Great song, AWESOME artist... But i cant help but think of how the title of the song so perfectly fits him now. Not trying to be funny but its just so shocking...
A great artist, who would've rose to a general legendary status.
@Finnhawc I'm pretty positive Jaco never taught at Peabody and though he may have met Michael Hedges, he never taught him. Jaco did teach at the the University of Miami, though. Manring studied under Jaco around around the time he attended Berklee, but in saying that, Jaco was never an actual instructor at Berklee.
What an absolute weird interpretation of a great Jimi Hendrix tune! I give Hedges props for even trying this one as I've rarely seen anyone attempt to cover it given how it's impossible to even come close to match the point of the song as created by Hendrix.
Chorus or flange? A chorus is a double flange, so sometimes it`s hard to tell. My old Boss chorus pedal will do either, so you can get a blended hybrid sound. Here I`d guess it`s a chorus.
I think Hedges was being disingenuous. He used effects, for sure, but in a subtle way to sculpt the sound rather than making them a feature of the songs themselves.
'Spare Change' is a studio composition through and through, constructed via tape loops, reverse, etc.
I've noticed the Chorus effect on my Flextone amp at times sounds like Flange... just without the cycling unless I tweak it that way.... doesn't sound like Flange to me here. But who knows?
lol yeah, that's weird!!! He is going against his interviews LOL, where he says "chorus is about all I use, every thing else and I'm being a wuss" or something
oh, well spare change is not a solo guitar tune... it's a set of material that he didn't include on the tune Aerial Boundaries that he messed around with and manipulated with tape reversing etc.
Andrew, Spare Change was a solo guitar tune for some time, then he recorded it live with Manring and Liz Story for a Windham Hill album in 82. The whole tune was composed. For the AB record, he wrote the original melody backwards on paper, learned to play it that way, and then reversed the tape. Amazing :D

@himvpdmr Michael Hedges studied under Jaco at Peabody, I believe. Michael Manring also studied with the greatest bass player, ever!

That's not what Michael Manring told me at a bass workshop but, I could have misunderstood him. Either way cool info, graff302420

@Finnhawc hmmm, yeah, I guess I could be wrong. Too bad Hedges isn't around to clarify...

He's using a TC Electronic 1210 Spatial Expander Stereo Chorus/Flanger in pitch modulation mode.

He probably did it to mimic the Hendrix sound. None of his compositions use it, although I'm still not sure how he pulls off Spare Change.

I'm gonna learn how to play it backwards, & perform it with loops. I have it half worked out in my head already! ;-)
