  • we lost him way too soon

  • well,I may be capable of a coherent response..when my tears of joy dry up!magic,in music,in magic

  • God bless Tim Buckley.

  • Just saw it. Unprecedented and amazing. Stay away from heroin.

  • Considering this inspiring man died of a heroin-overdose a few years later makes it even more tragic and beautiful.

  • What is it about this song?! I've been dousing myself in music for 40 odd years - heard everything!! So I thought! And then I stumble upon this and I am laid out - back at the valley farm, in hippie days, the tent the horses the sun the wine bottle the innocence of light touching my shoulder, I shudder. The past is richer than I thought.

  • so real and fool softly

  • Jesus, man. Goosebumps.

  • so beautiful

  • SHITTTT !!!! THIS IS F#&#*KING GOOD STUFFF !!!

  • My favorite Tim Buckley song. I was messing around with the chords, and then I checked out a version by Robert Plant on You-Tube where he was saying that he was a fan of Buckley back in the day, and I realized that Zep ripped the chord progression for 'Thank You' from Zep II. Geez

  • @Beetlehair You're totally right, bro. Great catch! I wouldn't have imagined that Led Zep was into Tim Buckley but you called it.

  • @Beetlehair Zep Ripping other artists of!!!!!??? Say it's not so!!!! lol

  • so amazin

  • Bravo. What a fabulous ending to what has been one of my favorite shows ever, I cry everytime see this! It's very beautiful. The Monkees has made a great impact on my life and musical carrer, and I think this song told a story of love and fight and compassion that I think at one time all of us(Including our Monkee men) have faced. <333 Thank you for posting.

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • great! **

  • I found this song creating a playlist for sailing. It is one of my favorites. Happy Birthday Day Tim.

  • Happy Birthday Tim

  • If there is a more beautiful song in the history of music, I have yet to hear it...

  • How did he happen to be on The Monkees show?

  • @Vazmusic I heard that Mickey really dug him and campaigned to have him on the show....

  • @Vazmusic Someone above said that Micky Dolenz wanter Tim Buckey on the show. Maybe it's a conincidence, but Frank Zappa was on the previous show speaking witn Mike Nesmith. Zappa damaged an old car with a sledgehammer with part of his song, "Mother People" played. Buckley is shown here performing in front of the same damaged old car. Zappa and Buckley were both managed at this time by Herb Cohen.

  • @sroche999 its a small musical world. Tim knew mike nesmith before he became a monkee, back when he used to write his own music, im pretty sure he was friendly with peter as well. they introduced him as their friend. and it was one of tim's very few mainstream t.v appearances and thanks to the monkees he got exposure he otherwise wouldnt have had - still to this day ! rip davey.

  • First heard this song in the movie Candy. The lyrics are so beautiful.

  • The lyric change to the line about the oyster is better than the studio version's line.

  • He was actually attempting the Bob Dylan circa 1966 hair style.

  • this song makes me feel so sappy, i love it <3

  • RIP Tim. I remember you well. "I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain" is a classic.

    and so is this.

  • There's so much emotion in just a man and his guitar. I love this song so much.

  • this song my dad shown me at the first conversation, this is his favourist song, I hope we will have good relationship with him longer and longer

  • Amazing sweetness!

  • wow!

  • Sideshow Bob

  • We would'nt have all the great covers of Song to the Siren without the great lyrics and music from Tim Buckley. Seems silly to fight about what version is best, they all touch us in different ways. I can only imagine that Mr. Buckley would be proud that his song would want to be covered by so many talented artist.

  • simple beauty.

  • It's pretty but the Starsailor version is absolutely amazing. So timeless, chilling, transcendant.

  • THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING, OF OF THE BEST EVER!!!1!ONEONE

  • Great song, best version... magique, incroyable..

  • He writes it, sings it and then Elizabeth Fraser perfects it.

  • @scrunts666 this is epic, a perfect match of melody and lyrics , feeling, voice etc. and i think the most beautifull song ever. this is perfect in so many ways, nobody can perfects it more then the great buckley himself so i would have to disagree on your opinion!!! by the way, larry becket wrote the song:-)

  • @thesource213 Punctuation, learn it. You just made my poor head hurt.

  • @scrunts666 His friend Larry Beckett wrote the lyrics.

  • World, thank you for giving us such good talents.

  • one of the best songs EVER

  • Gorgeous song. Makes me weep with its beauty. xxoo

  • Holy SHIT. What else can I say?

  • beatifull.... wow ... ... wow!

  • great song too bad his kid sucks so bad.

  • @JakobVirgil WHAT?! Jeff Buckley sucks?! What a fucking voice that he had mate! Jeff Buckley's one of the biggest lose of music world ever man ...

  • @Metruriel REALLY?! Jeff was a pretty big lose. A real wank of a singer. He never heard a musical line that he could not turn into a spasm of self-congratulation.

  • @JakobVirgil Really man? I just think that Jeff's a junky on his live concerts, but anyways, he had a fucking wonderful voice and he knows how to master a guitar tune :p

  • @Metruriel never heard him sing a line that did not make me cringe. But I come from that time period and I have seen him live.

  • @JakobVirgil

    you sound butthurt

  • @AidanMusik yes Jeff was a selfish lover.

  • love frusciante , but this version is way better than his

  • This is by far the BEST version of this very haunting ballad; but, to this day as a middle aged man that horrible wrecked car with the obvious impact spots on the windshield STILL gives me the creeps in the worst way.

  • Holy shit

  • i wonder where that guitar is today

  • What an artist just mesmerizing

    RIP Tim

  • oh my heart . . .

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I really wish Jeff Buckley had done a version of this as well. It would be great to see his interpretation of it.

  • The last scene in The Monkees TV series........ever!! Quite exquisite!!

  • @stewilflo Really? Wow, they really went out in style.

  • Jeff took after his dad so well, they are both mentally and physically beautiful men.

  • i just want to go back to the 60's and 70's and see how everything was. it would be awesome.

  • LOL Tim and Eric make the funniest vids!

  • WoW

  • this is my favorite version of the track it's near perfect, i just wish he sang "i'm as puzzled as a new born child". a better written song doesn't exist.

  • So beautiful. I'm crying here

  • WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS

  • Moby has clearly plagiarised the melody of this song, on the record "when its cold i'd like to die".

    Shameful.

  • Buckley's version is the best because no other artist enjoys singing it as much as he does. So sincere, so sensual, so passionate, so... from the heart! An euphoric mix of beauty, love, a bit of gentle sadness, hope, warmth, tenderness, and again love, love, love and endless beauty! I adore looking at Tim smiling all time while singing this :)

  • @TheVelvetBride true that! he is a poet! but i think is not smiling inside =) listen to the lyrics, it's also about pain and all.....

  • @dapard Yep, I have even covered this song myself, I know them by heart. Anyway, the story he tells is beautiful, even though sad. That's what makes him smile, I think, imagining all that sirens, the poor sailor in love, sea and all and correlating it to his personal feelings maybe idk... =))

  • @TheVelvetBride interesting! isent the lyrics are about himself? i meen an expierience that happend to him and he wrote about and all?...

  • @dapard Actually, lyrics to this song were mainly written by Larry Beckett, a musician who collaborated with Buckley a lot. I just meant that he just correlates them like each of us do while listening to different songs... :)

  • thanks john frusciante for bring me here

and i think he does a great job

    anyway enjoying this song

  • Fantastic song by a great talent who is sadly missed. Few of today's writers could match this.

  • @Lostchord1000

    Absolutely spot on

  • hes like a better looking bob dylan..this is the most impressive song writing I've ever heard

  • superb .

  • Like father like son.

  • What a voice!

  • Hi there Buckley fans out there; do you know a song by him where one sentence goes like this...: you are untouched and you will be touched...I heard this song all the way back in the 70-tis, and the song I am referring to was very beautiful, the style of the singing is that he start in a very low keys and brings it up to a very high falsetto......I really should like to hear it again, but I cannot find it by searching....thanks, ed

  • @onlinelondon Hey, this might be it. "strange street affair under blue" Im trying to listen to more folk myself. I listen to The Microphones/Mount Eerie, Jeff Buckley, Andy Mckee, and hopefully many more. =)

  • is he the father of Jeff buckley ?

  • @alihammadshah Yes he is

  • John Frusciante my ass! Just listen to Tim, for christ's sake...

  • love you, Tim.

  • damn. now thats a fro

  • funny pants

  • This version is definitely the best.. this song simply needs to be sung by a man... Sinead is pretty good as well, but a man's voice makes a terrific difference...

  • @vaczipeti and he wrote the song

  • so did the monkees tv show always have musicians like this on their show.

  • @mwells219 NO, near the end of the run Mike, Davy and, since his voice is in the introduction, Mickey had a single musical guest in a segment separate from the show. Mike had Frank Zappa, who pretended to be Mike Nesmith and Mike pretended to be Frank Zappa. They did a mock interview poking fun at the Monkees music being "banal and insipid" I don't remember Davy's guest's name, but they had a discussion of soul and percussion. That's probably more than you wanted to know.

  • I love this version the best. A 12 string and a key change to E. So very beautiful. thank you for posting. forever grateful. -much love and empathy, everyone.

  • john fruciante?james franco?we're listening to tim buckley here,my friends

  • @182bastard its frusciante..

  • @mastyer0fReality what do you mean?i love john frusciante.he's amazing.but song to the siren is written and sang here by tim buckley.and it's his credit.

  • @182bastard Ya i's be sarcastic. This guy's lucky frusciante covered this song, now we all know who Tim Buckley is!

  • @mastyer0fReality you keep your comments for you ,ok?i really can't believe what you said, but i won't argue with you.tim was a great musician and artist, and he deserves all credit for his work.not me,not obama, not jeff, not john frusciante

  • @182bastard Ya ill keep my comments for me. You go get yourself some english lessons alright? Thanks for the pep talk but seriously who's Tim Buckley I know a Jeff Buckley I know a John Frusciante but this Tim guy needs to keep practicing I think.

  • @mastyer0fReality - Idiot

  • @rankthis I would say "God sent me here" because this is heaven :)

  • I cannot thank you enough for posting this. When my mom was young, she loved Tim Buckley; when I was young, I adored his son, Jeff. Now I'm older, I've had time to discover both, I revere both. Tim was exquisitely sensitive. So sad to see his son die young. So beautiful to enjoy his music, which will stay with you whether you play it once or myriad times. Simply beautiful.

  • bless all of you.

  • THIS IS GONNA BE MY WEDDING'S MUSIC WHEN I GET MARRIED!

  • Tim Buckley is a so great singer. I'm happy John Frusciante's cover made me discover him. (Like a lot of other bands and singers)

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!!!

  • No other version puts me out to sea.

  • great song

  • the most perfect song ever performed

  • Wooow, Nice check out my covers as wel :)

  • John Frusciante

  • I saw this episode of the Monkees today (The Frodis Caper) and this part too.

  • formidabile Tim...<3

  • first of all i just said that an actor's job is to do what best for the film, to help the film reach it's full potential etc. Personally, i don't care about brilliant acting performances, i just want to see a good movie. And sometime those 2 arent the same thing. Doing what's best for the film doesn't necessarily mean doing what the director tells you to do.

  • What are you tossers on about? This is a classic song that goes from the creator on a shite TV programme in the 60's to being covered by a huge number of artists across the complete spectrum of music - George Michael, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, David Gray, Bryan Ferry - and my favourite a Trance Classic with Lost Witness.

Instead of wasting your lives on here - listen to some quality music, grab a good women and enjoy your lives - wankers

  • @1JosephStalin said the friendless virgin wasting his time on the internet telling people how to live their lives.

  • holy shit i didn't even see half of your comments. and btw trying to have this conversation in the comments section of a youtube video is very annoying.

  • Again, your "If you're talented" is pointless. Janis Joplin could never sing like Amy Winehouse, but it doesn't make her talentless. You don't need to be talented to sound like someone. You're trying to make a vague situation into a point according to your taste. Joaquin did a great job, ask other people about Bette in "The Rose" ask other people about Marion, and MANY will tell you they did great too. Your point is redundant. Listen, IDC stick to your opinion and I'll stick to mine. BYE : )

  • @studentfilmmaker305 then maybe janis joplin wouldn't be the best choice to play amy winehouse. Anyway, like i said, you're trying to make singing seem more complicated than it is. And yes being talented matters, you need a musical sense, not to sound like someone but to be able to not butcher their song. I only gave joaquin as an example to prove that with a bit of work and musical skill you can a good job and make the character fit seamlessly into the film.

  • @studentfilmmaker305 The fact that you're trying to deny that an actor doing their own singing helps the film is mind baffling.

  • He is a poet of the sort akin to Lord Byron before him. Beautiful. He always makes me thing of an earlier time. It could be because I am from Harrow on the hill (where byron went to school) and am an avid byronian but I really think his lyrics are more poetry.

  • He sounds so pretentious. Like John Denver without the nice melodies. I'm sorry, I've listened to him alot ever since I heard Steve Earl endorse him, but I just can't see what the fuss is about. He seems like a poser or a fraud! O.K. I said it, you can pile on now!

  • @terrybeaton Of all the crits someone might have of Tim Buckley, 'pretentious' is about the last I might have dreamed. Nice melodies? Try *ingenious* tunes and progressions. Maybe it's more accurate to say that you can't *hear* what the fuss is about. In addition, the call of a poseur or fraud is just simply beyond the pale. He's the real deal whom others imitate and derive from. I almost feel sorry for someone who doesn't love his music.

  • I love this guy

  • just a good song.. cocteau liiz frasar did a version .. thanks spaceo for this . much apriciation . ty

  • 2:05 hahahahahahahahahaha scheiß its the germany word for shit hahahahahahahahahahahaha i can believe it my mom wakes up at the moment right now like the police is called criminal polizei you know in germany

  • @daniiiiiii68 there is always some kind of scheiß from the sorrow, lol:)))

  • @daniiiiiii68 I heard "shy's from the sorrow", but scheiß, that's pretty funny.

  • This is such a treasured performance and happy it has been kept for all to enjoy.

His hair is my favorite physical trait :)

"here I am, waiting to hold you."

  • Perfection.

  • Talent cannot be bought. Tragic how we lose it so soon. His music still makes me feel fragile, but I'm glad for this.

  • @22Phantasm Do you think we experience deceased singers' work in a different, more powerful way? Like a 'it-hits-you-in-the-gut' kind? Somewhere I wrote a comment about him prodding my solar plexus.

I'm really just curious, because there is no other artist who invokes emotions in me like Tim Buckley does.

  • @NovaScotiaChick I think it's purely within the individual, NovaScotiaChick. I get goosebumps with all music I love, it evokes different emotions depending on how I feel at the time. If this hits you in your solar plexus, who am I to argue? I usually shed a tear if something special comes along. I have 4 of Tim's albums and I love them all, but for different reasons, as they are all different too. This is a particularly good vid as it displays Tim's timid side. What other music do you enjoy?

  • @NovaScotiaChick Try to find the amazing cover version of this song by This Mortal Coil... Sung by Liz Fraser formerly of Cocteau Twins. It's a superb version, original, sombre and just plain 'hits you in your solar plexus'. Hope to chat again soon. Take care.

  • John Fruscian'tes rendition is also awsome

  • how beautiful can be this song? speechless...

  • this is a classic no one else sings this song like this guy

  • A marvelous opus ! Un chef d'oeuvre de la pop !

  • beautiful, powerfull, true, amazing!

  • tim buckley è il più grande cantante di tutti i tempi

  • beautiful

  • Just beautiful

  • I wish James Franco was playing him in the movie adaption of his life. Would have seemed perfect casting to me.

  • @dirkbogarde44 Don't you think James look a bit more like Jeff, and his father? Maybe Heath Ledger would have been good........so sad to see him go too.

  • @dirkbogarde44 james franco cant sing

  • @olitraiga so he doesn't have to he only has to mime and it's perfect

  • @wipers86 pretty sure these days they prefer the actors do their own singing. look at joaquin phoenix when he played johnny cash. And there are many other examples.

  • @olitraiga well yeah but what I have heard james franco might be playing jeff buckley in the film that jeff's mum is involved in but that might just be a rumor I hope it's not , but yeah I know what you mean the runaways film was the same with kristen stewart doing an excellent job on the song I love playing with fire

  • @olitraiga Marion Cotillard didn't sing either but that didn't stop her from playing Edith Piaf in "La vie en Rose". That was perfect casting and was well rewarded. She received numerous prestigious awards including the Oscar for Best Actress. Acting is about embodying the character being portrayed into an actual person, not something minuscule as the actor not being able to sing.

  • @studentfilmmaker305 it's not miuscule at all. it's gives the film a certain sense of veridicity. And it's far better than the actor lip syncing. And well done on mentioning the oscar... as if that proves anything. Acting is about making the film the way the director wants it. Also it's far easier for the actor to embody the "character" of a singer if he/she can actually sing.

  • @olitraiga It's not even worth this discussion, 'cause I'm studying to become a filmmaker. For the actor being able to sing, is just a plus. In casting, the actor who is best suitable for the role, will take the role. You just sound like you're being pretentious. In a musical, when an audience member can notice lip syncing, that's because the actor didn't give enough credibility in his/her performance.

  • @olitraiga When you mention the actor should give the director what he/she wants. I think you're talking about "act sad" or "more angry" or my favorite "you're happy but you're also mad" type of directors. The relationship between an actor and a director is the probably the most important relationship in filmmaking. When a director "wants" something and gives direction on what he saw from his own imagination, that turns into result direction. Do you know what result direction is (w/o google)?

  • @olitraiga I mentioned Oscars because the Academy knows MUCH more than you do. Point is, you stepped on a territory you know nothing about, but btw you write, you think you know something, but knowledge isn't the situation. It's taste. You clearly don't know about film. If I want to see a film about someone singing, I see a documentary. If I want to see a film about someone's life, I watch a film. While you like films that have actors doing karaoke, I like films that have actors making ART. BYE.
