked up on that as well. You're right the name was captain combat. I do some film editing for a project that I'm working on so I couldn't help but notice. Do you remember Mrs. Felbows tiny town with Andrea Martin? If so, do you think you could post the video, please? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
@Kellygump1, I suppose kelly you've never heard of Mrs. Felbows tiny town then? Do you remember the mayor of Melonville? Or maybe you'd remember who played Ethel Merman? How bout Edith Prickley? Or Carl Sagan? Weren't they funny? Do you remember who played those people? Oh, and then there's Guy Caballero remember who played that?
I think they were just as talented if not more so than the SNL players. In fact going back to this doesn't seem stale like SNL.I'd say they inspired me to be a working comic more than anyone else except of course python.
These are TIMELESS classics ... My Brother and I have been laughing at this since we were kids .... I still love Catherine O'Hara's and Dave Thomas' works even today. LoL LoL !!!!

@phhyatt It is very similar at least to You Hit The Spot, which was sung by Vicki Lane. This is a classic...as is most of SCTV!
