nice videos man. Do you ever use the other options in CAT like the layers and the weighting of layers? Would you say your workflow most of the time is just creating one layer and hammering away with it, animating only on top of that layer? cheers,
@PikminInvader that's the price of animation. Take Avatar, for instance: the extended version featured 9 extra minutes, each minute costing $1 million.
Hi dude, i have a question. Ive been using CAT to animate in 3DS Max that im now trying to export into the source engine, however, CAT bones are not the same as classic bones and the SMD exporter that Jed wrote doesnt support them. For this reason it is impossible to get a CAT animation into an SMD without first exporting using a plugin that works with CAT (FBX plugin works with CAT). SO my workflow at the moment: Export baked animation using FBX, import FBX, export SMD.U got a different method?
I just want to ask two things if you have the time to answer...
1. In max 2011, whenever I hit the play button, max 2011 seems to hang. max 2009 doesn't have that problem. Do I need to change some settings somewhere to get max 2011 fixed? I posted this question in about a dozen forums and no one answered well.
2. What is the screen recorder program you used in these tutorials? I use hypercam but yours seem much better.
Hey i messed up something. You know the X Y axis that you use to drag objects and scale etc. I somehow made it so da tiny that i cant change anything. I dont know what i did wrong :/. Do you know how to fix it?
Thanks so much for putting these twelve tutorials together, especially the animation ones! Do you think sometime you could leave a desktop webcasting application open while you animate?
@joeybuddy96 Yeah I might experiment with that sort of thing some time, atm I'm finding it hard enough just to cram in all the projects I need to work on, and I forgot to take time to work on stuff like that, and tutorials.
Did you custom make your computer or buy it pre made? Cause I'm saving up for a new computer and looking for a good one. It would be nice if you sent me a link of your computer or of it's parts.
hey i've been trying to get better at my arm animation and I've been looking at reference and stuff to try and understand it better. In a jump like this commonly a person will antic with their arms back, then swing them up as they're jumping to carry their momentum up. Then as they are falling their arm will pull back (I think to anticipate their reaction when you hit the ground?) and then swing forward when landing
@chicophi220 Sounds about right, try that and see how it look. There's no set rules for this stuff remember, don't get into that 'this is how you draw an eye' trap. There are general guidelines to body mechanics, but every one of us moves very differently. By all means use a lot of reference, it can be super useful, just don't do the same thing every time :D
@thejazzman9475 yes you're right, you don't want to get stuck in a "formula" and have everything look the same with no unique personality. Arms for me have been a bit of a mystery. I've been trying to understand their physicality more so that I'm not having to experiment with stuff all the time, but have a more clear idea of what works. Something I've noticed, but not sure if it's always true is that the arm seems to anticipate a "drop" and positions itself in a place where it can swing through.
@chicophi220 yeah certainly, and the thing with something like that on the arms is, you want to have high contrast in your motion generally (I think), so having them anticipate in the opposite direction of the swing just before hitting the ground will push the contrast more.
Hey Jazz man, It looks amazing, but I think maybe after the squash(?) one of the pyro's chest canister things is a bit weird... just thought I'd point it out. Otherwise it's bloody brilliant!
@please1spare1me I'm trying to remember if I actually animated the canisters in this tutorial, I think I didn't hehe, oh well :p you guys can go make a better finished one
Nice tutorials :D Only the pyro is a girl and you should call her "her" instead of "him" Not that it matters too much but just the little details that makes it full just like you said it your tutorials ^^
@HellHunterCombine Wow your an ass. You don't even know me and your are calling me a moron. Says more about you than me....anyways they wouldn't do that without a reason.
here is a bit of advise......it looks like his feet are glued to the floor if you watch the landing video. i dunno if its just me but yeah :| in other cases the animation is awsome! :D
If anyone wants some tutorials on game making (not animation the actual creation of the game) I could consider doing a tutorial on that. Also the tutorials are great, hopefully I can become good one day...
Edit: What program are you using to record your screen?

I think you should post a timelapse of you doing a professional finalized product so when you finish you can post both the finished product as well as the animation process.
This is so great! A while back I asked what you what you did to make your animations so fluid and natural looking, and I could have sworn that you used MoCap to do it. Even when you told me that you just went through frame by frame to make it look good I didn't quite believe you. But now I totally believe you! And when I get better at animation I'll know how to have an efficient work flow that has good results. Can't wait to learn more!
Seriously, Valve needs to hire you.

Hey @thejazzman9475 i made an animation as well, but its in blender.

for people who use blender, to do the auto-keyframing, press the button with the red dot near the timeline :D
and @2PacsFatherFOOTBALL , well its possible to learn it but it doesnt go quickly. this model is made by professionals at valve, so it isnt easy xD
