Gorgeous control. I first heard Al Jolson and didn't get it at all. In the meantime I have realised that his voice have a unique rough beauty that is simply magnificent.
I think I can beat that. My mother took me to see "The Jolson Story" in Sacramento, California when it opened at the Tower Theater in , I think, 1946. I would have been 12 years old. Tower Records (the origibnal) was next door and I made her buy me a 78rpm single of "April Showers.'
so jolson could not get away with that voice (bad) these days ? what do you mean these days and who do you refer to ?genius is genius his was a once in a lifetime voice in any era ?
He looked far too old for Jolson Sings Againy. Sad, but true. And I really think Larry Parks brought an easy charm that Jolson never had. And not to be picky, but he the Bby Face audition clip was for Joslon Sings Again which was released in 1949 when he was 63.
In less than a year from the time of this video, Jolie would be dead. He was absolutely the greatest entertainer. i wish I had been able to see him live....."You ain't seen nothin' yet" was his tag line. He was right.
watch the clip of babyface and his lower half and remember he is 56 years old at the time
so give the man his due he was the king of the world for twenty years and a hit again in the 40s long live all of em jolson sinatra elvis jackson whitney aretha christina and eveyone else who have conquered the world
if you truly have watched this genius you would know that had he had the worldwide exposure they get today back then he would be kown as the first to start he was the inovater the first showman the first to move the first to sell a song not just by singing it all to follow elvis, jackson and all the rest have only followed in the mans footstepshe was the first to shake and grind he moved like elvis 30 years before elvis was born and could sell a song better than anyone living today
I sing this in April when I walk my dog in the rain! What wonderful upbeat songs he sang. California Here I Come, Nothing Could Be Finer than to be in Carolina in the Morning, Swanee...thanks for sharing this rare footage!!! And thanks, Al for making us laugh and smile.
Always brings a smile to my face when I see and hear this maestro. Nice to see one of his last. Like many of the greats, taken too soon perhaps, well I guess all was achieved and more at 64. Hope to croon with you later Asa!
He might have been tired. He'd been touring all week and doing several shows a day. More likely, he was just relaxed. Remember, he did both the Barry Gray show and the stev Allen show late at night and sitting at a table.
@ellington56 i am a 70 year old englishman just seen this - i recall george allen saying no one could command the stage as jolson did and his voice matured into this wonderfull musical voice we hear on this live recording ?

Jolson's worst day is better then any other entertainer's best day. He was in a class by himself. He died the next year.Sad

He could have well been tired here but considering what he did would have taxed a man half his age; phenomenal and thanks for posting

@diarci - thanks for this all i can say is how remarkable the voice became and how the whole person that was jolson is unlikely to be repeated ?

Very enjoyable-----unlike Jolson to sing with his hands in his pockets----I wonder if he was weakening.
