My recommendation is to pick 1 to 2 'registered' charitable organizations, with a well documented history. If a supposed charity is not registered, you're taking a large risk. Do your homework.

I don't give to random strangers at my door, claiming they are from 'Sports for Teens' etc etc. They may be telling the truth, or just pulling the wool over your eyes and appealing to your generous nature. Just say no thanks and good luck.
