My iPod worked great, until Apple updated iTunes software to accomodate the iPhone. I have tried everything to get it to work. I have done the 5 r's. I have checked the cable. I have (stupidly) paid for a new hard drive. I have restored my computer to its original condition. I have had the iPod reset at the Apple store to Apple operating system, then came home and plugged into my PC to give a brand new PC compatible operating system. I paid for Apple support by phone. It still does not work.
you do know there is steps you must take when you hook and disconnect it from your computer if not done right it will cause the ipod to have a hard crash witch makes it freeze every time you use it ALOT of people do this and yes there is nothing wrong with the ipod...

read ur manual? has happened to me there is a reset button, also maybe you need new updates for your itunes, its happened to me freezing before. it was like a week after i got it after christmas. took me a week to find out about reset button had lost my manual lol

Same thing happened to my iPod Photo. Resetting it didn't work either, but I was able to get it into safe mode and reformat the hard drive, now it works just fine. Manufacturers build electronics with shoddy materials and engineering to purposely break, otherwise, how would they make money if their products lasted forever?

I think I considered that. But overall that wasn't the point. For example, if I'm driving on a long trip or I'm on a plane, plugging it into an outlet or a PC is not a viable solution.

Trying ANYTHING new is at least an effort to get away from Apple so, I'm with you. But for now I'm stuck with 10,000 songs in Apple's format. There's no way I'm taking the time to convert them all to something else.
