i first met him when i bought Abbados recording of this requiem, with ricciarelli, domingo.. and i felt in love with his voice. This is the first time i can SEE him singing so young, and its delightful.
I first came across Ghiaurov when I bought the Giulini recording in 1966 and he has been my favourite bass ever since. Others can sing lower or higher, others can sing louder but NOT ONE of them can produce the consistent richness and beauty of tone which Ghiaurov produces. How fortunate that he made so many recordings!
I think that Ghiaurov is the guy that makes any bass that has a piece of taste want to quit at one point, but can never put the blame on him cause the voice is so damn beautiful and deep in wisdom!
