I'm a big TD and C64 music fan, and heard this before I ever got into Tangerine Dream, so was very surprised when I came across Alchemy, as I thought this track was a C64 original.
However, this is such a remix and goes off on its own path after a while and I love it, as I do all the Last Ninja 1 and 2 tracks...
The transition Matt Grey does in these songs are just pure genious. After 4 minutes here he goes quite differently while keeping the tune and just plays and plays with it.
My dream is for Trent Reznor to try and recreate these tunes in his way, think he is the only one who can try and grasp this type of music.
@Databamse Don't get me wrong, Matt Gray kills it, the entire soundtrack to Last Ninja 2 kills it... but the first half of this track is about 89% Tangerine Dream.
Why do these songs always get so kick ass near the end! I just keep skipping to the half way point and listening! Hehe, amazing songs for the system they were on.
Just goes to show the love they put into the game.
Remember this game from it stuffing up my DOS computer when I was a child - but never the less! This soundtrack was varied and used in the menu music for Nitemare 3D. Now to find the origin of all other Nitemare 3D music somehow...
Yes I totally agree with this particular track, one of the most epic tracks from the game. Words cannot describe how good the part from 3:35 is. So beautiful.
I personally liked the Palace the best from both of them. What was great about this theme was that it had shades in it from the Original Wastelands in the First Last Ninja starting at 4:10. I was so impressed with that.
Possibly THE best single music track ever made for the C64, with the Central Park theme one of the only serious contenders. This song never left my head over the past 20 years...
Oh wow, and even more compared to Alchemy of the Heart: watch?v=di0GU5R2dDU

I should come back to my plan building a temple for the C64, to remember all the good old times.

It is based on a song: Tangerine Dream - Alchemy of the Heart.

@markmarijnissen Only a very very very very very limited section of the tune is based on alchemy, the rest is done by matt.

I just loved the Last Ninja music on the c64. These little gems are timless piceses of great computer music history..
This tune, makes the hair on my arms stand right up :D, It's just beautiful..
I remember playing this back in 1988,
it's amazing what the "SID" chip could actually do:D
No wonder that ppl still makes synths with the SID chip included
The Last Ninja along with Katakis is my musical favs on the c64

Haha, I was just telling a buddy about Nitemare 3-D's "adaptation" of it before I noticed the comments here. It's just a cut-down version really.

That part starting at 4:05 gets my hair standing on end every time... incredible callback to LN1.

Wow, my bad. The track in Level 4 of "Episode 1" on Nitemare 3D is an adapted version of this. Not the menu music.

Best song in teh game... is he stealing from tangerine dream though!? I never knew until I came here and saw posts about it. That cheapens it a bit.

I always thought this was one of the best tracks from the game. It hasn't been remixed as often as many of the others though! =O

Yep. The part at 4.10 is my favorite moment of this superb tune.

The first melody is taken from Tangerine's track "Alchemy of the heart", which was released just a year before LN2.
