One of my favorite songs of all time. I rewatched the movie recently and I was so disappointed as I slowly remembered that Fred fell for the doctor. </3
@JoelandtheBots Yeah. Dr. Dolittle liked her by the end but he knew he couldn't cope with a relationship. But they were going to be in that snail for about two weeks in the end, so they might have got together then.
@ARP7777777 I never mentioned Dr. Dolittle's sister. But a relationship would never have worked. But he does fall in love with her in the stage play- the last scene is their wedding. I think this was a mistake-
the whole point of the story was that Dr. Dolittle couldn't get on with people.
@verkaforever Not really. What about Matthew Mugg, his wife, and Tommy Stubbins? He liked animals better than people because animals were consistent and he still treated people who treated HIM with respect and DID NOT LAUGH at his ability to speak the forgotten language. It says in the BIBLE that animals talked, or that they COULD talk, under the right circumstances, so I do not see what your problem is. Sorry, I have a chip on my shoulder about sensitive people being attacked by fools. . .
Anthony Newley had the most remarkable phrasing of any singer I've ever heard. This is a difficult song to sing and he makes it sound so natural and conversational and meaningful. The touching acting on top of it is just a bonus.
@Montork People remember it. It was on TV over Christmas. It just isn't as well known as other musicals. I have to be honest, I could never have sat through it, but there are some true classic moments. I like the message of this song. The world is full of beautiful things- a shame they get eclipsed by the ugly things.
There was a while in my life where I could see this clip perfectly in my head but didn't know where it came from. Later we found the video and it was fuzzy and distorted on this part because of how many times I would rewind and play it again and again. Thank you for posting this! This is my favorite ever!
This song is sublimely beautiful & enchanting, with words that bear weight even today. Not many songs are spun in that kind of timeless sense, but this one proves without a doubt that we can choose to see life's beauty :o)
I love this song, it's entrancing. and everything she wears is fabulous, especially that one outfit with the huuuuge hat

There are more verses to this song that were cut from the film:
"THe world is dipped in delicate dreams,
sparkling streams,
Lullaby themes"
and
"You wonder why the nightingale sings
Lovers have wings people wear rings
The world is full of beautiful things"

Music is terrific, but it was Tony Newley that brought the lyrics to life. He was truly beautiful in every way.!

@JoelandtheBots He did not know what to say to her, in the way she would accept his love.

People just don't write melody like this anymore. It's sad. Thank you Mr. Bricusse.
