  • There are two possibilities: the first is that in this video you play a very popular tune; the second is that the two or three people's song where I've listened pieces of these melodies, sampled from your video... In all the cases, this video is a very nice and enjoyable video

  • this sounds fantastic!

  • it´s a marvelous sound!

  • BTW, I have a H&K Blues Master I'm not using anymore, if anyone's interested - ping me..

  • what a nice instrument, space echo <3

  • which "mark" is this Rhodes?

  • @marcusunlimited It's a Mark I Stage, and an earlier one at that. Probably '71, '72-ish.

And man, I wish my Rhodes would sound that good. I still have a ways to go on the action and tone though. And I got sidetracked by a Piano Bass I bought.

  • @AFiestOfFriends 1971

  • this is esy to masturbate to

  • THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE- MOST of the change in tone is not coming from amplification here. The Crunch Master (and blues master) is actually a very similar sounding preamp to the twin reverb...VERY similar when using a clean sound on the crunch master into a clean power amp. the MAIN DIFFERENCE is coming from the roland's full range speaker cabinet versus the TWIN's guitar speakers! BAM! Great sounds on all three recordings nontheless!! just thought id educate yall!

  • The Voodoo Jets (on YouTube) use a Fender Rhodes (Roland sample) using two Fender Blues Jr.'s and a single Marshall from the late 1980's.

  • What Rhodes is this?

  • Only 307105 views ?? I should have already watched it 300000 times only by myself..

  • ;D

  • I love this; I love the kit that you play; I love the sound, and you play that like a pro.

I don't care about the watch.

  • Nice sound, but what kind of watch is that you're wearing? I kinda dig it.

  • @lcvd1 Haha, dunno, some cheap-shit-retro-style watch... but i like it too :-)

  • @kaufmann6988 whats that space echo thing?

  • Wow, this was a very instructive, informative, and entertaining video! I actually wanted to know if it was safe to play a Fender Rhodes through an electric guitar amp, and since you played it through a Fender Twin, I think that answers my question! I might be getting a good deal on one, and I like a crunchier, gainier electric piano sound, and think it'll sound great through my Orange Tiny Terror. Loved the way it sounded through that Twin, by the way. :D Great video.

  • this sounds awesome dude.

  • Dear God, beautiful :')

  • Es el sonido autentico ...

  • it sounds so brilliant I had to sample it.. hope you don't mind, I can send you the link on PM..

  • What scale do you used there? Thanks

  • Can anyone give me band/artist names that sound similar to this? It just sounds sooooooo good

  • @backtofitzgerald00 I know at least a couple of the pieces on Bitches Brew (Miles Davis's 1970 double album of course) feature a significant electric piano part...not totally sure if it's a Rhodes but this sounds remarkably similar so I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

  • @GoonSquad500 thanks a lot for the anwser ;) have a nice day!!

  • That was an interesting demonstration ... and it reinforced my belief that I want that kind of tube amp Rhodes sound.

Here's a question: Does it make sense to keep my 180W Behringer keyboard amp and buy a tube pre-amp (like a Seymour Duncan) to use with it, or should I just get a small tube combo amp?

The Fender Twin is way out of my price range.

  • @Superphilipp. I like my combination of Roland keyboard amp and the H&K Crunch master. There is one on the german ebay right now. Very good for Rhodes !

If you want the Fender tube sound youshould go for the Hot Rod Deluxe or the bigger Hot Rod DeVille (two 12" speakers). They sound much better than the Twins. Especially the new models (serie III) are excellent for Rhodes.

    Good luck !

  • @kaufmann6988 Danke :-)

I'll bid on the Crunch Master. Provided I won't get it (I'm still a bit apprehensive about this whole thing), which modern pre-amp will give me similar results? Or should I just get a Tubescreamer or something like that?

  • @Superphilipp No, you cannot use guitar overdrive/distortion pedals for that. The Rhodes has too much output and they do not simulate a guitar amp sound. Alternatively you can use the TRamp unit which is based on the Crunch Master, but optimezed for Rhodes (Taste und Technik in Germany)... but he will not be building more units in 2011 because of the huge popularity.

  • @kaufmann6988 Argh, both of the aforementioned preamps are near impossible to find! Any other suggestions for a good sounding tube pre that won't break the budget? Beautiful playing by the way...

  • @kaufmann6988 i just researched this TRamp unit. Can't find an english page about it. You know of one? It looks like it is a preamp based on the fender twin preamp or similar blackface circuit... i know the crunch master has a similar tone stack to a blackface. I'm actually into this stuff due to Jerry Garcia's use of a twin preamp into a SS mcintosh power amp. super clean and fat! You might wanna check out Sarno Music Solutions if youre interested in upping the ante- SMS classic and SGBB

  • @goldenmonkeycolor As a matter of fact, the TRamp is based on the Crunch Master. The prototype of the TRamp was a modified Crunch Master. I can strongly recommend both ! :-)

  • @kaufmann6988 so in effect the TRamp is based off the twin reverb... so the important question is where can I get the TRamp?!?!? and how much do they cost? I missed the end of an auction of the last blues master on ebay :(. I really love these things. I would love the SMS classic but its too much. these twin preamps work well with so many instruments I cant believe there arent more stand alone units like these 3 out there

  • Respond to this video... I guess the ideal setup for a rhodes player is a blackface style tube preamp with a full range power amp (maybe a tube power amp) into a full range speaker cabinet or a rhodes and some others? You're tone with the roland and the rhodes is really something. i'd bet (if you dont use the eq on the roland or use it as a power amp only) you could get a lot more volume a lot cheaper like this- HK>SS power amp>PA cabinet- and you could customize your speakers

  • i have always wondered what they would sound like going in to a fender vibratone aka Leslie16 ...AWESOME i bet

  • The rohdes is the Sexiest piano of all time

  • is a rhodes essentially just an electric piano? yknow like one of them which never goes out of tune because it's purely electrical?

  • @tombokickass nah, these definitely can go out of tune.

  • @lifesglorydead do they often?

  • that bark in the low end is so tight...

  • My GOD! I want your hands!

  • Hot damn, that is a rig if I've ever seen one.

  • Gorgeous.

  • Beauty .... Flows like a river ........

  • If you had to define what style of music was played on this vid how would you call it ?

    Cause I loved !!!

  • @jroberto1994 Its Jazz my friend :)

  • The Whitest Boy alive uses this quite often. didnt know what it was until now. sounds simply amazing and kudos to the great playing :)

  • lush!

  • what an amazing sounding instrument. Great playing too!

  • 14 people don't feel the groove.

  • Comment removed

  • rhodes is sex

  • Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes!!!!!!!!!!

  • I want to use my Mark I to record. What would you recommend as a good, but also not too pricey, preamp for this?

  • Man that's some great playing. All amps and direct sound great just in different ways. I'm thinking of getting a rhodes. I love the sound. Thanks for the demo.

  • Minimoog <3

  • beautiful

  • that twin reverb is beautiful

  • sorry that was 'GGFHZ'.

  • this is one of my favourite youtube videos Mr Kaufmann

Have you seen any videos by 'gghfz'? It's Toby Smith (ex Jamiroquais personal music space). I think he'd like your work.

  • @joshjbracey Thank you for your comment. I like the GGFHZ stuff. My line of work ;-)

  • cool if I sample this for a hiphop beat?

  • OMg I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE I WANT IT TOOOOOOO !!!!!! I love playing piano: but a rhodes it's the best !

  • @mamatrotro I'm cool with that. Just credit me wherever you can ;-)

  • All three sound are very much usable. They don't have the same character, though, they tell a different story.

  • The soothing sound of the Fender rhodes gets me every time. You have a sweet setup there man that a boy the age or 17 could only ever hope for.

  • Can you do a cover of Riders on the Storm?

  • don't you just love the crunchy warm sound the rhodes has to offer? i do :)

  • @KeithMMeldrum Crunchy-warmth brother.

  • This vid + rainymood . com = Happy happy times. Trust me.

    ...

Yes, I am aware that this looks like spam. (sigh)

  • if i had that rhodes and moog I'd totally bust out with some Whitest Boy Alive jams

  • i have a roland rd 700 sx. do you suggest me to hit the kc 350?! i want it for home use but i want to get the most out of my piano!!! or would u say kc 550 for best?

  • @eimaisklhros For home use, the KC350 would be more than enough. But for you to get the most out of your piano, you should have a stereo setup. I would go for two KC-60 or two KC-150 instead. Place one on each side of you as you play ! :-)

  • @kaufmann6988 i searced throughout the internet and i think that i should hit the KC 350 and connect it - as you very well said- with another amp, just to get the important stereo sound..now i will check the possibility of two KC-60 or two KC-150 , thanks a lot friend. :)

  • beutfitul

  • TWIN REVERB. Twin fucking Reverb on a Rhodes. By the way, I have that sucky MKI Suitcase you mention. It's true, there are some crappy Rhodes pianos that by any logic should be phenomenal, and some that are just inexplicably magical, every note.

    This is a great vid.

  • That break you did at 1:50 is the sweetest thing ever. So awesome.

  • Rhodes and Wurlies forever

  • Hey, we should trade keyboards. Mine's just a crappy casio, but the keys light up when you play them... Think about it.

  • sounding killer, dude!

  • My dad used to go in to a rackmount 15-band eq then stereo analog chorus, then to a pair of old Realistic (as in Radio Shack) 35 watt solid state P.A. amps with a 1x15 with a tweeter on each side of the stage (PV cabs with black widows I think) and it sounded better to my ears than his recording setup, which was an all-tube hammond tone cabinet, modified to accept 1/4", xlr, RCA, or two-terminal inputs. The eq helped a lot with the PA amps, but it was still a great sound from a solid state rig.

  • fuck yeah, i have a question is jazz music ?

  • @kerman77

    ""is jazz music?""

No, it's just metal played softly.

  • it's so amazing

  • Rhodes - Wurlitzer - Hammond B3 - Hohner Clavinet

    What else ?

  • @MProject4 Minimoog ;-)

  • @MProject4 Maybe a mellotron.

  • Incredible. What key is this being played in?

  • @JoshuaCuthbert C minor

  • HOLLLLLLLLYY SHIIIIITTTT,,

I envy this set up so much!! the Space Echo is definately a cherry on top!

  • I like Both. But i would use the roland for west coast music and the fender for Motown

  • I like Both. But i would use the roland for more west coast music and the fender for Motown

  • The Fender Rhodes is truly one of the finest instruments ever developed.

  • Lovely playing! It really has that characteristic rhodes sound through the twin, but it sounds nice and crisp through the roland.

  • Wow, put that in your pipe and smoke it - seriously mellow and groovin' my man.

  • i love the roland tone. great sound :)

  • sounds awesome

  • what little keyboard is that on top?

  • i can't believe i finally found out what that tone is called. its like for years you know that keyboard sound but you don't know what its called and your trying to get your keyboard player to do it but ya can't remember a song with it in there! nearly drove me nuts. many thanks kaufmann6988!

  • yeah, great.

  • It's nice to see that this rhodes is in the safe hands of an EXPERT!

  • nice vibe & skills bruv

  • I jizz my pants everytime I hear this. What chords are you playing by the way?

  • Wheres the repeat button!?

  • woow u play awsome!

  • o.O what a good sound and a nice playing,thank you!

  • Great sound and playing...what I did on my 1972 Mark 1 was take the tone pot out of the preamp circuit...it was muddy and boring now sounds like off the harp with volume pot...! I had good luck with BBE stomp pedal, but a stronger eq helps me live

  • sounds great i love that analog tone and nice space echo is that the actual tape analog echo system?! SWEET!

  • this and a moog on top!? why do you get to be so cool!? :)

  • Such fantastic playing. I play guitar and these riffs are so influencial. thank you for posting this its just great.

  • MAN... that sounds so friggin awesome!! i have GOT to get me one!!

  • Sound from heaven....

  • Where could you get a Fender Rhodes at? I want the kind your playing here..

  • you play so Goooooood!

  • I know this isn't the purpose of this video.. but loved the the harmonies.. is that a song? or are you improvising? If you are.. In what scale?

  • Are you using the speakers that came with the Twin?

  • @mralanb Yes. It is a RI 65 model.

  • Comment removed

  • Sounds great! And I agree with you. There are a lot a variations in sound between the different models. I have the exact same model as yours, and to my ears it is the best sounding model. My is from 1974. What year is yours? Check out my videos. I have some with the rhodes. Just be aware that I'm a guitar player... No piano chops :(

p.s. What's the synth? mini old school?

    Thanks for posting!

  • @angelometz I don't have this Rhodes anymore, but it was from 1972. The Rhodes that I have now is a 1971 Suitcase an a 1977 Stage. I like your videos very much ! Hope to be able to post some more vids soon.

  • cool video. do you mind if I ask what the 4-digit code is for your rhodes (with the week and year)?

  • @mralanb I don't have this Rhodes anymore, but it was from 1972. The Rhodes that I have now is a 1971 Suitcase an a 1977 Stage.

  • @kaufmann6988: I love the tone of this one. Nice and warm with a good barking sound. Why did you get rid of it?

  • You say it's just an amp test, i think it's the best Fender Rhodes video on youtube. It's just the way it sould be played.

  • @antilope83 Thank you very much ! Hope to finde time for some more Rhodes and other keyboard videos.

  • chords please

  • Love this man!

  • Fender is the best most definitely!!! There's just something about it that makes the sound so much more emotional and beautiful.

  • @LeeFlowers92 Thank you for your reply. Funny how taste can be so different :-) I should make a new comparison soon... with a different setup.

  • @kaufmann6988 yes please!! lol

  • @LeeFlowers92

I completely agree. The Fender blows the Roland away. By itself it's probably simply a matter of what kind of sound you like best (personally, I found myself starting to move my head involuntarily by the Fender sample, groovy as hell); but in a mix, the Fender surely must sit better?

  • this tone is tits in my mouth... :O

  • You's the man

  • smooth with the crunch where it counts

  • that's just beautiful

  • pure cream

  • Were can i get one and how much?

  • HOLY SHIT THATS DOPE

  • I think that Fender gives a "moody" sound. Roland gives more emphasis to the highs' ( a more cheesy sound I would say ), but Fender has a characteristic mid sound, a little "blur" that it's my personal best!

  • I'd go with the Roland. But your Rhodes is set up beautifully and played extremely well

  • One of my fav instruments still! I like both amps you use. The Roland is maybe a bit bassier? And that must be a mini moog on top of the Rhodes eh?

  • I get goosebumps everytime I hear rhodes sound... It takes jazz on a completely different level

  • you have some really nice chords man

  • ZABIJÁCKEJ FENDER

  • Daamn so great playing! How much you paid for that rhodes? Have you learnt to play by yourself?

  • humi am really bored anyone wanna play and have fun

  • Love the slightly grittier sound from the Fender twin reverb. Nice video, real nice playing.

  • great playing!

  • Im probably gunna get the Roland kc 350. Is it lightweight and portable?

  • i thought the rhodes was an acoustic instrument?

  • That's a killer rig man! Wonderful and dreamy sound

  • my rhodes sounds nothing like this :(

  • @mostlyharmless11 Don't worry. Most Rhodes pianos can be adjusted to sound just like you like it. But because of the uniqueness of the instrument, every piano has it's own personality. Make a video of your piano and show us what it can do ;-)

  • Oh man.. great tone, great playing...

I'd love to have the Roland Space Echo for my guitar rig.

  • With the minimoog on top, pfff seriously, that is some nice gear you got there! Can I ask you what you paid for the Rhodes / Where did you get it? I am looking to buy one too. Thanks!

  • what scale/harmony might this be?

  • you have an awesome looking setup, and also play beautifilly

  • Here's something you guys might enjoy. Have rainymood. com (remember to remove the space) open at the same time as this vid. Simply magical.

  • The Twin sounds the best to me. It is a little warmer and smoother

  • Drop back to 1976

  • where can I find more music in this style?

  • To my ears the fender twin sounds worlds better. Has that dirty, coloured 70's rhodes sound. Beautiful!!!

  • I just bought one of these for 400$ was i ripped off?

  • definitely not if it works!!!

  • not at all these go for thousands

  • Damn. That is some damn sound playing there, sir.

  • the Roland is much better than the Twin Reverb , u should try the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus on this keyboard

  • MK1?

  • bastard you have a rhoads and re space echo

    sigh!!!!!!

  • Direct to mixer!! would be my choice anyway.

  • damn you make me wanna sample this lol

  • I would so jam with you man.

    inspiring.

  • Great playing

  • Man, the best sounding instrument on earth, just beautiful. OK, perhaps the second best - I'm a guitar player, I have to say that, you know... ;-)

  • Twin. All the way down.

  • I'd prefer the Twin Rev. Most soul and body. The KC is to thin, I think..... Helpfull vid. five star. Amazing differences

  • Lovely :)

  • and you expect us to chose among those ? they differ a bit yeah but they are both heavens

  • Moog, Space echo, and rhodes. i would kill for any of those. i actually have the AB-2 line selector, and no offense, but i was horrified by mine. it wasnt true bypass, the LEDs barely lit up, the footswitch is poorly built, and whilst i was comparing to distortion pedals using it, i came to realise that it is horrible! E.G i have the pedal set to go out of output A, but if i listened to output B, i could still hear sound bypassed to output B!!!!!!!!!!
