My brother is a 1st LT in the Army. He went to UC Berkeley, got his 4 year degree and then volunteered to join the army as an officer. He then lead combined squads of up to fifty soldiers into battle himself. He has the scars from grenades and two bullets to prove it. What has John Kerry proven? I graduated high school with a 3.5, did a year in college, but always felt that I belonged serving in the military, so I'm leaving for Army basic training in February. This moron is belittling our nation's troops who fight for everyone back home? Vietnam was 40+ years ago. We're not all lowlifes.

If a soldier believes that the cause is just then that's fine but sadly (in the UK at least), a lot of soldiers don't even care about why they're there. They're told to point and shoot so they do... Ignorant and stupid
When asked, most soldiers seem to reply with 'I just follow orders' or something like that. If you have a shitty mundane job and you just follow orders then that's fine, at least people don't die because of it. But in a war death is a reality, and I would want to know that I'm killing other people for the right reasons! Not to mention risking my own life.
I don't think military people are unintelligent, I have a few friends in the British services doing jobs like engineering. I don't think infantry soldiers are unintelligent either though.
I do think some are ignorant though, with so much mystery about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan how can any soldier be sure that they are there for the right reasons ?
Military members in general are more educated than the general populace. In fact many join the military to pay for their education. I have a degree in computer science and engineering from UCLA, one of the best schools in the US, and I'm also working on a physics degree. I'm not saying there are no soldiers with low IQs, because there are, but then again there are even more in the general population, so it's a moot point. I'm pretty sure my IQ is higher than Kerry's anyways.

In essence the military is simply an arm of the current political head. The military likes to portray itself as a noble organization that is for the people, which would only be marginally less asinine than it already is if they had stated that they were in fact a peacekeeping force. Never has the military furthered progress in the world. Dirty work is delegated to them regardless of the blatant malfeasance back at home, they follow without questioning, simply men of their time.

I'm in the Army and was given the task to learn French in only 4 months for 7 hours a day. And guess what, I passed my exam. "which is a 1 hour phone conversation with someone Ive never talked to before" And now I'm bilingual. And I had an easy language most of the guys have to learn Arabic, Pushtu, Dari, Russian, or Chinese.

American soldiers as a whole are more educated than the general population. I for one graduated top of my class in high school (4.6 GPA) and have a degree in computer science and engineering and am pursuing another in applied physics (currently 4.0). I'm also an E4 in the US Army. Granted if I didn't succeed academically I would probably have run for senator and been just another leech on the American people's money like Kerry.
Most of the people in army are uneducated and/or poor. Though the poor people might not have a chance for a decent education and the army might be the only way out..
@p4ul1z Actually, you're wrong. The enlisted corps of the military is predominantly from the middle class, and are, on average, more educated than the general public. The officer corps is almost entirely middle-and-upper class, and commissioned officers are typically required to have bachelor's degrees.

If you do well in school/ sports you get scholarships which help pay for school. if you have the smarts but not the grades for school, miltary service is your best choice. Anyone insulting the intelligence of military members is welcome to attend the same school I did:
Naval Nuclear Power School (look it up on Wikipedia)
45 hours a week of class, 15-45 hours additional mandatory studying, all of which is done in the classroom as the materials are classified and can't leave the building.
But sure, earning 80 college credit hours of nuclear engineering in under 18 months is what us halfwits in the military are relegated to, right? Go fuck yourselves, leftists

Now, that's still not a very good joke, but it's just a bad joke, it's not an offensive one. He mis-read his speech.

He was sent home in 4 mos. and immediately pursued a political career following the example set by the Kennedy's, he labeled all soldiers war criminals and stated that he had witnessed war crimes. His statement caused US POW's to be beaten and brutalized worse some died in captivity due to the brutality, his statement changed their status according to the VC

American soldiers as a whole are more educated than the general population. I for one graduated top of my class in high school (4.6 GPA) and have a degree in computer science and engineering and am pursuing another in applied physics (currently 4.0). I'm also an E4 in the US Army. Granted if I didn't succeed academically I would probably have run for senator and been just another leech on the American people's money like Kerry.

@p4ul1z Actually, you're wrong. The enlisted corps of the military is predominantly from the middle class, and are, on average, more educated than the general public. The officer corps is almost entirely middle-and-upper class, and commissioned officers are typically required to have bachelor's degrees.

Jan, you may be 21 as your page says, but you are still a child. In our home, my wife and I always made it clear that nonsense and gibberish were not acceptable. Our three sons have all grown to be mature, level headed men.
Our eldest is 25 and is in a Navy helo squadron. Lockheed has shown interest in his joining them when he rotates out. He'll make excellent money, but that's not why he joined.

Im from Mass and even when Kerry was running I didn't vote for him or Bush. That is why you need to think before you speak. Still I can't believe he said something like that. These men and women deserve respect. In fact more people need to take 5 minutes to offer ways to help soldiers and there families instead of watching some bullshit reality tv show

i don't get it. i thought theres an offer that if you serve you get to go to the best college in your district.
wouldn't that mean that these people didn't do well enough at school to actually get into these colleges? its just a job thats always open with little prerequisites.
i like the idea about risking your life is smart though. i guess you can appreciate how damn smart the Nazis were considering their percentages of the population that joined up. Or the Russians for that matter.

This from an idiot who spent appr. 3 months in Vietnam, was a danger to his fellow soldiers(2 purple hearts in that short time) and who's picture is posted right next to Jane Fonda's in the People's Victory Museum in Hanoi crediting him with HELPING the communist North to be victorious over the South. I didn't mean it in that context. When I asked 'who sent your husband overseas?' I wasn't referring Democrats or Republicans. I was referring to the fact that the people who send American men and women in harms way regard them to be ''dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy''(KISSINGER). We may not hold that view but the men that are responsible for sending them in harms way do.
