  • 2 people need to be smacked with a recorder

  • Granddiosso !!!!!!!!!

(minuto 4:26)

  • What a great thing to hear on New Year's Day to bring in the new year.. This is Fantastic!

  • Surely the most amazing recording this incredibly difficult piece. Reinhold Friedrich is more than a modern Maurice Andre. His mastery is far beyond anything we have heard being played on the trumpet so far.

  • Does the recorder in this group have a key for playing low E? It looks as though it does...

  • ABsolutely wonderful!!!!

  • Amazing performance

  • Reinhold Friedrich and Giuliano Carmignola are excelents.

  • briliant

  • amazing preformane, Reinhold Friedrich is a legend. the way he plays it, so musical, so free and so natural with his beuatiful sound on the piccolo trumpet, and the high F in the end, as a trumpeter I can only say one big bravo, and of course great abbado. just perfect, it is the best preformence ever.

  • Much as I do not disagree withe the comments on the playing of the piccolo trumpet.. we have the finest recorder virtuoso in recorded history. So what a mix.

  • el sonido mas natural de los vientos

  • can't go wrong with Bach thx for sharing

  • spectacular

  • reminds me of scottish bagpipers I chatted with in sydney. I think those pipes are even more demanding on respiration system.

  • is Reinhold Friedrich using a herald trumpet?

  • Play a Bach fugue on the piano--there is very little overlapping of voices. Well, now and then maybe. When unavoidable. But by and large bass, tenor, alto, soprano--they all stay in their range. But the Brandenburgs--hey! the rules change!. Voices cross, intermingle, weave in and out--wonderful! wonderful!

  • @FlyHigh1987 I can testify to the fact that, for the most part, the voices in a "typical" Bach piece do not overlap. Although, contributing to this is that there is often not all four voices, often only two or three.

  • How wonderful to hear Bach played with so much love and passion. An absolute joy. Brought me to tears...

  • It seems to me like Michala Petri will always sound amazing even if she gets to live to 110. It is a joy to listen to her, always!

  • Those two who disliked this are deaf amoebae.

  • Thanks altsys13 - you are right. I asked Eric Aubier, the well-known French trumpeter, and he confirmed too on C trumpet - apparently a prototype or special Reinhold had someone build for him. As you say, most fluid and perfect phrasing when playing this terribly difficult piece made to look so easy. It must however be easier to play in the key of F than in G on the B flat piccolo. I like the look of his "long form" trumpet too. Most elegant !

  • Can anyone tell me what key his trumpet is pitched in. I think it may be an F or a G piccolo trumpet. Thanks

  • @hldstnom

From the looks of things he is playing in the key of "F" by his fingerings, so it's a "C" piccolo. Amazing playing.

  • too slow

  • Dr. Derek Shepard from Seattle Grace plays oboe??

  • best version I ever heard - light as a feather

  • So true, man look at that soloist line up.

The trumpet player stole the show though!! AMAZING!!

  • I love how, ending the encore, Reinhold cannot resist the trumpeter's natural urge to be the center of attention, and ends on the high tonic! I'm a fellow player of that instrument (albeit miles behind), so he's a man after my own heart... Yet he's so classy, staunchly in service to Bach's music; and I could not respect any trumpet player more.

  • @SoaringTrumpet genius comment! I'm also trumpet player and always want to end on the high tonic :DD

  • @SchwarzeDose21 Looks like it's a trumpet thing, I know a few players who have the same condition ;) hehehe

  • Bravissimo, Maestro Abbado!

  • Its Claudio! :D

  • Wow, killer rendition of this tune... btw, is it just me, or is that guy is barely conducting LOL...

  • @guitarcontrol He's conducting, all right. It's just that, for this piece, he doesn't need to move his hands very much.

  • What kind of recorder is she playing? its awesome!

  • @MsJune999 I think there is a recorder which plays treble clef (higher) and one that plays bass clef (lower notes). The most common is the higher one. And seems from this recording, she is playing the higher one.

  • @MsJune999 It's a sopranino in F, one octave above the treble/alto.

  • bach is the absolute master of counterpoint.

  • One of the best interpretation with the best players. I'm sure that Manel Glaysi will enjoy whit this moment

  • Lovely performance. I think it sounds better on treble than sopranino, yes.

  • What a cool block flute. What, range to low ," What" ? D ? The first block flute.

  • this is insane!! I cannot believe 53 thousand people watched this before me. Absolutely incredible!

  • the best of the best. simply.

  • that trumpet part would take a ton of breath control

  • A sensational rendition . . . thank you so much!

  • this one shows the recorder, but it's too fast!!

  • I want to know who were the 2 people who didn't like this?

  • yeah most hardly part for trumper!!!!!!

  • Great performance. Trumpet playing is great, but Michala is amazing on the recorder. She is playing a modern alto of somekind though, with keys. Does anyone know anything about the recorder she plays?

  • @PrisonersDelimma

Check Mollenhauer recorder range. They sell modern alto with a b foot, looks a bit like it.

  • The piccoloe tickles me pink in the pickles barrel.

  • The oboe makes my boes boes all better, from my head to my toes toes.

  • How does one conceive of so many varied moving sounds in concert? Truly a remarkable piece & performance

  • That last note just blew my mind

  • yes he´s playing on the baroque version of the selmer c piccolo.

  • Look at the fingerings Reinhold is using. So he's playing that on a C piccolo trumpet?

  • The most welldone Brandenberg cocnerto no 2 I have heard. Perfect timing.

  • What extraordinary piccolo trumpet playing. No brute strength here: all sensitive and beautiful musical expressiveness. And an even more amazing encore!!

  • @eddietrumpet59 non si chiama "piccolo recorder"

  • @alexander93959

I don't understand your comment. The trumpet in use is a piccolo trumpet in C.

  • @eddietrumpet1 tank you! :-)

  • @eddietrumpet1 credevo fosse un' "ottavino"

  • @alexander93959 Sopranino in F

  • This looks to be the best Brandenburg concerto on web...this part surely! Very beautiful! (on living is concert maybe little different, cameras also makes some effects). Very beautiful! Whole! Perfect!

  • This concerto is Mona Lisa! Perfect oil painting!

  • When someone would be interested in opinions of all especially negative people there would go people to psychiatry... Art is highly positive sphere and so it is perfect as it is! Also Mona Lisa and famous pictures has mistakes! They are interesting!

  • I hate negative comments on art which is so positive...also on my art... I do not know to paint being better than Holland masters.

  • I only think that sounder little pressed lower sound plus through microphone of alto or sopranino as is not enough heard and I as recorder was angry on this, because I wish to listen recorder, sounder problem. Balance between oboe and recoder...so I deleted comments therefore... I do not like no evil comments as I never listen anyone as art is art. I alone do not listen people and their negativism and so this is perfect on this side! With negativism nobody ever progress, but stopped to play...

  • When I downloaded sheet from internet there was sopranino in original, so I had to play oboe and I thought is is little strange, but it is nice! In original is sopranino and I could not play it by sopran recorder...

  • Wasn't it Thurston Dart who first revived the idea that the "flauto" part in the Brandenburgs was intended to be palyed on sopranino?

  • too fast

  • Oh dear... I can't look at the oboist's neck...

  • good performance but didn't need a conductor!!!

  • why not ?

  • I agree, but I'm not sure the choice of conductor makes up for that very fact! :P

  • I wanted only tell that it is nice concert, good harmony among instruments and especially oboe has very nice sound and sounder and rythm...and I enjoy from all famous Navarros and similar variations of this surname comming from our same ancestors, I surely many times....

  • go h-an mhaith ar fad...

  • they will put flowers in the harpsichord !

¡bravo Lucas!

  • They need another encore where Petrie plays her garklein flötlein!

  • Ha ha, she pulled out her sopranino recorder for the encore! Bold move!

  • Extraordinaire !

  • a piece of heaven

    :D

  • I like the way how Reinhold Friedrich sticks out his tongue at the end of the encore performance. He is amazing.

Bravisimo maestros. Gracias por colocarla y compartirla!

  • Amazing,-The best I ever heard!

  • thats the best ive ever heard the trumpet part played.

    such musicality.

  • @Handyman120 it is actually used to be played by a clarion!! an old middle ages trumpet!! just a factoid!

  • In a mood so enthusiastic I think that this change is really funny and though gives a new caracter not ridiculous at all.

  • Great! Thank you.

  • WOW! A foretaste of Heaven...

  • Carmignola! yay!

  • The sustained applause says it all. It is not possible to hear Bach without recognizing genius.

  • Michala Petri is brilliant I simply LOVE the piccoloflute in the second excerpt!! Mr Bach himself would be proud!! Go the baroque era!!

  • absolutely love her very much. Watched her performance some years back and she was amazing.

P/S: the 2nd time she is playing the sopranino recorder, which is in the same key as the alto recorder (in F) (hence the fingering is the same). I think the piccolo trumpet is in C, if not mistaken. I love this song so much because i play both recorder(s) and (piccolo) trumpet(s).

  • BRAVO...BRAAAAAVO.

  • the recorder player looks like my math teacher, i like her :P. The encore is maybe better than the first one, with the piccolo recorder, it's just amazing !

this is certainly the best recording of this 2th brandenburg i've ever heard. That's an incredibly pure music.

The first movement is currently traveling throught the space, in the voyager shuttle, it was choosen as the first excerpt to represent the mankind to the extraterrestrial lifes, this music is the best thing ever made on earth

  • bravo reinhold!!:)

  • I think Reinold friedrich is one of the better player of piccolo trumpet! Probably this interpretation is better than maurice andrée ' s one!

  • agreed
