There are two possibilities: the first is that in this video you play a very popular tune; the second is that the two or three people's song where I've listened pieces of these melodies, sampled from your video... In all the cases, this video is a very nice and enjoyable video
@marcusunlimited It's a Mark I Stage, and an earlier one at that. Probably '71, '72-ish.
And man, I wish my Rhodes would sound that good. I still have a ways to go on the action and tone though. And I got sidetracked by a Piano Bass I bought.
THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE- MOST of the change in tone is not coming from amplification here. The Crunch Master (and blues master) is actually a very similar sounding preamp to the twin reverb...VERY similar when using a clean sound on the crunch master into a clean power amp. the MAIN DIFFERENCE is coming from the roland's full range speaker cabinet versus the TWIN's guitar speakers! BAM! Great sounds on all three recordings nontheless!! just thought id educate yall!
Wow, this was a very instructive, informative, and entertaining video! I actually wanted to know if it was safe to play a Fender Rhodes through an electric guitar amp, and since you played it through a Fender Twin, I think that answers my question! I might be getting a good deal on one, and I like a crunchier, gainier electric piano sound, and think it'll sound great through my Orange Tiny Terror. Loved the way it sounded through that Twin, by the way. :D Great video.
@backtofitzgerald00 I know at least a couple of the pieces on Bitches Brew (Miles Davis's 1970 double album of course) feature a significant electric piano part...not totally sure if it's a Rhodes but this sounds remarkably similar so I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
That was an interesting demonstration ... and it reinforced my belief that I want that kind of tube amp Rhodes sound.
Here's a question: Does it make sense to keep my 180W Behringer keyboard amp and buy a tube pre-amp (like a Seymour Duncan) to use with it, or should I just get a small tube combo amp?
@Superphilipp. I like my combination of Roland keyboard amp and the H&K Crunch master. There is one on the german ebay right now. Very good for Rhodes !
If you want the Fender tube sound youshould go for the Hot Rod Deluxe or the bigger Hot Rod DeVille (two 12" speakers). They sound much better than the Twins. Especially the new models (serie III) are excellent for Rhodes.
I'll bid on the Crunch Master. Provided I won't get it (I'm still a bit apprehensive about this whole thing), which modern pre-amp will give me similar results? Or should I just get a Tubescreamer or something like that?
@Superphilipp No, you cannot use guitar overdrive/distortion pedals for that. The Rhodes has too much output and they do not simulate a guitar amp sound. Alternatively you can use the TRamp unit which is based on the Crunch Master, but optimezed for Rhodes (Taste und Technik in Germany)... but he will not be building more units in 2011 because of the huge popularity.
@kaufmann6988 Argh, both of the aforementioned preamps are near impossible to find! Any other suggestions for a good sounding tube pre that won't break the budget? Beautiful playing by the way...
@kaufmann6988 i just researched this TRamp unit. Can't find an english page about it. You know of one? It looks like it is a preamp based on the fender twin preamp or similar blackface circuit... i know the crunch master has a similar tone stack to a blackface. I'm actually into this stuff due to Jerry Garcia's use of a twin preamp into a SS mcintosh power amp. super clean and fat! You might wanna check out Sarno Music Solutions if youre interested in upping the ante- SMS classic and SGBB
@goldenmonkeycolor As a matter of fact, the TRamp is based on the Crunch Master. The prototype of the TRamp was a modified Crunch Master. I can strongly recommend both ! :-)
@kaufmann6988 so in effect the TRamp is based off the twin reverb... so the important question is where can I get the TRamp?!?!? and how much do they cost? I missed the end of an auction of the last blues master on ebay :(. I really love these things. I would love the SMS classic but its too much. these twin preamps work well with so many instruments I cant believe there arent more stand alone units like these 3 out there
Respond to this video... I guess the ideal setup for a rhodes player is a blackface style tube preamp with a full range power amp (maybe a tube power amp) into a full range speaker cabinet or a rhodes and some others? You're tone with the roland and the rhodes is really something. i'd bet (if you dont use the eq on the roland or use it as a power amp only) you could get a lot more volume a lot cheaper like this- HK>SS power amp>PA cabinet- and you could customize your speakers
Man that's some great playing. All amps and direct sound great just in different ways. I'm thinking of getting a rhodes. I love the sound. Thanks for the demo.
i have a roland rd 700 sx. do you suggest me to hit the kc 350?! i want it for home use but i want to get the most out of my piano!!! or would u say kc 550 for best?
@eimaisklhros For home use, the KC350 would be more than enough. But for you to get the most out of your piano, you should have a stereo setup. I would go for two KC-60 or two KC-150 instead. Place one on each side of you as you play ! :-)
@kaufmann6988 i searced throughout the internet and i think that i should hit the KC 350 and connect it - as you very well said- with another amp, just to get the important stereo sound..now i will check the possibility of two KC-60 or two KC-150 , thanks a lot friend. :)
TWIN REVERB. Twin fucking Reverb on a Rhodes. By the way, I have that sucky MKI Suitcase you mention. It's true, there are some crappy Rhodes pianos that by any logic should be phenomenal, and some that are just inexplicably magical, every note.
My dad used to go in to a rackmount 15-band eq then stereo analog chorus, then to a pair of old Realistic (as in Radio Shack) 35 watt solid state P.A. amps with a 1x15 with a tweeter on each side of the stage (PV cabs with black widows I think) and it sounded better to my ears than his recording setup, which was an all-tube hammond tone cabinet, modified to accept 1/4", xlr, RCA, or two-terminal inputs. The eq helped a lot with the PA amps, but it was still a great sound from a solid state rig.
i can't believe i finally found out what that tone is called. its like for years you know that keyboard sound but you don't know what its called and your trying to get your keyboard player to do it but ya can't remember a song with it in there! nearly drove me nuts. many thanks kaufmann6988!
Great sound and playing...what I did on my 1972 Mark 1 was take the tone pot out of the preamp circuit...it was muddy and boring now sounds like off the harp with volume pot...! I had good luck with BBE stomp pedal, but a stronger eq helps me live
Sounds great! And I agree with you. There are a lot a variations in sound between the different models. I have the exact same model as yours, and to my ears it is the best sounding model. I completely agree. The Fender blows the Roland away. By itself it's probably simply a matter of what kind of sound you like best (personally, I found myself starting to move my head involuntarily by the Fender sample, groovy as hell); but in a mix, the Fender surely must sit better?
I think that Fender gives a "moody" sound. Roland gives more emphasis to the highs' ( a more cheesy sound I would say ), but Fender has a characteristic mid sound, a little "blur" that it's my personal best!
@mostlyharmless11 Don't worry. Most Rhodes pianos can be adjusted to sound just like you like it. But because of the uniqueness of the instrument, every piano has it's own personality. Make a video of your piano and show us what it can do ;-)
With the minimoog on top, pfff seriously, that is some nice gear you got there! Can I ask you what you paid for the Rhodes / Where did you get it? I am looking to buy one too. Thanks!
Moog, Space echo, and rhodes. i would kill for any of those. i actually have the AB-2 line selector, and no offense, but i was horrified by mine. it wasnt true bypass, the LEDs barely lit up, the footswitch is poorly built, and whilst i was comparing to distortion pedals using it, i came to realise that it is horrible! E.G i have the pedal set to go out of output A, but if i listened to output B, i could still hear sound bypassed to output B!!!!!!!!!!
There are two possibilities: the first is that in this video you play a very popular tune; the second is that the two or three people's song where I've listened pieces of these melodies, sampled from your video... In all the cases, this video is a very nice and enjoyable video

@mostlyharmless11 Don't worry. Most Rhodes pianos can be adjusted to sound just like you like it. But because of the uniqueness of the instrument, every piano has it's own personality. Make a video of your piano and show us what it can do ;-)

Oh man.. great tone, great playing...
I'd love to have the Roland Space Echo for my guitar rig.

With the minimoog on top, pfff seriously, that is some nice gear you got there! Can I ask you what you paid for the Rhodes / Where did you get it? I am looking to buy one too. Thanks!

The Twin sounds the best to me. It is a little warmer and smoother

To my ears the fender twin sounds worlds better. Has that dirty, coloured 70's rhodes sound. Beautiful!!!

Man, the best sounding instrument on earth, just beautiful. OK, perhaps the second best - I'm a guitar player, I have to say that, you know... ;-)

I'd prefer the Twin Rev. Most soul and body. The KC is to thin, I think..... Helpfull vid. five star. Amazing differences
