Incidentally, isn't it pronounced 'Coff-lans'? It might be just me, but the spelling would indicate that, although everyone else seems to pronounce it 'Cog-lans' as you did.
I realize it's a subjective thing, but I'd prefer fewer items of better quality than a can full of cheap gear. The three most important considerations for short term survival are fire, water and shelter. It's not that things like candy, bullion, tea are not useful. But for myself, I'd rather do without them, and have higher quality items to insure the first three are secured, and go from there.
Not a bad little kit. I bought a few for the cars. You're not going to survive the Apocalypse with this thing, but if you get stuck outside somewhere overnight then I can see this being really handy. They definitely fit a lot of useful items into the can plus the can itself can be useful.
Great vid man! I don't meen to be cockey here, but that kit needs to have some puri tabs and sault in. It's obvious what the purifacation tabs are for, but if you add some sault into some water, it will hidrate you more. Also, you could maybe get some patassium permanganate. That has many diffrent uses. Anyway, EPIC channel mate!
Survivor Man used this exact same kit in the Papua New Guinea, episode and it work out great for him i'm gonna get a few of these small kits for vehicles and travel.
They could have made that so much more useful! like how bout embedding the razor blade in the plastic pencil handle so its easier to use like a knife? and add the compass too , so you don't loose it ! Way too many small loose items. and i have never seen the survival instruction be water proof. wax coating the "note paper" would make it like cotton ball w/ Vaseline fire starter. They could make it so much better with the same ingredients used differently.
Absolutely useless kit. I wouldnt try to survive in my living room with this kit. If I got causgt out inthe wild and had to rely on this kit the first thing i would do would be to throw it away to save on the weight.
That's an awesome little kit and you did a great job showing it! I think I will get one just because it's so handy and compact. Everyone likes to have the fishing gear but I really can't think of needing it in most survival situations. It would be nice if they could fit a survival blanket in that thing. Good job and thanks for sharing!
Good think they gave you nails... 2 should keep the lid on your coffin because you will be dead if you depend on this kit. Watch my videos on the 5 C's of survival. And see what you really need in a kit.
those nails look like 8d nails, and as for the rest of the kit....thats quite substantial for a little kit in a can. I'd probably keep more than one of those in the car or something.
I have to say, that looks like crap. Most of that is a bunch of stuff you can buy from walmart and home depot. I've made an altoids kit based on the Fieldandstream(dot)com version though mine is modified to include a few things that don't fit inside. The entire thing cost me about 100 bucks to put together (including extra stuff that can be used to make more of the same kits) but it's much more robust and contains high quality items.
@DeimosSaturn Building your own kit is probably the best idea. For the cost though, these kits aren't horrible. This might even be a good kit to have on hand while someone is building their own from scratch.
@mikejpetrucci If you build your own kits, you usually are buying several of things you only need 1 or 2 of in your kit. Therefore, if you only want 1 kit, this may be cost effective, but if you want several (EDC/car/BOB/camping gear), then the costs are much more even.
Substitute Fox 40 for whistle. Substitute kevlar thread for string. Substitute Wet Tinder for cube. Add magic birthday candle (relights in rain). Hair bands. Peanut lighter. Add countycomm style razor blade & serrated edge. Antibiotic ointment. Mini prybar. Mini pliers/multitool. Pill container. These kits are better than nothing, but they aren't that great. Better to build your own in a better box than waste money here. Just MHO.
@mrmonkeyman50 You listed some great ideas! Looks like you already know exactly how to run a kit like this. Building your own is probably one of the better ideas but giving these as little stocking stuffers or throwing one in your pack while camping can't be a bad idea either. Thanks for the input!
I hate these things - they are a joke. For a penny more, you could have at least a plastic cover to reseal it. Best thing is to get an Otterbox and stuff it yourself! Costs more but I'd rather bet my survival on it!!!! :O) Thanks for the review.
@dogpunch223 This kit and the last one reviewed both lack on the water purification front. I mean, you can boil water but to boil enough to sustain yourself will take forever! Good call on the tablets.
Very nice reveiw i have just been looking at these for myself and my daughter, hiking season just start here in Aussie land. You have helped me chose this kit, so thanks. btw you should be able to find a plastic lid to fit the tin, a strip of tape will help seal the tin up. again great reveiw and take care.
those look like common 8d nails to me but i dont have a nail collection or anything. ha. this kit looks way better then the whistle creek one. might have to put this in my pack.
