Ok ... I've always heard (and believe) that this was based on Patti ... but I've never understood the booze/coke thing. Patti was never that heavy into the stuff.
Gilda was great, of course, and I always liked this. However: (1) Patti Smith was never known to be a great abuser of substances, (2) Patti was much more into
Keith than Mick, (3) Mick DID play an instrument (harp, rhythm guitar.)
@finylvinyl66 yeah according to Keef, hes a pretty solid harmonica player when it comes to the blues, like Charlie Musselwhite! Also Micks guitar playing is pretty good too. "the boys finally got it!" he quotes
Amy Winehouse? She's the last person that should be associated with this video. She's not punk or rock. It's more an homage to Patti Smith than anyone else.
None of the female comics on SNL could touch Gilda talents...some have some close, but none have touched Gilda's star. R.I.P. She surely was one of a kind.
Pakistan: Christian woman sentenced to death for "blasphemy"
Apparently all she did was confess the Christian faith. Islamic Tolerance Alert: "Punjab: Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy," from Asia News, November 9 (thanks to C. Cantoni):
Islamabad (AsiaNews/Agencies) - Pakistan has "crossed a line" in sentencing a Christian woman to death for blasphemy. Asia Bibi, a 37-year-old farm worker mother of two, was convicted of committing blasphemy before her fellow workers
Candy Slice -- one of Gilda's many great characters. I wish there had more sketches with Candy Slice. The music is actually pretty good. RIP Gilda. We miss ya...
I have literally been looking for this for YEARS!!! I LUVED me some GILDA. Gone much, much too soon. I actually had a Cooley High, In America, Beaches moment where I cried inside my head while looking at this clip.
Candy was always so hysterical! What made it so funny was that it was'nt too far from what the punk scene was like at that time. It is hard to laugh when the band was so great, and you could really see Gilda fronting a rock band for real.
Oh lawd, this was a great goof on Patti Smith, who was just coming into her own then.I had just bought Horses and Easter as a kid,Radner had my in hysterics.
I LOVE this character, too bad you cant post the SNL episodes, where she goes to a party and Garrett Morriss is Bob Marley Jane Curtin is Dolly Parton and Laraine Newman is Olivia Newton John , COMEDY GOLD , RIP GIlda I love you !
@starqz "amy winehouse" has nothing to do with this! this is the third comment ive seen where she is mentioned. this is truly pathetic, im 15 years old and even i know this is a parody of punk rock singers in the 70's more specifically punk legend, Patti Smith. people are ignorant...
@whatsername1234 Then you should know what I said was an ironic comparison to how similar Amy Winehouse is to Candy Slice, and how Patti Smith obviously inspired the character of Candy Slice, in looks certainly if not behavior. Amy Winehouse IS the Candy Slice of the 2000's..I don't think you're too ignorant to see the obvious similarites to the two of them.
@starqz again it was a parody of PUNK ROCK singers and musicians. and Amy Whinehouse shouldnt even be brought up cause she isnt a big icon of punk or even rock and roll in general. shes just a tweaker. and also it pre-dates her.
@starqz and the only obvious similarity is drugs. performance wise and how shes dressed is totally different. at least in my eyes since i have an interest in punk rock in the 70s
@whatsername1234 You can split hairs on it all you want but in terms of dysfunctional BEHAVIOR Amy Winehouse IS very similar to the Candy Slice character. No one else but you is even disputing that obvious similarity.
Wow this was a forgotten character. Looking for this for a hot minute! I remember the SNL version was better. It is a trip seeing Paul on the drums. Also seeing GE with short hair.
Oh hell yeah!!! I remember it! "If ya look close, you can see my tits...cause I want ya to but don't want you to KNOW THAT I DOOOOO!!" Omg, that was so funny!!
this was both awesome and hilarious at the same time! GE Smith is smokin here on guitar... very Rick Neilsen vibe here! pretty cute when Gilda jumped in him at the end of the song! also this is pre-spinal tap and has that vibe too!
I am not sure how anyone could take Patti Smith seriously after Gilda parodied her. Actually, I'm not sure why anyone took Smith seriously before either.
The tone GE Smith has at the intro of this tune is killer.

Yeah, I kept thinking Patti Smith. Joan Jett didn't hit big until like 1981 or 1982 with I Love Rock N Roll. But she looks a bit more like Joan lol.
Jethrofinger 10 months ago
@SavannahNight Candy was clearly based on Patti Smith. Although it was a
memorable performance, it wasn't that good a satire on Smith, who wasn't
the substance abuser pictured here. More a takeoff on the punk thing happening
at the time.
finylvinyl66 10 months ago 4
@finylvinyl66 Agree! It's more like Lou Reed
