His voice was definitely enhanced in some way for the DVD - he didn't sing with that much ooomph live! Strained voice, strained face, poor acting - completely spoils the 25th for me.
Nick was a better Marius than I thought that he would have been. I am glad he played this part and not the part or Garbrosh like he did when he was younger or I would have been bawling. Maybe someday he will play the part of Valjahn. That would be cool! I hope that he plays the part in a Disney broadway show like maybe Aladdin, Prince Eric or the Beast someday!
I think the kid did a good job. No, he's no Michael Ball, but he performed well. Besides, I always thought Michael Ball's voice was a bit mature for the young, soft-spoken Marius. And, before I am accused of being somecrazed teenie bopper Jonas fan, count me with the over 40 crowd. The kid held his own and I really liked him as Marius.
I don't care who he is. That performance did not meet the quality I have come to expect from Les Miz. I have seen the show 8 times. His performance here ranks below them all. His acting is below par and the emotion doesn't come close to what is needed. Les Miz is such a great show that you don't need his name as a draw. A disservice to all Les Miz fans.
Not bad. I don't really like the Jonas brothers, and I will give him credit for getting up there and doing this, but he is out of his league in Les Miserables.
It's as though you're trashing the 10th Anniversary Concert by even releasing this CRAP. This is HORRIBLE! My introduction to this MASTERPIECE was thru repeated viewings ( during a PBS pledge drive ) of Great Performances. I've since gone on to see several "live" productions when they toured, I've gotten to see Lea Salonga perform last year, and.........I will accept no less than Quast as Javert. What next?...Justin Bieber as Fantine? As dumb as trying to remake Casablanca. SHAME!
People need to learn to stop comparing him to Michael Ball, it's so unfair...WE KNOW nobody will ever compare to Michael's performance. Take it for what it is...he hasn't done any Broadway singing since he was 10 plus his voice is naturally very soft that is why it would often be drowned out in chorus. Cameron Macintosh approached him and gave him this opportunity and personally I think he did incredible. :) This sounds amazing. So proud of him.
If Cameron didn't think Nick was capable, he wouldn't have cast him. He's not about to put his stellar reputation on the line just to sell a few more tickets. But it didn't hurt that Nick brought a whole new audience in for the NEXT 25 years of Les Mis.
he doesent even sound like the same person anymore! i swear i had to restart this like 5 times to see if he was lip singing or not i was thinking some one else was singing it for him!!!
@katherinexo2009 He isn't lip syncing because that wouldn't be allowed in the theater :) He'd probably get eggs thrown at him :) Lol. I was surprised myself when I first heard him sing this song :)
@gags24601 Are you kidding? I mean I am a big fan of Nick but I am no biased person. He was better at this solo rather than the ones where he duets with Ramin Karimloo who totally kind of over powers EVERYONE else. Aside from that, critics say that he did okay in the duets and chorus but his most outstanding performance of the night was Empty Chairs :)
you guys who critizies (sorry if I spelled it wrong) why do you comment this video if you guys have nothing sweet to say about nick? It's just evil to compare Nick with Micheal Ball because Micheal is the best Marius ever! But Nick has an amazing voice and I think he did an amazing job playing Marius! If he was a bad singer then why did he get the role in the first place?
@lalitamoonbeam16 comparing ANY actor playing Marius to Michael BALL (no "s") is not fair AT ALL. Michael set the bar very high with his performance and as such is difficult to follow.
@lalitamoonbeam16 Before you even say he's crap, learn how to spell BALL correctly. He's name is MICHAEL BALL and not Michael Balls. Besides, no one ever in the history will ever beat Michael Ball because he's the original one and by far my most favorite Marius. I love Les Mis because of my parents and Lea Salonga *whom I really adore* Honestly, Nick was only the icing on top of the cake that made it better fo rme but I love it :)
@philliprjohn I fully understand he's not nearly as good vocally, but why does he LOOK out of depth? Marius is very young, why does everyone ignore that?
In my personal opinon, he's really good. It's just that there's no one, as far as I am concerned that will live up to Michael Ball.
I am happy that Nick actually introduced this musical to a whole younger audience. I am not speaking as a Jonas fan because I grew up listening to the 10th anniversary because of my parents. I really love this musical and I was even happier when I found out Nick was going to be in it :)
@LankySpotlighter93 search for killian donnelly. i thought gareth was the smartest choice for the huge o2 event, til fans gave feedback on the outstanding donnelly.
@hpmusicluvers On the best buy website it shows this coming out in the US on Feb 22 I believe. I have not found anything on the soundtrack yet but hopefully that comes out before or around the same time. I can't imagine them not releasing it.
@mikki1101 It's unlikely there will be a CAST RECORDING (soundtracks are for film, this would be a cast recording since it's a stage show). There is a 2010 Cast recording of the Touring Production, so it doesn't seem likely another cd would come out from the same time frame.
nick jonas was amazing in this film. he really take the air out of me. i felt like my heart has stop because he was just that amazing my Dream husband:)<3 so proud of Nick what is doing with his life<3 i am soo going to gett this on Dvd. he was amazing<33
He's alright, actually. I'm just wondering, why the awful British accent? If you're an American playing a French character, why bother doing a British accent, especially if you can't?
ok obviously michael ball is gonna beat nick..mainly because he's the original and trained for this..
this is nick's first time singing like this and he does a really good job of it. are there people that are better? yes, because they trained longer, but nick does know the show he was in the final broadway cast (in the original run) for crying out loud!!
so don't say that he sucks, or don't go all gaga over him and just get the dvd because he's in it. there's many amazing cast members as well.
@khanhdan Well I am sorry to tell you that even if you have the ablility to sing it, which apparently Nick has, it still does not mean you don't need year of training. The only reason why Nick was traliling behind the rest of the cast members is because he has not done any formal training like the others did.
If ABLILITY is the only thing needed, then ask the other perfomers why they needed training too. Does that mean they don't have the ablity just because they had training?
@TheJonasEmpire The planning for this concert apparently started well over a year before the actual performance -- Alfie Boe said in an interview he had been approached over a year before to play the role. Once he knew he was in the running, he should have started training with someone familiar with musical theatre-style singing. No one here has any way of knowing exactly what kind of training he went through before the concert.
While his "Empty Chairs" sounded fine, whenever he sang with others (i.e. in the first act) his voice was overtaken by his fellow performers, and as such, it was difficult to hear him.
@khanhdan Ability will only apply if you had 1. Training, 2. Effort and 3. Talent. All of that applies to EVERY single cast memebers. The only thing different is that the others has been training for this kind of music all their life and Nick only had weeks. If you look at his performance it was great. Not as great as the others but considering his LACK OF TRAINING, he's doing fine. Before you talk, please be clear with your facts firrst. Without effort, you're nothing, w/o training, you're shit!
@djdanny9 it's normal that a professional musical singer and actor who is 40 and with a lot of years of training beats a 18 year old boy who only trained for two months. i know he wasn't astonishing like micheal ball (no one is and wiil be like micheal) but for me he did a good job.
@khanhdan yea he's a singer but a pop singer. I had to re-learn how to sing for a musical. Like I said he isn't the best Marius but he did good. en plus i apreciated that Marius is played buy a person who can really look like a student. Naturally you can have a different opinion.
Incredibly impressive. Nick brought with him over five years of Broadway experiene. Kudos to Cameron for selecting him! Nick is 18 which is close to the age the role was intended for. I thought he did a great job in the 25th Anniversary Concert. He brought in a new audience and introduced a new generation to this gripping musical. Now, I can't get enough and I'll get the chance to see the touring production in 2011.
@jjjefam OMG are you joking? You and other Nick Jonas fans sadly don't know what real talent is! You see I and many others think and infact know that Nick did a terrible job with a voice that is just not mature and strong enough and that he has no talent or acting skills what so ever. Gareth Gates from the tour who was brilliant could of played the role at the concert, I don't know what Cameron Mackintosh was thinking about. He was very wrong indeed to cast Nick Jonas as Marius. VERY WRONG!!!:(
i personaly think its amazing how hes gone from pop group to west end. i love his voice and i love him as marius. i find it hard to believe hes only 18. he has so much talent.
Just so so awful. Ruins the whole concert. The 10th Anniversary is far better overall anyway especially with Phillip Quast as Javert.
