I played in a band named Beau Nash in the early 60's and I have been compiling a list of all the songs we played in those days. This song was one of them and one I've never heard before. At the time I worked out the chords and music from our singer's description of the song (He'd heard it you see) and it's quite amazing to hear it 47 years later for the first time and realise just how close to Bo's song our version was. What memories it has kindled.
I remember trying to learn some Bo Diddley songs on the guitar as a kid...this was my favorite....the melody is much different from his other stuff with a super catchy chord progression
Great song, I still have this on a 45rpm e.p on vinyl from 1963, the year I discovered Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry thanks to the Rolling Stones cover versions. Pills is a rarely heard gem and was never played on the radio but the jive-ass lyrics, clarity of the voice, the humour and the thundering (square guitar) all come together nicely and make it a classic, for me anyway.
Wow! A great Bo Diddley original. I first heard this on a Pye International EP issued in UK in 1963. I still have the EP, a prized possession, it but it's not easy to get this on CD, unless they've done it recently? I have never heard the New York Dolls version, I'll take a listen. Yes, I agree Bo was way ahead of his time but then again, he was one of the true pioneers of rock and roll who inspired so many to take up the guitar and simply have a go e.g. the Stones. R.I.P Bo Diddley.
Papa Bo you´ll always be a legend along with Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Dale Hawkins.....
