@MrPjotrus That's probably the best description of a berserker; oblivious to personal safety and wounds, fighting literally to the death. Thought to be, perhaps, a form of epilepsy or being aggressively "high" on certain (undisclosed) herbal or fungal substances!
Or do you mean the re-enactor? As a member of the same local group of "The Vikings", on balance, I agree. :-)
The term "berserk" is said to mean "bare shirt", ie no protection, and the sight of a frenzied warrior running at you, who won't stop fighting - with or without weapons - until dead or totally disabled, is supposed to have put the fear of Odin into many a Dark Age warrior.
Admittedly, in this case, the weapons and shield were tossed aside as a safety measure; Bunny can do plenty of damage without them!
I was always pretty sure it ment bearskin as Ulfhednar ment wolfskin.
Yes its an scary idea to see an "pack" of Berserkers charging at you. I gues they usually fought with the weapons the other Vikings/Germanics would be using as well.
What kind of damage? Biting someones troat out? ;P
Ber- (bear) vs berr (bare): you pays your money.... ! Take a look at the Wikipedia entry for "Berserk".
In terms of weaponry, I can see a berserker using two weapons, discarding a shield as an encumbrance. Any weapons he carried, though, would be lost, as a berseker was a "single-use weapon" for obvious reasons!
Hi all, Im the guy in the video. The term berserker means bear shirt, it reefers to those of the cult of Odin who were religious extremists, truly believing that to pass to the halls of Valhalla or Valhol they were to die in battle, they would spend hours in meditation and dance praying to the God's preparing for the moment in battle when they would become one with their Gods through the violence of death in their name.
I have been doing dark age reenactment for some years now and I find it alot easier to discard my weapons as they tend to snag people when Im going through the shield wall, this is a semi contact sport and we try to avoid injuries where ever possible. Berserkers at the time would obviously not have done this, they used any weapon to kill, maim or wound anyone they could get their hands on.
And yes it did hurt when I split a wooden shield with my knee, as "cheesy" ;) as this looks these folks are indeed trying to stop me from getting through, punching, elbowing and butting me to the ground, sorry to Chelf for the shield haha, don't stand in my way bro ;D
@BunnyTheBerserk Another theory about berserkers is that (along with drugs and alcohol, of course), their blind rage was caused by an extreme form of post-traumatic stress disorder (or something similar) which caused the conscious mind to simply withdraw and allow the body to run on reflexes and muscle memory. A similar phenomenon has been observed by modern military psychologists, where soldiers will see something terrible, completely mentally withdraw, and keep shooting at anything that moves.
Dude, don't bring your fists to a sword fight.
