American TG-16 user here. Our consoles required an extra accessory called a "Turbo Booster" for a/v composite output. It was a large piece that connected on the back of the console. How/where do you connect your a/v cables?
@Caztro72 Yeah I looked this up before you asked the Question, the really interesting thing is that the US TG16 and the Japanese PCE had RF output only without the use of the Turbo/AV Booster, however the UK (PAL) TG is only in AV. There's a 5 pin DIN on the side of the console where the RF out would be on the US TG16 and Japanese PCE. It is supplied with a separate RF Modulator if you need it, but since I've used AV I've never looked back.
@ianwagj I believe it's because most of these sellers don't realise what they have. they either think it's a bog standard Turbografx or some obscure console noone cares about.
@LarryBundyJr thing is, I think the guy who sold it to me knew what he was selling. But for £45 brand new, I mean it's not cheap-cheap, heck you got yours for £15, but mine was brand new, or was yours brand new too? Still I've seen some crazy American ebay auctions where the dollars keep going up and up even when it's a used machine.
@ianwagj Yeah, some guy had a box full of them, where I got mine for £15. but that was total luck, I've also bought a brand new Hyper Neo Geo 64 for £20 from a bulk seller on eBay last year.
£45 is still a great price though, I've seen UK models go for £75 used before, but those sellers know what they have.
@ianwagj That's a nice price for a shrink wrapped game! If you ever buy the CD add-on games are region free, hell they're copy free too, you can just burn ROMS off the web to CD and they'll work.
You should get JJ and Jeff, that's not too bad and really cheap, but you got to get the Bonk games, they're the Mario/Sonic of Turbografx. (though Bonk III is pretty pricey)
I remember the name mentioned in Japanese MSX and gaming magazines, but never seen one before. Also played some games on emulators as well. Will have to look at what games are available, especially if it has an R-Type. Thanks for the review.
@electricadventures You're in good luck then, the TurboGrafx/PC-Engine has an almost perfect arcade port of R-Type. Be careful though, it's expensive, because the western version of the game had 3 ROMs on one card (making it expensive on release), whilst the Japanese version was on 2 cards. Get it on Virtual Console if you don't want to spend anything up to $100 on it, lol.
@ianwagj Thanks, I'll give the Virtual Console version a try 1st to make sure I like it and then work out whether to get the real thing. Good games are worth it though!
i got the exactly same thing mate! same outer box too. from ninjacastle right? its from ebay for £44.95. brand spanking new! and i also got 6 games for 25 quid from another place on ebay, time to get the turbotap aswell. happy gaming mate :)
@jeremykyleftw Yes indeedy I did. I'm surprised that someone managed to get so many brand new TurboGrafx consoles. And how on earth did you get 6 games for £25? Most of what I see are games I don't want like Vigilante and China Warrior. I'm hunting down Devil's Crush, and it's going to cost me, lol.
@ianwagj well there was a guy called simplesimon1966 which has a ebay retro gaming shop and he was doing a deal for 6 games for 24.95 or something. unfortunately china warrior did come with it, but i got some ok games. JJ and Jeff is actually quite amusing and good to play, and cratermaze is good aswell, and victory run is not bad. they ran out of vigilante and i got galaga 90 instead.
checked out ebay and hes sold out of the deal unfortunately.
@marthmarthmarth Yeah, I'm well chuffed to open it up! I feel sorry for the bloody thing not been opened out of it's box for over 2 decades! This is, if you go on eBay, you can find them still new, and not expensive either.
@TheGameGavel Yup, it's brand new, and hasn't been taken out of it's box. All the cellophane wrapping and bags were there. I was amazed when I plugged it in to see how crisp it is, even on composite video, my two Mega Drives are showing their age and getting blurry and glitchy.

I've got two of them, they're uber rare PAL machines.
Apparently there's less than 5000 in existence.

@LarryBundyJr Then... How come I got it so cheap? Or is it that obscure to the British then? lol.

Did you get Pac Land for free, or did you buy it separately?
LarryBundyJr 7 months ago
@LarryBundyJr PacLand was £12 and Galaga '90 was £7, I'll be getting a complete copy of Dragon Spirit for £12.
