The first time I saw Bob Havens play on Lawrence Welk's show when I was a kid I was absolutely awestruck...he was and is the best jazz trombonist I've ever heard.
I just had to listen to this angain. It's the best arrangement I've ever heard of this great dixieland classic (& I've heard alot of them). THIS IS THE BEST). Does anyone know if and how this could be transferred to an I Tunes account in ones computer??
This is true Dixieland jazz. Great musicians and arrangement of a true dixieland classic. Great stuff -- just great. Thanks you for posting it. I'd love to have a copey of this. It's gold.
Kidding of course, but I heard an excellent jazz trombone player in the Preservation Hall Jazz band a couple years ago and can't remember his name...you should look into that
There are different genres of Dixieland. This type is a swing based Hollywood Dixieland. Much different than the Preservation Hall guys (which is great). Mahlon Clark (clarinet) was a brilliant studio musician. In fact all these guys were quite versatile and skilled. Bob Havens is a disciple of Jack Teagarden. He's tremendous player and musician.
I agree he is VERY good, but as stopandthink22 said, in this swing style. I think trad jazz owes its self to such trb players as Kid Ory, Jack teagarden, George Brunis, etc. as i relate trad to a more tailgate style.
O yes! where he sings with two hotties, the changes of range are amazing to me and he has so much ease. my trb teacher even said he had troubles with that piece.
I cant say i remember hearing any Frank Rosolino, just know him by talk.

Wow, even the dancers look like they are gliding on air. The musicians are surely out of the stratosphere. Terrific.

Love Bob Havens playing. There's no trombone player better at dixie.

Yes. There is a great version of Lover by Teagarden on YouTube. The changes are hard on that piece and he does it well.
My favorite of all time though is Frank Rosolino, but that's bebop not dixie.
