Linux is not a OS on it's own. It is only the kernel. The shell of the "linux os" is distributions like Ubuntu, Mint or OpenSUSE.

The linux kernel is smaller, and it's faster.

You can choose to make it dualboot, if you want to keep Mac or Windows

@hazzaisthebomb Guy, you're really silly. This is just one distro of GNU/Linux. There are many Linux distributions, some more effects than others. Watch videos of Ubuntu, for example. Linpus Linux has that appearance because it is designed to function optimally in netbooks.

@hazzaisthebomb First of all it's laggy because it's being run in a virtual machine. Also, this is only one of the many Linux distributions out there. Go look at video's of Ubuntu. Or perhaps youtube compiz fusion if you want to talk interface and eye candy. Nothing is made for it? You go ahead and buy/crack photoshop to have it installed during 10 minutes with a wizard, clicking next 20 times. I'll just go to my software manager, click install GIMP and watch my screen for 20 seconds. Problem?

Not used a touch screen I'm afraid, there is probably a car distro though somewhere.

Very true, totally agree, I have an old laptop, so that's why it works for me, It was a pain in the ass to Install it on my computer and configure it the way I wanted, but I wanted speed, and let me tell you, Puppy flyes!!! It boots in less than 30 seconds and it never freezes, and it's the most stable os I've ever had.

Do you know what version of Linux it is running?

XFCE isn't too bad, its just another window manager. Its lightweight which is probably why its installed. It could be worth trying to find a copy of Linpus Linux and reinstalling it with this. I've just reinstalled my EeePC 701 with Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. Its quite nice. Maybe try that?

Do a google search for install linpus lite on acer aspire one or do a youtube search for Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 to see if you like that instead.

You might not get Linpus Linux on your netbook, it really depends on which you get. It would be worth looking it up first.

With regards to Linux in general, yes there is a flashplayer and there are several programs that provide msn messenger functionality.

Three of these are pidgin, amsn and empathy.

Google for each of these to see which you prefer. They are all free.

Usually recovery involves using a USB stick. For example my EeePC came with a CD and an image on it that you run from a Windows PC with a USB stick and it will write the reinstall image to that. It also came with a recovery partition but I don't expect any others to have this.

Having had a netbook which came with Linpus installed as the default OS. I have to say that Linpus is certainly the ugly duckling of Linux distros. Not only was it quite buggy, a lot of it was just simply broken.

It lasted about a week on the machine before been killed out of frustration, and replaced with Ubuntu Remix. Which I've found works perfectly on the same netbook, and gives no problems at all.

Even the name Linpus is horrible, sounds like a skin disease.
