These computers each probably have more than 64GB RAM each, and 12 core not 8 core. The Bulldozer chips are consumer based, for gaming and so on as well as the GTX 580. These use Dual Intel Xeon 6 core processors and with hyper threading that's 34 cores per computer. They also probably have nVidia QUADRO workstation graphics cards, which are better for scientific graphics formulating.

These computers only had dual 2 ghz PowerPC G5 witch at the time were faster than dual 3 ghz xeon systems. plus there maximum ram was 8gb, they had a 10 teraflops speed. Now theyre using dual 2.5ghz g5 xserves and they also have a 8gb ram limit and they run at 12.25 teraflops.

@timoisdabomb You will need cluster software. You can find open OpenSource based software, witch is great. As for the performance, yes you will better bandwidth, but there is limitations in the hardware and you are most likely not to notice any effect.

That computer only cost me $700 at the time.

This makes me relise how slow apple stuff actually is. GTX 280 in quad SLI have around 7TFlops. Then a quad core amd phenom can have around 8.5GFlops. That gives me over 7TFlops on my custom build pc. The second coputer in my house is a lot slower and Benchmarks give it only around 3.5T Flops. Join these 2 togethere and you have over 10TFlops for less than 3000 dollars. What a waste of money apple.

At the time there was not a lot of choice in systems running duel 64bit server chips with the level of memory throughput these had.
