I Think native american leaders are failing their peoples. Communites on the navajo reservation in Arizona and New Mexico and Utah have few jobs, no effective police force, no mayors, no city councils, no economic development, no parks for children, no grocery store, some with no electricity, some with no running water.

I am 100% for helping modern native americans have a better life. And I'm all for helping them find work and get an education, and to especially help the elderly meet their needs. But it is very interesting that over a hundred years ago, their ancestors lived in temporary structures even more "primitive" (tipis, wikiups, etc.), and they were perfectly happy. One person's poverty is another person's simple way of life. Something to think about.

Am I mistaken or is language part of culture? Also, many of the native languages are dead. 4 generations is a long time and plenty of time to kill a language.

If I were to draw a line across you neck, then your arms, elbows, wrists, fingers, waist, legs, feet, etc., would you be able to say that your legs are no longer a part of you? Of course not, these lines are imaginary like the borders. Beyond those borders are Indigenous people in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Panama, Colombia, Canada etc., combine all these Indian people and we outnumber whites.
I thought I had it bad. Native Americans are damn there extinct. Alot of this is attributed to the handouts that they receive from the government. It deprves them of the self-sufficiency that they once boasted. It's nothing but welfare with a different name. What do you guys think?

If Christian teachers would accept the bibles fallibility they would discover a loving God of kindness. Incapable of hate, vengeance, anger. This would benefit mankind. But christians would rather serve a God of death, racism, nationalism, a god of banners who fights on their side in wars, the false Messiah.
Traditional christians have altered & created a false messiah, made him, powerful, vengeful, hateful, angry or even American. A messiah that no longer resembles the one depicted in the new testament. With the discovery of the dead sea scrolls. There is now much evidence that Christ was born into the Church. Meaning Christian values, baptism etc., were established before he was born. This doesnt mean he wasnt the messiah.
There is much contradiction in the new testament that is not studied by Christian teachers. The apostle Paul altered the teachings of Christ and the early church protested and urged Paul to repent but he wouldnt. This resulted in an angry vengeful god replacing the kind loving god taught by the disciples & Christ. Christian teachers who cant accept the bibles fallibility answer is that Gods word cant be fallible. (he can be a racist but still love you?)
Any person can learn an indigenous language from books or have it taught to them. But learning the language doesnt make you Indian. Speaking English doesnt make an Indian white. How do you know if you are talking to an Indian is that he does not love this country. Which is foreign to him. He has only feelings of disgust for that foreign flag of the u.s., that only represents evil, murder, foreign values. He has no faith in any white mans government. Democracy, Communism etc.,
Here in the Midwest a community has been flourishing for nearly 30 years. Children born with out ever watching t.v., or eating the garbage offered in restaurants, grocery stores, etc., never using white mans profanity or any profanity. The most wholesome children and adults that I have ever encountered. The american way of living is foreign to us. No one depends on the u.s. other than to be left alone. And more communities will be set up in the near future.
Law enforcement, military have no purpose or power here. There is no need for them. No one locks their doors. The only time you face prejudice or harassment is when you have to leave the community and travel to the nearby towns full of the Christians surrounding the community. Boy do they hate us. It doesnt matter what flag I see in your cities. There all foreign to me.
Here is something that most Indians wont tell you. Traditional Indians (those who dont adore that foreign American flag, who dont depend on money or the U.S. Government for anything) are persecuted by the Americanized Indians. I am hated by Americanized Indians because I live by upright traditional values. I do not follow the foreign Christian God of serial killers, dictators, homosexuals & child predators. And we don't believe in the U.S. constitution that allows these monsters to flourish.

I think you are comparing us with Indians who reside on reservations. If Americans were to intrude our small community (which is not on a reservation), they would establish poverty amongst our people. It is the Americanized Indians who live below the standards of America. So those statistics are accurate in that sense. An Indian cant be an Indian on a reservation without being harassed by the Americanized Indians.

There were of course wars and very warlike tribehowever nowhere near all. The 500 some tribes that exist in the us today are just a fraction of what they used to be. Everyone has the oppertunity to make money to take care of their families -this includes natives. I am 100% for helping modern native americans have a better life. And I'm all for helping them find work and get an education, and to especially help the elderly meet their needs. But it is very interesting that over a hundred years ago, their ancestors lived in temporary structures even more "primitive" (tipis, wikiups, etc.), and they were perfectly happy. One person's poverty is another person's simple way of life. Something to think about.

@akumie There still are a goodly amount that do but for the most part, an I've said it before, the white people have effictively removed culture and tradition from natives. Am I mistaken or is language part of culture? Also, many of the native languages are dead. 4 generations is a long time and plenty of time to kill a language.

You insult me, my people and my ancestors. My family did what most did, by joining the society. They worked hard and took nothing free. My grandfather from the reservation and father refused the free land, or casino money, or hand outs. They worked hard in construction to raise a family and have a nice four bedroom home like anyone else. Never foods stamps or welfare, NEVER. And paid my college tuition. What we have WE EARNED. We are proud and we are Cherokee Americans. Keep your charity.

National Relief Charities works on over 75 rural and remote reservations that struggle economically. We know Native Americans to be proud and industrious. Sadly, we also know what most of America does not -- that dire poverty still affects reservations, and that government, casinos, or jobs haven't resolved it. If we are asked, NRC assists these reservation programs and their volunteers with their self-determined goals. This is the NRC Way -- a hand up, not a hand out.

Yes, you can be adopted by the PEOPLE, but probably not by the Tribal Government which is of no importance to a militant traditionalist - I have a white friend of Scottish decent who was adopted by the Navajo and they call him a Navajo - he is very much beloved by the Indian people that he comes into contact with.

Your conclusion would be similar to me saying if Russia bombed the United States and all its white population annihilated. That the white race is now extinct this of course would not be true. Native Americans in Mexico outnumber the non-indigenous population by millions. If I were to draw a line across you neck, then your arms, elbows, wrists, fingers, waist, legs, feet, etc., would you be able to say that your legs are no longer a part of you? Of course not, these lines are imaginary like the borders. Beyond those borders are Indigenous people in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Panama, Colombia, Canada etc., combine all these Indian people and we outnumber whites.

There is much contradiction in the new testament that is not studied by Christian teachers. The apostle Paul altered the teachings of Christ and the early church protested and urged Paul to repent but he wouldnt. This resulted in an angry vengeful god replacing the kind loving god taught by the disciples & Christ. Any person can learn an indigenous language from books or have it taught to them. But learning the language doesnt make you Indian. Speaking English doesnt make an Indian white. Here in the Midwest a community has been flourishing for nearly 30 years. Children born with out ever watching t.v., or eating the garbage offered in restaurants, grocery stores, etc., never using white mans profanity or any profanity. Law enforcement, military have no purpose or power here. There is no need for them. No one locks their doors. Here is something that most Indians wont tell you. I think you are comparing us with Indians who reside on reservations. If Americans were to intrude our small community (which is not on a reservation), they would establish poverty amongst our people. It is the Americanized Indians who live below the standards of America. So those statistics are accurate in that sense. An Indian cant be an Indian on a reservation without being harassed by the Americanized Indians.

@Likathon thanks for sharing that. traditional cultures that have been oppressed with colonial genocide sometimes can become homophobic, like when the oppressed become oppressors. there are some native tribes pre-colonialism that were fine with homo/bi-sexuality. i have noticed that gays are persecuted in traditional cultures (and mainstream society),when really gays are suffering the same attack against nature/being themselves that natives/people of color are. we're all human beings.
