  • good stuff plus that robots got some funk on

  • also, being nitpicky here, but ur robot arms bend slightly where they are solid. the models is otherwise awesome :]

  • awesome work :] dont end on a playblast tho, put that somewhere in the middle and render it out if u can its gonna fit in better with the rest of ur reel :]

  • A good advice is probably to first search for jobs in your city and see what most companies ask for as a 3d artist and then start learning by the companies preferences, that way u will find a job easier when u will and keep at it regardless how long it will take before u get a job at a decent studio. Also search for tutorials on the internet and post youre work on forums, courses and schools help, but the best thing for me was to learn from tutorials and then practice on my own.

  • It's a good first reel but obviously u have alot to improve, i was a generalist for almost a year in production and well it's alot of hard work and it's probably better to get better at a certain part of the production pipeline for example, modeling, animation, texturing, rendering, fur, dinamics, compositing. Me personally after working in production i decided to switch to the gaming inductry and more specifically to asset creation and the rest i will be doing only on my projects.

  • This was a demonstration of an unsuccessful demo reel in my uni. The animation cant just be walk cycles, you're trying to show yourself off. Put characters in enviroments (they dont have to be textured) and make them interact with it in differnet ways. push yourself. The concept art for the robot doesnt match the walk cycle, the concept looks like he is strong and tough the walk cycle is "mr.wobbly". The models are good. But the whole thing needs re-thinking. Not my words btw

  • Why is it the video lagging? fuck my pc

  • wow! good work bro i think i have a miles to go before i reach ur level.

  • I really liked your cartoony style and you have great execution from concept to model, with clean topo. Have you published to CG Society or the like?

  • Some of the models are really interesting. I really like the robot and the car and I love your sketches.

  • good work and presented it very well

  • I watched the whole thing, easily... I liked it all.

  • Very nice, but characters at the start need better lighting to show off the models better. Other than that, nice concepts, great models and believable animation cycles. Thumbs up.

  • I saw a comment saying blender is easier than cinema4d....

Its the opposite! If you want easy modelling use cinema 4d!

  • beautiful! very beautiful! and i really like how you've shown the sketches with in the BG how did you do that?

  • wow.. all your concept art work looks amazing, and your 3D modelling aswell.... your extremely talented and there are definately lots of jobs out there for your particular role. Keep it up :)

  • The robot animation was really nice!

  • you are so talented...

  • Great motion. Well done. Check out my giant killer robot project

  • The skull car is when it gets good.

  • the music ads to the experience.

  • good work

  • Great work

  • I like your work actually, though I do agree with Logan in that you should specialize, I think you're quite talented in all areas that you're showcasing. I especially like your concept art though.

If you're ever looking for someone to collaborate with, send me message.

  • looks good~

  • @TheNickT3d

    Why was this flagged......

  • Nice scketches, i love the robot shading, and the car concept is great

  • love the robot. Laputa-esque!

    the music made me sad

    keep rocking

  • awesome :O (and gimme that car!!! :D )

  • Really nice

  • I like the overall style of the reel, especially the concept art in the background... But ur animation is not that good, and i didnt like the organic models.

  • in 2d it looks better...

  • Nicely put together, dude. Where did you study?

  • @Infinitehope6 ..... dude .... O_O

  • Cool chr i like your demo dude :)

  • it can be useful to be a generalist, but very difficult to find a job if that's what you are applying as.

most companies will stop watching a demo reel after 30-90 seconds. this being said, being a generalist really doesn't work out very well for anyone applying in the 3D design field unless you are a master of everything.

Some of these models are good, while the animation/textures are lacking, and visa versa. If I were you I would pick one field to specialize in. Unless you already have a job

  • @LoganSchubert, I respect the constructive criticism, and I am currently working at narrowing my work down to a specific area. This demo reel was a product of a two year course in The Centre for Arts and Technology to help get an idea of the basics on overall (Hence '3D Generalists')

Currently I'm working a temporary internship, and after that, I've considered another course to advance. Thank you for your comment, it's greatly appreciated!

  • @LoganSchubert I've actually noticed Generalists positions on the rise as of late, due to downsizing of companies amongst other factors. Bigger companies will still want specialists, but many small studios and game studios like DoubleFine are still seeking mostly Generalists. I work in games/vfx for 10 years, btw and also teach at Ex'pression College for Digital Arts. I usually tell my students to get good at 2 skills at least. Like, 2 that go well together(texture/modeling) (rigging/anim.)

  • @LoganSchubert I agree and disagree. If you are a 3D generalist you should make a movie, whether it be short, or full length feature. Thats why companies wont hire you if your a 3D generalist with a demo reel. My point is this, I see a lot of great work out there with no real direction. This shows that you know how to use the program. You need to show that you are creative and can take an idea from START TO FINISH. Bottom line anyone will hire a film festival winner. Originality is always key

  • @LoganSchubert I'd totally disagree here and it would be interesting to know how you're doing a year since. Being a generalist is what people want these days, especially if you can do concept design (art) to the finished textured model (3D modeling).

If you're not somewhat a jack of all trades, then you will only be useful for a specific task and won't be onboard a project for the entire duration in many cases. It's either joining a team as all-rounder or work freelance as specialized artist.

  • #LOL

I live in Oromocto, New Brunswick and I'm trying to decide what school to go to. NBCC, Holland College (PEI), or Center for Arts and Technology.

Could you tell me why I should pick this school?

  • @BillionaireBillard, pardon my slow response; Centre for Arts and Technology has, as of recently since the past two years, been making big changes to its courses. The staff are incredibly helpful; and I mean not just 'answer you questions and be done with it' helpful, they will give you attention to your projects and offer more help than expected. The classrooms are small, so it's easier to get help from teachers.

The only con I can say about Centre for Arts and Technology is that you should-

  • -- should always back up your files, as the computers there tend to be fickle with what gets saved and what doesn't. Though, that'll be the first thing told at the college. Despite that, it's overall amazing!

  • @BillionaireBillard Go to The gaming and animation institute of fredericton. I am going there now and you get to meet actual industry professionals.

  • @TheNickT3d Is that the new one that opened this year?

  • @TheNickT3d You get to meet industry professionals at the Center For Arts and Technology also... At the one here in Kelowna, we have a classic/2d animation teacher named Norm Roen, look him up on Google. And we got taught by 2 different guys through the video conferencing room who work at EA. And another one of our teachers who deals with industry stuff, animation, demo reels, life drawing and character design has worked for Disney and EA for a few decades.

  • @KakkoiiBaka I went to the one in Fredericton for a year. and was lied to like crazy. They manipulate people who dont know much. I was told we had our own motion capture studio. Which was just and empty room :/ I was also told by the head of Kelowna that i didnt know anything a year into the program. so what does that tell you about how the school is run.

  • @TheNickT3d Well then I guess it's perhaps different in Fredericton, since it would be different teachers and administration. And that's what a motion capture studio is supposed to be dude. It's an empty room that you set up a sphere/ring of cameras in to track points on an actor and match them to an animation rig.

And what do you mean you were told you didn't know anything by the head of the one in Kelowna, what was the context in which this was said?

  • @KakkoiiBaka It was in the context that my opinion didn't matter, Have you noticed that last year nothing on the website for center for arts and technology is of Fredericton based students. Its because literally all the ones good enough to do anything dropped out for other schools. And I mean cmon. 40,000 dollars for a 2 years 3d program that doesnt even teach 3d until half way through year 1, and with classes like business tech. And a mocap studio is more than an empty room. FYI

  • @TheNickT3d Your opinion on what? You have no experience in the industry and had only been really learning fundamentals for the first year, so I can't imagine your opinion would matter much, although you haven't said what was being discussed, that's why I asked abut the context.

It's 40k for the Fredericton one? It's 36k for the Kelowna one. And over course it's not going to teach 3D from the start, the majority of the students need to be taught the fundamentals of art in general first.

  • @TheNickT3d Most kids joining up are going to be gamers who think it would be cool to work in the industry, not having any real good artwork experience. You'll get the rare few who join that are already amazing artists.

And try looking up videos of game studios motion capture rooms here on Youtube. Do you not know how motion capture even works? They just showed you the room where they do motion capture. You can set up the cameras when you need to use the room for that.

  • @KakkoiiBaka it wasnt even the mocap room. it was literally an empty room lol. and i do know how it works. it costs tons and tons of money to have a proper mocap studio. and i do agree with the art fundementals. however i do not agree with computer tech basics like microsoft word. - WTF microsoft word really. As for context. i asked what the point of business tech and certain other specs as to why our curriculum layout was so random. we did like a week of modeling then animation, then rigging...

  • @TheNickT3d And this was Francisco you were talking to? Because he's the head of the Kelowna one. And here they tell us all the time to not try to be generalists but to choose an area you like the most and focus on it, make it the focus of our demo reels and what we are applying to a job for. And in the second year the animators and the modelers actually get different assignments/requirements.

  • @KakkoiiBaka Wow that school is apparently much much better than the Fredericton CAT - i learned more in two weeks at my new school than and entire year at the Centre - and we didnt get the BT100 exemption option either. - Do you have a blog so i can follow you - I am interested in seeing some of your work - and maybe collaborate sometime.

  • @TheNickT3d Nah, I haven't gotten around to setting up a blog yet. I have a deviant-art I sometime add stuff too. kakkoii-baka.deviantart. com

    Do you have a blog?

  • @TheNickT3d As for BT100, yeah they let anyone who passed the first test not have to take the course, and we got the money back for that course to use on any course of our choosing. It is a pretty silly course I agree, we would learn all the stuff that class teaches over the course of our time spent in other classes.

And he is half right, you're someone with no industry experience, where as he and the other teachers have lots and know the best way to get hired. At least the ones here in Kelowna

  • @KakkoiiBaka And then he tryed to justify it by saying we want to teach you to be generalists. my response was along the lines of - Well shouldn't our courses be more structured - he basically said. no your a student you dont know what you are talking about. I hope that a year in i know what im talking about because if not i think it is time to give up.

  • @TheNickT3d I'm guessing it's probably harder for Fredericton to get good experienced teachers also. Due to it being so far away from the major cities that have game and animation studios. I would imagine not many people in the industry would want to move out there to teach. Here in Kelowna we are right near Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, so it's a very attractive location. We had John Delaney for character design and life drawing, it was pretty awesome to have such a famous teacher.

  • @KakkoiiBaka We have Carl Callewaert and Fredericton only had a 50$ budget to bring in industry people - Carl is incredible though He knows a ton about the industry. Also at my new school we have had Lance Lefort come and talk to us about his recruitment job at Starz animation in Toronto - We have had Brad Waddingham from Ubisoft Montreal Teach us about Face modeling - Alex Hicks (graduated from Centre last year) come in and talk to us about his job at Bight Games and in two weeks Gavin Goulden

  • Top stuff mate!

    Keep it up!

  • This is awesome Twin! I didn't know you did this kind of thing :'D

  • Nice reel!

  • DANG ur gunna be one hell of a game maker i liked the car and the robot =D

  • Fantastic work, I love how you brought an element of humor to the work. Great stuff.

  • Awesomeness! I showed my friends and posted it on facebook ;). You're so talented!! Keep up the good work! I want to see mooooooooooooore!

  • I like the overall flow of your characters. They have the natural limpness of organics, unlike some other 3D works with stiff movements which killed the models no matter how good the graphics. The Robot was personally my favorite. You managed to capture its movement very well, especially with the upper arms as it had many bending zones. Although there was still was some stiff movement in the jumping movements this was overall a very great piece!

By the way this is Tim MacDonald. ^_^'

  • The illusive TIM!

Yes, the jump-in/out animations didn't quite match up entirely, I'm impressed you caught on to them!

  • This is just amazing, very good work :D

  • Much appreciated for the kind words, mate!

  • I sent this out on twitter

  • Thank you! I don't use twitter all that often, so that helps a lot!

  • Great demo reel. Good luck.
