  • The tone GE Smith has at the intro of this tune is killer.

  • Joan Jett was also very poular in The Runaways which was in the mid to late 70's

  • ge smith rules

  • I remember this skit....awesome. She died well before her time, RIP

  • So awesome. Here's a "comedy" musical performance that's pretty much better than anything being produced today.

  • this was during the time period when Wild Turkey was carbonated apparently.

  • Where's our star performer? Oh, there she is. And then she rolls onto stage. This reminds me of The Rose.

  • great video and soo funny .i have the cd and vinyl soundtrack to this movie.. is it on DVD??? must get it.

  • That's Paul Schaffer on the Drums! Holly Cow, that man did have hair!

  • Ok ... I've always heard (and believe) that this was based on Patti ... but I've never understood the booze/coke thing. Patti was never that heavy into the stuff.

  • @SavannahNight

Yeah, I kept thinking Patti Smith. Joan Jett didn't hit big until like 1981 or 1982 with I Love Rock N Roll. But she looks a bit more like Joan lol.

  • @SavannahNight Candy was clearly based on Patti Smith. Although it was a

memorable performance, it wasn't that good a satire on Smith, who wasn't

the substance abuser pictured here. More a takeoff on the punk thing happening

    at the time.

  • @finylvinyl66 Agree! It's more like Lou Reed

  • @SavannahNight a lot of times when a character is created, be it SNL, second city or the muppets, it's a composite of different people

  • gosh i wish i could have met her. its way too sad that she died before i could do so. =(

  • Gilda Radner was the Boy Howdy Girl on Creme Magazine 1971-1975 also

    the National Lampoon Magazine parodys..

Keep Em Laughing in the Universe

    Gilda

  • GILDA & DON KIRSHNER RIP!

  • Looks like Candy stole some of her moves from...Steve Martin

  • you've GOT to be kidding!

  • @MrClarkryan Actually I see a lot of Steve Martin in that performance.

  • looks like candy stole some of her moves from....steve martin

  • Gilda was great, of course, and I always liked this. However: (1) Patti Smith was never known to be a great abuser of substances, (2) Patti was much more into

Keith than Mick, (3) Mick DID play an instrument (harp, rhythm guitar.)

  • @finylvinyl66 yeah according to Keef, hes a pretty solid harmonica player when it comes to the blues, like Charlie Musselwhite! Also Micks guitar playing is pretty good too. "the boys finally got it!" he quotes

  • patti smith loved gilda radners character. why is amy winehouse coming up.

she's no patti smith! i doubt she'll have a 40 year long carreer like patti smith. she inspired punk rock. amy winehouse is a trainwreck.

  • ah! gilda's dead people

  • absoluteley everyone knows thats who she's playing, patti smith, amy winehouse couldn't lick patti's boots.

  • GE Smith ws also Gilda's husband for a couple of years.

  • Amy Winehouse? She's the last person that should be associated with this video. She's not punk or rock. It's more an homage to Patti Smith than anyone else.

  • @tommansd i see what you are saying, but starqz meant like all the drugs and booze and stuff amy winehouse does is related to candy.

  • She's doing Courtney Love before Courtney. Check-out G.E. Smith on guitar. He became leader of the SNL house band in the mid to late 80's.

  • None of the female comics on SNL could touch Gilda talents...some have some close, but none have touched Gilda's star. R.I.P. She surely was one of a kind.

  • Pakistan: Christian woman sentenced to death for "blasphemy"

Apparently all she did was confess the Christian faith. Islamic Tolerance Alert: "Punjab: Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy," from Asia News, November 9 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

Islamabad (AsiaNews/Agencies) - Pakistan has "crossed a line" in sentencing a Christian woman to death for blasphemy. Asia Bibi, a 37-year-old farm worker mother of two, was convicted of committing blasphemy before her fellow workers

  • there's her ex GE Smith!

  • @artrue13 That is indeed GE Smith, but this was before they were married.

  • And there's her ex husband GE Smith!

  • man, Kristen Stewart really let herself go...

  • This video inspired me so much that I just went out and bought Exile on Main Street and a Half Gallon of Old Crow.

  • Best Patti Smith parody ever

  • i finaly found it tg, she was one of the greats, check out the rest of her life on youtube and books and videos, she is missed,

  • Candy Slice -- one of Gilda's many great characters. I wish there had more sketches with Candy Slice. The music is actually pretty good. RIP Gilda. We miss ya...

  • That hottie on the guitar, I think that was Gilda's 1st husband.

  • Love this!

  • God bless you, Gilda Radner. . .

    . . .I still love and miss you much. . .

  • Oh Gilda, the world needs you now more than ever!

  • "ROCK me

    ROOOOOLLLLLL me

    'til i'm SICK !"

    Gilda forEVER X0 X0

  • "You, Mick Jagger, don't keep regular hours" - LMAO!

  • This is a treasure!

  • Take that, Taylor Swift!

  • I have literally been looking for this for YEARS!!! I LUVED me some GILDA. Gone much, much too soon. I actually had a Cooley High, In America, Beaches moment where I cried inside my head while looking at this clip.

  • THANK YOU for posting, made my whole day!!! I want more Gilda!!!

  • OMG!! Paul Schaeffer. I forgot he was a part of this.

  • @msbitchypants: And playing drums--no less.

  • This performance seems a little bit more serious than the SNL one. I like it! The music is actually good!

  • Gilda was married to G.E. Smith when this was on Broadway.

  • Yep and he also joined the Hall & Oates band that year as well!

  • Candy was always so hysterical! What made it so funny was that it was'nt too far from what the punk scene was like at that time. It is hard to laugh when the band was so great, and you could really see Gilda fronting a rock band for real.

  • The Great Gilda.....with G.E. Smith on guitar!

  • Makes me wonder if Johnny Thunders wasn't an inspiration for this carachter as well as Patti Smith.

  • @snare222 ahh i've never thought of that!

  • Oh lawd, this was a great goof on Patti Smith, who was just coming into her own then.I had just bought Horses and Easter as a kid,Radner had my in hysterics.

  • Gilda's right up there with Lucy and Carol, as one of the funniest women in television history. I wouldn't want to rank them.

  • i dont remember the words except for "i sing loud"

  • I love the one when shes in the studio and they play this cool punky song i never liked this one as much but its still cool

  • Is the other song "If you look close"?

"If you look close, you can see my tits, cause I want you too but don't want you to know that I do!"

  • I LOVE this character, too bad you cant post the SNL episodes, where she goes to a party and Garrett Morriss is Bob Marley Jane Curtin is Dolly Parton and Laraine Newman is Olivia Newton John , COMEDY GOLD , RIP GIlda I love you !

  • It's on the SNL Season Four DVD. Episode hosted by Ricky Nelson.

  • Geez. Its pre-Amy Winehouse :/

  • @starqz "amy winehouse" has nothing to do with this! this is the third comment ive seen where she is mentioned. this is truly pathetic, im 15 years old and even i know this is a parody of punk rock singers in the 70's more specifically punk legend, Patti Smith. people are ignorant...

  • @whatsername1234 Then you should know what I said was an ironic comparison to how similar Amy Winehouse is to Candy Slice, and how Patti Smith obviously inspired the character of Candy Slice, in looks certainly if not behavior. Amy Winehouse IS the Candy Slice of the 2000's..I don't think you're too ignorant to see the obvious similarites to the two of them.

  • @starqz again it was a parody of PUNK ROCK singers and musicians. and Amy Whinehouse shouldnt even be brought up cause she isnt a big icon of punk or even rock and roll in general. shes just a tweaker. and also it pre-dates her.

  • @whatsername1234 see you get it. she's goofing on patti smith, who was a friend of gilda's

  • @starqz and the only obvious similarity is drugs. performance wise and how shes dressed is totally different. at least in my eyes since i have an interest in punk rock in the 70s

  • @whatsername1234 You can split hairs on it all you want but in terms of dysfunctional BEHAVIOR Amy Winehouse IS very similar to the Candy Slice character. No one else but you is even disputing that obvious similarity.

  • Gilda was unbelievably funny and talented.

    She is sorely missed.:(

  • I sing that song all the time. GENIUS!

  • I think I love G.E. Smith now.

  • Wow this was a forgotten character. Looking for this for a hot minute! I remember the SNL version was better. It is a trip seeing Paul on the drums. Also seeing GE with short hair.

  • Does anyone have any video of Gilda as Lisa Lupner, The Nerd? Please post it!!!!

  • can comedy central please show this again im dying here!!!!!!!!!i love gilda lol

  • Please please please somebody post "If You Look Close"--that was classic!

  • Well, we can see where Amy Winehouse got her inspiration from! LOL

  • So romantic!

  • I love this and i love Gilda. I wonder if anyone remembers the song she did called "If you look close". We loved that one and i would love to see it.

  • Oh hell yeah!!! I remember it! "If ya look close, you can see my tits...cause I want ya to but don't want you to KNOW THAT I DOOOOO!!" Omg, that was so funny!!

  • this was both awesome and hilarious at the same time! GE Smith is smokin here on guitar... very Rick Neilsen vibe here! pretty cute when Gilda jumped in him at the end of the song! also this is pre-spinal tap and has that vibe too!

  • Watch the guitarist with the Gibson when Gilda takes the second hit---now that's acting!!!

  • yeah that's GE smith, man! also around the time he started playing in the hall & Oates band!

  • .okay... i saw that, lol. it was the times back then that's all i'll say....

  • GIMME MICK! :-)

  • I am not sure how anyone could take Patti Smith seriously after Gilda parodied her. Actually, I'm not sure why anyone took Smith seriously before either.

  • i didn't get her either then and i still don't

  • Patti Smith

  • Luv the fake underarm fur. Gilda is sorely missed RIP

  • rawr!

  • i think paula cole took her hairy armpit cue from candy

  • Give me Mick... Rock me and roll me... Till I'm sick!!!! I love it! She does a great Patti Smith. Thank you so much for posting.

  • omfg, big rofl @ mr Paul Shaffer!

this clip better end up on Letterman so theres finally something to laugh at during it.

  • I think this was where Amy Winehouse gets her schtick.

  • gilda's "candy slice" character was based on punk icon patti smith...

  • Candy Slice- the Amy Winehouse of the 70's

  • @starqz Maybe Candy was an inspiration for Amy

  • @starqz You had it SO right.

  • @starqz Amy Winehouse's last "concert" in Belgrade 2011 reminded me of this.

  • OMFG!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for uploading this! 2 hours ago I went searching for this clip and I couldn't find it and now here it is! Thanks a lot :)
